Christine Flora MacCuish
86, Sydney
Christine Flora MacCuish, 86, of Sydney, formerly of New Boston Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Born at Albert Bridge, she was a daughter of the late John D. and Kate Ann (MacVicar) MacCuish. She was a member of Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by one sister, Isabel Magee, Sydney; one brother, Phillip, Victoria, B.C.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Hector and Archie.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel Friday 12:30 p.m. with the pastor Jim Murchison officiating. Burial at Loch End Cemetery, Catalone.
Memorials may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of choice.
Ella Catherine (Kay) MacKenzie
84, Sydney
Ella Catherine (Kay) MacKenzie, 84, of Dutch Brook, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late James and Annabell (Johnson) Gordon. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Church and prior to her retirement worked as a sales clerk. Kay was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen (Tom) Moore, Brantford, Ont.; two sons, Grant (Pat), Coxheath and Ken, Edmonton, Alta.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman. Kay was also predeceased by her sister, Annie, three brothers, Ed, Alex and John and special friend, Norman MacLeod.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Friday, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Sharon Irving, Rev. Dale Irving and Rev. Fraser MacDonald officiating. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or the CNIB.
Peter Patrick Roach
82, New Waterford
Peter Patrick Roach, 82, of 3202 R. Plummer Ave., New Waterford, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Cheticamp March 5, 1917, he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary (McKinnon) Roach. Peter was a member of Mount Carmel Parish. He worked for the Dominion Coal Company and Devco from 1941 to 1984.
He is survived by his wife, the former Catherine Poirier; sons, Hector (Nancy) Roach, Fredericton, N.B., Clarence (Vivian) Roach, Dundas, Ont.; daughters, Marie (Archie) MacKinnon, New Waterford and Betty (Chester) Muise, Ottawa. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Billy, Sarah, Blair, Cynthia, Colleen, Todd, Robert, Janelle and Andrew; brothers, Alphonse, Arichat and Leo, New Waterford.
Peter was predeceased by one son, Patrick Roach, sisters, Mary Louise, Emma, Evelyn, Elizabeth, Annie, Sabine and Sarah and by brothers, Joseph, Hubert, John and Marcellin.
Visitation for the late Peter Roach will be held today (Thursday) in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Friday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Saint Michael’s Church Building Fund.
Jennie Wainwright
88, Sydney
Jennie Wainwright, 88, of The Cove Guest Home and formerly of St. Peter’s Road, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Nellie (Longton) Taylor. She was the last member of her immediate family.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Nick) Fourdraine, New Glasgow and Patricia (Patsy) MacNeil, Sydney; son, Robert, Ottawa; four grandchildren, Kim MacNeil, Shelley (Willie) Martin, Sydney, Cindy (Bruce) Bartlett, Leitches Creek and Wendy Fourdraine, New Glasgow; three great- grandchildren, Joshua and Kelsey Martin, Seth Bartlett.
Predeceased by her husband, Thomas (1968), two sisters, Alice Morrison and Doris Kinsella, brothers, Samuel and Arnold in infancy.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Friday 11 a.m. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer Society or charity of choice.
Theresa Basker
49, North Sydney
Theresa Basker, 49, a resident of Vale Street, North Sydney, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Colin and Annie Mae (Handley) Steele. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are her husband, Pat Basker; four daughters, Laura (Mrs. Michael Hennessey), Patricia (Mrs. Shameus MacDonald), both of North Sydney, Sheri Basker, Halifax and Michelle (Jamie), at home; three grandchildren, Mitchell, Blake and Kenzie; four brothers, a special brother Eddie, Little Pond, Ronnie, North Sydney, Sandy and Colin, both in Sydney Mines; five sisters, a special sister Carolyn (Mrs. Ernie Brown), Little Pond, Mae, Sydney Mines, Peggy (Mrs. Martin Evans), Sydney Mines, Kay (Mrs. John MacIntyre), Florence and Liz (Mrs. Levi Nippard), North Sydney.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Rebecca MacIntyre.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Friday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Funeral mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Lewis Campbell
67, Sydney Mines
Lewis Campbell, 67, of 25 Guy St., Sydney Mines, passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late John A. and Mary Ellen (Waye) Campbell. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Sydney Mines. Lewis was an avid bowler since 1950 and in that time he captured two top championships. He was also a Maritime bowling champion for over 20 years. He also played junior and senior baseball and coached little league for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Jimima (MacKinnon); two daughters, Mary Lou (Mrs. Gordie Moore), Sydney Mines and Judith (Mrs. Dave Clarke), North Sydney; two sons, Leo (Bonnie) and Paul (Laura), both in North Sydney. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Bungay, Sydney Mines and Janie Hagley, Ontario; one brother, Frank, Ontario.
Predeceased by brothers, Russell, John and Carson, one sister, Gladys Fobear.
Visitation will be held at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines today (Friday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines at 10 a.m. Saturday, with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
John Joseph MacLean
65, Sydney
John Joseph MacLean, 65, of 73 Oxford St., Sydney, died Thursday morning, Oct. 28, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born Dec. 14, 1933 in Sydney, he was the son of the late Daniel Joseph and Theresa (MacNeil) MacLean. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney.
He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Sears, Sydney and Mrs. Christine (Simon) MacGean, Ingonish; two brothers, Malcolm, with whom he resided and Michael (Shirley) MacLean, Sydney.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret and Mary.
The late Mr. MacLean will have no visitation as cremation has taken place.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, 9 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Daniel MacDonald officiating. Interment in the family plot, Holy Cross Cemetery.
