Lorna Lillian MacPherson
90, Dominion
Lorna Lillian MacPherson, 90, formerly of King’s Road, Dominion, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, where she had been a resident for the past five years.
She was the daughter of the late Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier of Port Morien and had resided in Dominion all of her married life. Prior to her marriage, she had worked in the Boston area for several years. She was a member of Chalmers United Church, Dominion.
She leaves to mourn sons, Ronald (wife Erna Sheppard), Malcolm; daughter, Lillian (Mrs. Robert MacIsaac), Julia (Mrs. Terrence Mosley); sister, Mary (Mrs. Havelock Blades); brothers, Gilbert and Sanford; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm (Malcie Brassy) in 1976, an infant son, Sanford, brothers, Robert, Carlyle and Elmer, sisters, Winnifred (Mrs. Edgar Denney), Ina (Mrs. Donald Holman) and Clara “Toddy” (Mrs. Ralph Martell).
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacPherson will be held today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Ocean Avenue Cemetery, Dominion.
Any memorials in Lorna’s memory may be made to the Diabetic Association or a charity of choice.
Walter (Snag) Merner
82, Sydney
Walter (Snag) Merner, 82, a lifelong resident of 1136 Victoria Rd., died at home Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999.
Born at Whitney Pier, he was the son of the late Dennis J. and Alice (Cuddihy) Merner.
Walter was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and worked at Sydney Steel Corp. for many years. He served overseas during the Second World War in the R.C. Army with the R.C. Artillery. Walter was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, Whitney Pier.
He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Gloster, Halifax and Mrs. Alice Chisholm, London, Ont.; one brother, Cyril, at home. Also survived by nephews, Dennis and Thomas Merner, both of Sydney, Dennis Chisholm, London, Ont.; nieces, Pat Draper, Dartmouth and Molly Maroun, Sydney; grandnieces and grandnephews in Sydney and London, Ont.
He was predeceased by brothers, John, Dennis, Martin, Leo, Tom and a sister, Molly.
The late Mr. Merner will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Friday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church.
Donations may be made to the C.B. Hospice / Palliative Care Society.
Joseph Robinson
26, Grand Anse
Joseph Robinson, 26, of Grand Anse, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
He was the son of Alice (Cook) Robinson and the late Gerald Robinson. He was electrician by trade and worked as a security guard at the Nautical School, Port Hawkesbury. He was musical and volunteered his talent as a guitar player on numerous occasions.
Besides his mother, he survived by three children, Tylisha, Damion and Tylor; companion, Priscilla Peddle; brothers, Neil, Seaview, John, Ontario; two sisters, Gordena, St. Peter’s and Frances, Port Hawkesbury. Also survived by several aunts, uncles and two nieces.
Visitation will be held at the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, today (Thursday) 2-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis Cameron officiating assisted by the Rev. Tony Ware. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Bernie James Rose
51, North Sydney
Bernard James Rose, 51, of Pleasant Street, North Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, after a brief illness at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of Cecilia (Woodfine) Rose, North Sydney and of the late Maurice Rose. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 8. He was employed as a welder most of his life.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his loving companion and friend, Barbara MacDonald, North Sydney; one daughter, Trini (Gary) Lively, Petawawa, Ont.; one son, Shawn (Sandra MacDonald), Guelph, Ont.; two sisters, Cecilia (Mrs. Brian McCrann), Ottawa and Anne (Mrs. David LeBlanc), Point Aconi; four brothers, Maurice (Pauline), Montreal, Thomas (Janie), North Sydney, William (Janie), Sydney Mines and Patrick, Sydney.
Bernie was predeceased by a sister in infancy, Ellen Jane.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday (today) in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Gerald John Tracey
75, New Aberdeen
Gerald John Tracey, 75, of 41-4th St., New Aberdeen, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Center.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Mary Tracey.
He was a devout member of St. John the Baptist Church. He was employed as a coal miner until his retirement. Gerald was very active in his community. He was a member of long standing with A.A. He was on the board of directors of the Glace Bay Food Bank. He was also a member of the Cape Breton Mental Health Association. One of Gerald’s achievements was helping set up Drug and Alcoholic Awareness with Devco.
He is survived by his loving wife, Blanche (Campbell) Tracey; sons, Wayne, Michael (Bonnie), Stanley (Lisa), all of Glace Bay, Reggie (Dolly), Kevin (Shirley), Stuart (Sandy), all of Kitchener, Ont.; daughters, Claudia, Nadine (Fred) Leyte, Dianne (Billy) Gillis, Ann (Sandy) Broman and beloved granddaughter Tanya (John) Sexton, all of Kitchener, Ont. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also survived by one sister Mildred (Clifford), Maidment, Ont.
He was predeceased by three sons and one daughter.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, Friday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m.

Oretha Florence Baker
62, Scotchtown
Oretha Florence Baker, 62, of 45 Queen St., Scotchtown, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Robert G. and Christina (Hunt) MacDonald. She was a member of Calvin United Church, a former employee of Consumer Distributing for a number of years where she made many good friends. She was an avid bingo player at the New Waterford Community Centre where the employees went out of their way to make sure she was taken care of.
Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband, William; two daughters, Chrissie (Terry), Halifax, Roberta (Allister), New Waterford; two sons, Charles (Tracy) and Arthur, both of New Waterford; one brother, Robert, Margaree; also surviving are three grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Brandon, Kyle and Crystal Dawn.
There will be no visitation. All are welcome to the funeral to be held Saturday 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church with the Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
She always had a smile and kind word for everyone.
Leo Joseph Johnson Sr.
70, Castle Bay
Leo Joseph Johnson Sr., 70, of 227 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at home.
Born at Chapel Island, he was the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Battiste) Johnson. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
He served as Keptin of the Grand Council and was organizer of the Eskasoni Church Council. He was the grounds supervisor during the St. Anne’s missions. He also served as a Ward 5 councillor for many years. He was one of the co-organizers for the St. Anne de Beaupre Pilgrimage. He was also a major fund raiser for various charities in Eskasoni. He worked in the construction and landscaping business in the Boston area for 22 years, returning to Eskasoni in 1967. He was first recipient of the Eskasoni Citizen of the year award. He was a fluent Gaelic speaker.
He is survived by his wife, the former Annie I. Poulette; daughter, Helen T. (Mrs. Charlie Dennis), Eskasoni; son, Leo J. Jr. (Annie), Rockland, Mass.; sisters, Sarah (Mrs. Cyrus Sark), Rocky Point, P.E.I., Gladys Johnson, Eskasoni, Mrs. Patricia Bernard, Indian Brook and Georgina (Mrs. Edward Julian), Eskasoni; brothers, Mattie (Annie), Chapel Island, Howard (Ethel), Eskasoni and Stanley (Marjorie), Eskasoni; five Godchildren, Diane Johnson, Frances (Puddy) Christmas, Lyle Julian, Evelyn Joe and Wade Gould; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by sisters, Florence, Anna, Theresa and Baby Charlene Evelyn, brothers, John T. and Roddie.
The late Mr. Johnson will have visitation at the family residence, 227 Shore Rd., Sunday, Oct. 24 after 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Family Church with Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni, under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
