Michael Alexander (Mick Sandy) MacLennan
80, Sydney
Michael A. (Mick Sandy) MacLennan, 80, of 90 Dryden Ave., Sydney, formerly of 311 Borden St., Sydney, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Benacadie, N.S., he was the son of the late Philip and Annabelle (MacAdam) MacLennan. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier. He was a former member of the C.B. Gaelic Society. He was employed at the Sydney Steel Corp. in Property and Maintenance for 35 years, retiring in 1983.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Norman MacEachern), Sydney, Leona Faulder, Worthing, England; two sons, Michael (Cheryl), Toronto and Philip (Marina), Beaver Cove; one sister, Elizabeth (Lizzie) (Mrs. Donald MacAdam), Toronto; eight grandchildren, Michael, Helen, Susan, E.P., Sarah, Shaun, Cailin and Douglas; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Gregor.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Helen MacKinnon; stepmother, Mary (Dunn) MacLennan; brother, Patrick and a son, Philip in infancy.
The late Mr. MacLennan will have visitation today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on the 2nd level. Funeral mass will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the New Dawn Guest Home Residence Fund.

William Henry Vincent
78, Hantsport
William Henry Vincent, 78, of Hantsport, Hants County, N.S., died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, N.S.
Born Jan. 12, 1921, in Birmingham, England, he was a son of the late Herbert and Mary Vincent.
He was the former director of finance with the Nova Scotia School Board; former accountant with the firm Allen Jost; former city clerk treasurer with the City of Sydney; he was very active in community affairs. He was treasurer of the Hantsport Elders; treasurer and active member of Dukes of Kent, treasurer and active member of N.S.G.R.E.A.; active choir member of St. James United Church, Hantsport and treasurer of Hantsport Pastoral Charge.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wilda Eleanor (Taylor) Vincent, Hantsport; daughter, Karen and husband, Leonard Leaman, Lower Sackville; sons, Ian Vincent and wife, Coleen, Hammonds Plains, N.S., Allan Vincent, Bridgewater, N.S. and Randy Mosher and wife, Patricia, Bishopville, N.S.; grandchildren, Sam Vincent, Christopher, Katrina and Allysha Leaman and Jesse Vincent.
He was predeceased by his former wife, Katherine Lois MacDonald.
Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving friends at their home, 9 Main St., Hantsport, Tuesday, Oct. 19 from 2-4 p.m. Private family burial service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Service of Celebration will be held Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m., St. James United Church, Hantsport with the Rev. John Patterson officiating. Reception to follow in the church vestry.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or any charity.
Arrangements entrusted to Lohnes-Beazley Funeral Home, 419 Albert St., Windsor, N.S.

Harry M. MacLean
Sydney River
Harry M. MacLean, well-known Sydney businessman of 23 Birchdale Dr., Sydney River, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Bridgetown, N.S., he was the son of the late Joseph and Lucy (Dodge) MacLean. He was co-owner / operator of MacLean Brothers Plumbing and Heating Ltd. Harry served with the R.C. Army during the Second World War as a lance corporal training officer.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Kolanko; five sons, Ronald (Claire), Sydney Forks, David (Marie) and Douglas (Pamela), both of Howie Centre, Joseph (Tammy), Sydney River and Michael (Christina), River Ryan; two sisters, Mrs. Jean Foley, Halifax and Alice (Don) Roberts, Cambridge Station, N.S.; one brother, Alexander D. (Eileen), Sydney; nine grandchildren, Jody, Cara, Krista, Leanne, Daniel, Angela, Andrew, Jeffrey and Sarah.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Don and Hector, two sisters, Betty Kent and Phyllis Sangster.
The late Mr. MacLean will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Fatima Church with the Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses, C.B. Palliative Care Society or the Canadian Red Cross.

Philip Frederick (Freddy) Syms
59, Reserve Mines
Philip Frederick (Freddy) Syms, 59, of 792 Neville St., Reserve Mines, passed away suddenly, Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Philip and Helen (Etienne) Syms.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. He was employed for a time at Sysco and National Sea. At the time of his untimely death, he was employed at Sonny’s Taxi.
Freddy is survived by his long time companion, Kathleen (Kaye) McNeil and her children, Angus McNeil, Wendell (Shelly) McNeil, Milton (Monica) McNeil, Glenda (Mike) Fournier, Karen (Rodney) Howarth, Chris (Larry) Boutilier, Bruce (Kelly) McNeil, Bradley McNeil and Priscilla McNeil; sisters, Bernadette (Mrs. William Currie), Rita (Mrs. John Fowler); brothers, Gerald (Evelyn) Syms, Joseph (Miriam) Syms, Sheldon (Charmaine) Syms, Elmer (Anne) Syms, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Freddy was predeceased by brothers, William (Billy) Syms and Philip (Pookie) Syms.
Visitation for the late Mr. Syms will be held Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Freddy was loved by all who knew him. We will miss you very much.

Leo Godfrey Burke
49, Sydney
Leo Godfrey Burke, 49, of 235 Alexandra St., Sydney, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Godfrey John and Alfreda Marie (Fougere) Burke.
He is survived by sisters, Leona (Mrs. Michael MacLean), Horne’s Road, Janet (Mrs. Rick Ryan), Sydney, Glenda (Mrs. Thomas Wainwright), Sydney and Elaine (Mrs. Scott Gabriel), Dartmouth; also by a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Predeceased by a brother, George and a sister, Jean.
The late Mr. Burke will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Friday in St. Theresa Church, Sydney. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

John Roderick Jerrett
59, Sydney Mines
John Roderick Jerrett, 59, of 19 Victoria Dr., Sydney Mines, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on Oct. 28, 1939, he was the son of the late William and Flora (MacQueen) Jerrett.
Johnny worked most of his life as a bricklayer. He was a member of the Bricklayer’s Union and the Sydney Mines Kinsmen Club. Music was a very big part of his life and he was a member of “The Belevedere’s” band for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara (Pardy) and his five children, John (Sandra), Florence (Ken) Reid and Michelle Blake, all of Kitchener, Ont., Darlene (John) Bowie, Enfield and Barbara (Eric), Sydney. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, John Joseph (J.J.), Rody, Rene, Courtney, Parker, Nicole, Kyle and Nathan and his brothers, Harry, Clarence, Billy, Joe, Scottie and Eddie Joe.
Johnny will be sadly missed by his entire family and many friends. Love and peace from all.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, Rev. GeraId Dunphy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Liver Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.

Delores MacEachern
69, Sydney
Delores MacEachern, 69, of 74 Brown St., Sydney, passed away on Wednesday, the 20th day of October, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at home in Point Aconi, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Helen “Ellen” (Quinn) Jessome.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney and the parish CWL. She was a faithful employee of St. Rita’s Hospital for over 35 years, retiring in 1996.
Delores did volunteer work with the Canadian Cancer Society and the CWL. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister and enjoyed her family home situated at Point Aconi. She volunteered freely of her time and energy to those in need and will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh MacEachern; son, Duncan H. MacEachern and wife Paula MacEachern and grandchildren Mary Suzanne and Robin Hugh, Sydney; sisters, Theresa Serwatuk, Sydney and Venita Power, Point Aconi; brothers, William (Bill) Jessome and wife Alice, Sydney Forks, Stanley Jessome and wife Cora, Point Aconi, Blair Jessome and wife Cecilia, Point Aconi; sisters-in-law, Etta Jessome, Point Aconi and Joan Jessome, Ontario and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her brothers, Francis Jessome and Louis Jessome, both of Point Aconi.
The late Mrs. MacEachern will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. D. MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Society.
