Annie Christine (Pope) MacLeod
89, Louisbourg
Annie Christine (Pope) MacLeod, 89, of 7575 Main St., Louisbourg, passed away suddenly Oct. 24, 1999, at home.
Born in Old Town, West Louisbourg, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (MacIntyre) Pope. She was a member of First United Church, Main St., Louisbourg and was secretary of the Senior Citizens Club. She worked on Seagull Publication and was active in the Home and School Association. She graduated from Normal Teachers College in 1929 in Truro and was employed in Louisbourg as a teacher and was principal of the elementary school until her retirement in 1970.
She is survived by son Barry (Wendy); grandchildren Kelly, Jason, Deanne MacLeod (Mark Forward), all of Halifax; one sister Kathleen, Louisbourg.
She was predeceased by her husband Donald John; infant son Lorne; sisters, Mary, Ellen and a brother Michael.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the First United Church, Main St., Louisbourg, Funeral services Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the First United Church with Rev. Clayton Austin officiating, under the direction of W.A. Chant’s Funeral Home. Interment in Willow Grove Cemetery, Louisbourg.
Donations to a charity of one’s choice or Willow Grove Cemetery Fund.

Joseph O'Connell
66, Sydney
Joseph O’Connell, 66, of Braemore Home, died suddenly Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at the home.
There will be no visitation.
Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Bernard O'Neil
88, North Sydney
The O’Neil family regret to announce the death of their father Bernard O’Neil, a very kind and gentle man, a resident of Purves St., North Sydney who passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999.
Born in Newfoundland, he was the son of the late James and Mary Margaret (Ricketts) O’Neil. He was a member of the UMWA and a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney. He was employed as a coalminer most of his life with the Florence Colliery and Princess Mine.
He is survived by three daughters, Beverley, at home, Ann (Mrs. Rene Patry), Bedford and Agnes, Dartmouth; son, Bernie (Ann), Dartmouth; three sisters, Mary, Alice and Rita all of St. Catharines, Ont.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife the former Agnes Delaney; two daughters, Mary Ratchford and Eileen; two sons, Eddie and Michael; five brothers, Ed, Peter, Bill, James and Joe; sister Bernetta and two grandchildren, Rene and Michelle.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to charity of one’s choice.

Mary Agnes MacDougall
New Waterford
Visitation will be from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. (today) Tuesday. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at St. Agnes Church in New Waterford at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, Fr. Robert Neville officiating.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to V.J. McGillivray, Funeral Home, Smith Street, New Waterford.

Merrill Crosson Bethune
64, Baddeck
Merrill Crosson Bethune, 64, of Baddeck, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Baddeck, he was a son of the late Norman and Dolly (MacIntosh) Bethune. He was a member of the Greenwood United Church. He was a surveyor, mechanic, contractor and most recently was employed by Parks Canada. He was an avid wooden boat and boating enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marie MacLeod; sons, Peter, New Glasgow, John, Toronto, Robert, Elmsdale; daughter, Belinda, Tarbot; brothers, Lem, Cape Cod, Mass.; Norman, Baddeck; grandchildren, Zachary and Justin, Enfield; Rachael, Stephanie and Sarah, New Glasgow.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 in Greenwood United Church, Rev. David Lutes, assisted by Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.

Ruby Brown
72, North Sydney
Ruby Brown, 72, a resident of King Street, North Sydney and formerly of Big Bras d’Or, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Cape Dauphin, Victoria County, she was a daughter of the late J.W. and Jennie MacLennan. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, and a former member of St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or.
She is survived by her husband, Leo; one son, John (Barbara) MacLennan, Pictou; two stepsons, Leo Joseph (Sharon) Brown, North Sydney, John Malcolm (Kathy) Brown, St. Catharines, Ont.; one stepdaughter, Shirley (Dave) Yetter, Harve Boucher; four sisters, Mrs. Catherine McCuaig, Sydney, Louise (Caroll) Lectz, Jennie MacLennan, both of Cape Dauphin, Pearl (Hubert) Colvey, Bras d’Or. Also survived by several grand and great-grandchildren and a special friend, Jacqueline Brown.
She was predeceased by one brother, Daniel.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Friday 10 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with the Rev. Peter Piva officiating. Cremation to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Marguerite (Betty) Gillis
84, Whitney Pier
Marguerite Elizabeth (Betty) Gillis, 84, of 40 Mercer St., Sydney, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Linus and Mary (Gillis) Clark. She was a devoted member of Holy Redeemer Parish, a member of the CWL, Club 55 and the Whitney Pier Senior Citizen’s Club.
She is survived by her loving children, six daughters, Anne Gillis, (with whom she resided), Florence Walker, Halifax, Jane Graham, Theresa (Allan) Jones, both of Coxheath, Mary (Tim) Casey, Cornwall, Ont. and Kathleen (John) Awad, Ottawa; three sons, Bernie and Jimmy, both of Sydney and Joe Gillis, Ottawa; one sister, Rita (Eddie) Keefe, Boston; one brother, Archie (Jennie) Clark, Sydney; 19 grandchildren, Alex, Diane and Laurie Gillis, Dawna Gillis-Prosper, Ann Gillis-Murphy, Betty and John Walker, Elizabeth and Leona Graham, Amie, Terri, Alison and Susan Jones, Jacques and Gaitanne LaVoie, Rosalie, Christian, Alana and Adam Awad and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her devoted and loving husband, James in 1967, a special granddaughter, Wanda Walker in 1997 and by three brothers, Johnnie, Leo and Charlie and three sisters, Kathleen, Cassie and Flo.
She is leaving all of her family a legacy of deep faith in God and in themselves. Her total belief and trust in God helped her and will continue to help all of us through the trials of life. She will be deeply missed and will remain in our hearts forever.
The late Mrs. Gillis will have visitation at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Redeemer Church. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In her memory donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or to a charity of choice.
