73, Blues Mills, Inverness Co.
Edith Betts, 73, of Blues Mills, Inv. Co., died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Inverness Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Silver Mines, the daughter of the late Norman and Florence (Arey) MacDonald (Miller). She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Port Hawkesbury.
Surviving are her husband Tunney; daughters, Pauline (Mrs. Donnie MacLean), East Lake Ainslie, Elaine (Mrs. Martin Hall), Victoria, B.C., Irene Betts, Halifax, Lorraine (Mrs. Eddy MacDonald), Port Hawkesbury, Kathleen (Mrs. Allan MacMillan), Whycocomagh, Robin (Mrs. Stephen Beaton), Halifax; sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Calvin Stewart), Greenwood, Rhodena (Mrs. Gradus Smits), Prime Brook, Thelma (Mrs. John Pronk), Loch Lomond; brothers, Dan Alex, Sydney, Aubrey, County Line Road, Richmond Co., Murray, Toronto; grandchildren, Jennifer, April, Chrystal, Nadine, Karen, Kelly, Kimberley, Matthew, Mark, Nathan, Stephen, Andrew and Noah.
Predeceased by sister Sarah MacKeigan; brother Gordon.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 today (Monday) at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Church of Latter Day Saints, Tanglewood Dr., Sydney, presiding is president George Little. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or the Arthritis Society.

Russell G. Clements
47, New Waterford
Russell G. Clements, 47, of Lingan Road, New Waterford, died tragically as a result of a motor vehicle accident Friday, Oct. 22, 1999.
Visitation was held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Smith Street, New Waterford, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Mount Carmel Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

B.J. Gould
22, Castle Bay
B.J. Gould, 22 of Castle Bay Rd., passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 1999.
Born in Inverness, he was the son of Mildred J. Gould, Castle Bay and the late Wilfred Gould Sr. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni. He was enrolled in the Elintek Program at UCCB. B.J. was an avid hunter and loved the Cape Breton Highlands.
Surviving are his girlfriend Bobbi Jean Murphy; daughter Hannah Jean and son Ryan Joseph Gould, all of Big Pond; two God children Keith MacDonald, East Bay and Shawn Austin Gould, Whycocomagh; three sisters, Mary M. Gould, Eskasoni, Brenna Connie Dennis, Eskasoni and Elizabeth Rose Gould, Eskasoni; three brothers Wilfred J. Gould Jr. (Olivia), Whycocomagh, Kevin V. Bernard, Eskasoni and David Jr. Poulette, Eskasoni. B.J. is also survived by uncles Steve Paul, Allister (Gutch) Paul, Wilfred Paul, Basil Paul and Gollie Paul, all of Eskasoni, Peter, Shubenacadie, Joey, Afton, John, Ricky, both of Whycocomagh and Loli, Eskasoni; aunts Elizabeth Doucette and Bridget Herney, both of Eskasoni, Gloria MacDonald, East Bay and Joannie Lafford, Eskasoni; nieces Rayma, Ande, Julia, Jesse and nephews Kevin Jr. and Tristen, all of Eskasoni.
Besides his father he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Roddie and Margaret Marshall and paternal grandparents Andrew and Mary Gould; one cousin Rodney Googoo; aunt Barbara Jean Googoo and two uncles Bernie Gould and Leonard (Buggy) Marshall.
The late Mr. Gould will have visitation after 7 p.m. tonight (Monday, Oct. 25) at the family residence, 365 Castle Bay Rd., Castle Bay. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni with Fr. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Max Albert Hoffman
86, Glace Bay
Max A. Hoffman, 86, of 19 Grant Street, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex Friday, Oct. 22, 1999.
Born in Albert Bridge, Mira, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Weiss) Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman was a member of Glace Bay United Baptist Church and a former employee with the Dominion Coal Company and the Cape Breton Development Corp. working in No. 1-B and No. 26 collieries. Max served with the Royal Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War with the 32nd Battery in Holland, Belgium and Germany and arrived in Normandy on D-Day. He was a member of Branch 5, Royal Canadian Legion, Donkin.
Mr. Hoffman is survived by sons, Jimmie (Loretta), Joseph “Butch” (Jean), Ralph (Belinda) and Kenny, all of Glace Bay; daughters, Betty (Mike) Saccary, Glace Bay, Marilyn, (Bruce) Sarty, Lunebury; grandchildren, Cori (David MacLean), Glace Bay, Kelly (Dean) Landers, Fredericton, N.B., Jamie, Lori, Kyle, Chad, Ryan, Jill, Kenneth, Michelle, Kara, Danielle and Matthew and great grandchildren, Brianna Leigh, Mitchell and Brandon. Also surviving is one sister, Freda, Mrs. Otto Mestinsek, Alberta.
Mr. Hoffman is predeceased by his wife Catherine (Sis) Hoffman; brothers Martin and Arthur.
Visitation for the late Mr. Hoffman will be held (today) Monday from 2-4, 7-9 pm. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Glace Bay Baptist United Church, York Street, with Rev. Jennifer Smart officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations to Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton are suggested as memorials.

