Lillian I. MacLean

Lillian Isabel MacLean, of Sydney River, passed away suddenly Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at home.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Duncan and Lillian (Phalen) MacDonald. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. She was a member of the Spanish River Senior Citizens Club and was very active in local modern square dancing. A nursing graduate of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, Lillian had just celebrated her 50th year graduation anniversary in 1998.
She is survived by one son, James W., at home; one brother, John Eddie, Edmonton; sister-in-law, Emily MacDonald, Port Hawkesbury and by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, James W. in 1979, a sister, Mary Rose Hewgill and two brothers, Robert and Alexander.
The late Mrs. MacLean will have visitation in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Fatima Church with the Rev. N. MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Murray James MacLeod
78, North Sydney
Murray James MacLeod, 78, a resident of 65 Campbell St., North Sydney, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late John Ronayne and Mary F. Evelyn (Cohoon) MacLeod.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the RCAF overseas in the United Kingdom and Normandy. He was employed as a journalist with Industrial Public Relations in Halifax, Montreal, New York, Honolulu and Long Beach, Calif. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus, a member of the North Sydney Historical Society, the Nova Scotia Historical Society, Seaview Golf and Country Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 19.
He is survived by his wife, Anne C. (Littlejohn) MacLeod; one brother, Hugh F. MacLeod, Bedford, N.S.; two sisters, Mary Jean Kelly, Sandwich, Mass., Miriam P. MacLeod, Halifax, N.S.
He was predeceased by a brother, J. Donald MacLeod.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with the Rev. Peter Piva officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.

Brian Lee McIntyre, 27, of 38 MacKinnon’s Lane, Dominion, passed away Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the QEII Hospital, Halifax.
Arrangements under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, 849-4505 are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.
Pearl Muggah
92, Glace Bay
Pearl Muggah, 92, longtime resident of 138 Main St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Glace Bay Seaview Manor, where she had resided since 1992.
She was a daughter of the late Absolam and Isabel (MacLean) Beaton. She was a member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann (Mrs. Lorne Butler), Halifax; three grandchildren, Rob, Toronto, Keith, St. John’s, Nfld., Kim, Halifax; sister, Abby (Beaton) MacLellan. Also survived by a devoted nephew, Bobby (Phyllis) MacPherson, Dominion and a nephew, Jimmy, Glace Bay; nieces, Betty (MacLellan) and husband, John Anderson, Joan Steeves, Florida, Margie (Beaton) Ferguson, Ottawa.
Predeceased by her husband, Harold, sister, Nan (Beaton) MacPherson and brothers, Jim, Ernie, Freeman and Clarence.
Remains will rest at Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, with visitation Sunday, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel Monday with the Rev. David MacLean officiating.
Burial will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Alice Annie Anderson
92, Sydney
Alice Annie Anderson, 92, 20 Tillock Drive, formerly of Richmond St., Sydney, passed away suddenly Friday, Oct. 29.
Born Oct. 27, 1907, in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Tobin) and Victor Adoux. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her son William, Sutton, Que., George (Dorothy), Slocan, B.C., Charles (Theresa), Needham, Mass., USA; son-in-law Barney, Calgary, Alta.; daughter-in-law Marina, Sydney. Nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive her.
She was predeceased by her husband Dan; daughter Tillie Walthuis, Calgary, Alta.; son Donald, Sydney and brother Jack, Montreal, Que.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial mass will be held Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church, Whitney Ave., Sydney, Nova Scotia, followed by burial in the family plot at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Dorothy C. (Icy) Brewster
70, Glace Bay
Dorothy C. (Icy) Brewster, 70, of 12 Jessome St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford and daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Francis) Francis. She was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Parish. Also a devout member of the United Negro Improvement Association. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survived by daughters, Winnifred (Mrs. Eveston Lucas), Sydney, Donna Ashe, Antigonish, Ruby Headley, Glace Bay, Debbie (Mrs. Yves Leplante), New Brunswick, Helen and Johnnie, Mary (Mrs. Joe Peters), Veronica, all of Glace Bay; sons, Benjamin and Richard, both of Glace Bay, Donald and Jacqueline, Floyd and Marlene, all of Glace Bay, Kevin and Jane, Ontario, Calvin and Terry, Halifax; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Joshua Brewster and one son, little Josh; two daughters Carol Ann and Lorraine; two brothers Edgar and Krim Francis.
There will be a memorial service Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Rev. Margaret Collins officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.

Christine Brewer
96, North Sydney
Christine Brewer, 96, of 32 King Street, North Sydney, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Sarah (MacNeil) MacIntosh. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, North Sydney. She was a school teacher in her early years, having taught in several rural schools throughout the Cape Breton area.
Surviving are her two daughters Olga with whom she resided and Colina “Queenie” (Mrs. James Dunn), North Sydney; son, Del, Baddeck; 25 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; many nieces and one nephew. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Colin A. Brewer in 1966; two daughters Grace and Cletus; two sons John Ariel Sr. and Ralston Gregory (Rally); brother John; two sisters Mary and Sarah and one grandson Jeremy who was accidentally killed in 1979.
Visitation will be Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, Nmrth Sydney with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial will follmw in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Building Improvement Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