Mary Agnes MacDougall
New Waterford
Mary Agnes MacDougall, 4227 Ellsworth Avenue, New Waterford, passed away peacefully on Oct. 24, 1999, at the Q.E. II Infirmary, Halifax, after a long, courageous battle. Born in New Waterford in 1927, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary (LeBlanc) Reid. Mary was a great lover of life and lived it to its fullest. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
She was the loving mother of David (Marge Beveridge) Shaunavon, Sask., Mary (Ron Desveaux), Gail MacDougall (Pius Stephenson), Gil (Cathy Podgursky), all of New Waterford. Nana is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Annette and Lisa MacDougall, David, Douglas and Jonathan Desveaux, John Stephenson, Nicole and Danielle MacDougall. She is also survived by her sister, Pearl (Roy Bain), Ontario; and one step-sister Mary (Tom Hurley), New Waterford.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Charlie in 1985; sister Alice; brother, Charlie; her step-father, Bill Owens; one brother and one sister in infancy.
Mom was a unique person who will always be remembered – we will carry her memory in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the DePaul Centre, Mount St. Vincent University, 150 Bedford Highway, Halifax, N.S. B3N 3J5. “our home away from home for the last 5 months.”
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to V.J McGillivray, Funeral Home, Smith St., New Waterford. Visitation will be from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at St. Agnes Church in New Waterford on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, Father Robert Neville officiating.

Peter Rory MacKenzie
76, Port Hawkesbury
Peter Rory MacKenzie, 76, of 29 Prince St., Port Hawkesbury, passed away suddenly Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Saint Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Christmas Island, he was the son of the late John N. and Theresa (MacKinnon) MacKenzie. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Port Hawkesbury and St. Barra’s Parish, Christmas Island. He was employed for many years with Insulite Buildings, working in Newfoundland, Sydney, Dartmouth and Port Hawkesbury. He also worked at the Sydney Steel Plant. Until the time of his retirement in 1993 he was employed as Maintenance Supervisor at the Causeway Shopping Center, Port Hawkesbury.
He is survived by three daughters Valarie Ann, Fort MacMurray, Alta., Heather and Colleen, both of home; two sons, Peter and wife Janet, Truro and Daniel MacNeil, Fort MacMurray, Alta.; granddaughters, Erin and Lauren, Truro. Three sisters Margaret Smith, Montreal, Mary Ann Farrell, Banacadie, Edna Farrell, Boston; brother Aloysius MacKenzie, Beaver Cove.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Ann; sisters Catherine D’Hodge, Mary E. Gillis, Kathleen MacLellan and Sr. Mary Alexina; brothers Alex Joe, Dan Archie, Neil Joseph and Alphonsus Daniel.
The remains will rest at Green’s Funeral Home, 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, Port Hawkesbury with Rev. Bill Burke officiating, assisted by Rev. Hughie D. MacDonald. Burial will be in Christmas Island.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.F. Greene Funeral Services Ltd., 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury.

Alene MacLean
Baddeck
Alene MacLean of Tarbot, Victoria Co., died October 24, 1999, in Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Tarbot, she was a daughter of the late Allan and Rhodena (Matheson) MacLean. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in North River.
She is survived by sisters Rena (Mrs. Don Butts), Ontario, Bessie (Mrs. Robert Fowler), North Sydney; brother Roy, Baddeck.
She was predeceased by brother, Murdock; sisters, Evelyn, Belle, Margaret, Jean, Margaret Rhodena. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Shirley Murdock officiating with burial in Goose Cove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the Matheson Memorial Fund Arrangements entrusted to MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
