Albert (Tony) Briffett
Donkin
Mr. Albert (Tony) Briffett, 61, of 2165 Tupper, Montreal, passed away Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in the Montreal General Hospital. He has `een a resident of Montreal for the past 15 years.
Born in Donkin, he was the son of the late Edward and Isabella (Noseworthy) Briffett. Mr. Briffett was well known in the local area and a former employee with the Cape Breton Development Corp. He was a member of St. Gregory’s Church in Donkin.
He is survived by brothers Ronald (Margaret), Dieppe, N.B., Malcolm, Donkin and David, Verdun, Que.; sisters Marie Briffett, Montreal and Gladys (Mrs. Herbert Spurrel), Athleston, Que. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers Thomas Yetman, Joseph, Frederick, Frank and James and a sister Beatrice.
Visitation for the late Mr. Briffett will take place in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Tuesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Gregory’s Church, Donkin, with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Private burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Sister M. Joannes Chisholm
82, Antigonish
Sister M. Joannes Chisholm, a Sister of St. Martha, Antigonish, 82, of Bethany Motherhouse, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Bethany.
Born in St. Andrew’s, Antigonish Co., Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (MacGillivray) Chisholm.
Before entering the Sisters of St. Martha in 1945, she taught school for six years. After entrance and further teacher training at the Truro Normal College, Sister Joannes continued in the teaching field for 21 years. She taught in Eskasoni, Dominion and Alder Point, Nova Scotia. From 1965-85, she served in the Bethany Business Office. In 1992, Sister Joannes was admitted to Bethany Extended Care.
Sister Joannes is survived by two sisters, Sister Clarissa, CSM, Antigonish, and Mary K. Bailey, Fraser’s Grant, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia.
She is predeceased by one brother, Augustine Joseph (Gussie).
The remains are resting at Bethany after 1:15 p.m. where a Bible Vigil will be held Monday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel. Burial in Bethany Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish.
Margaret Hood
84, North Sydney
Margaret Eleanor Hood, 84, of Musgrave Lane, North Sydney died Saturday Oct. 30, 1999 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Lena (Gunn) Hood. She was an adherent of St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
Surviving are brother Carmen, New York and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother Harry and three sisters Mabel (Mrs. Onslow Blagdol), Violet (Mrs. Patrick Haley), Ruth (Mrs. Herbert Jennex).
Visitation Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral Service will take place Tuesday 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Donations may be made to Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation.
Julia A. Jockemeck
79, Sydney
Mrs. Julia A. Jockemeck, 79, of 20 Tillock Dr., Sydney, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Emily (Trojan) Miecznik.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Polish Church and a former member of St. Mary’s Alter Society. She served as president of Celtic Manor for the past 15 years and was a well known seamstress. She will be sadly missed by her buddy Elsie and the ladies of Tillock Dr.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol MacAulay and Paula Galbraith, both of Sydney; son Joseph (Norma), Kingston, Ont.; sister Mary Payn, Ottawa; grandchildren Kevin and Paul Jockemeck, Randy and Joel Cormier, Erica and Tyler Galbraith; great-grandchild Donovan Galbraith and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Paul in 1988 and infant twins Paul and Pauline.
There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Polish Church with Rev. Ted Rusnak officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 15 Mandaville Court, Halifax, B3M 3H5.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Donald Allan (Danny) MacKinnon
80, River Ryan
Donald Allan (Danny) MacKinnon, 80 of 7 School St., River Ryan, and a former resident of New Victoria, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
He was the son of the late Archie and Marcella MacLellan MacKinnon from Ingonish. He served in the military police, Royal Canadian Army in the Second World War. He was retired from the coal mines and also worked in fishing and forestry. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a great storyteller.
He is survived by 11 daughters, Dannena MacLellan, Bay St. Lawrence, Loretta Hine, Ontario, Dee Dee Vik (Eric), New Waterford, Georgina Gallant (Brian), Halifax, Bertha Detienne (Robert), River Ryan, Veronica Campbell (Jimmy Gouthro), Reserve, Velvet MacEachern (Keith), Lingan, Laurie Kanarie, New Waterford, Brenda Paquet (Alain), Ontario and April MacKinnon (Jimmie Flemming), New Waterford; sons, John Allister (DA) MacKinnon (Carol), St. Margarets Village, Danny MacKinnon (Karen), Shilo, Manitoba, Frank MacKilnon (Angela), New Victoria, Paul MacKinnon (Sonya), New Waterford; 32 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers George, Paul, Ingonish; sisters, Katie, Emma and Margaret.
Predeceased by his wife Theresa Gatza on August 8, 1990; infant son Daniel Anthony; brothers, Alec, William and John.
Visitation will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Monday 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Brian (Buddy) McIntyre

Brian (Buddy) McIntyre, 27 of 38 MacKinnon’s Lane, Dominion, passed away Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the QE II Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Glace @ay, Brian was the loving son of Bernie and Carol (Stewart) McIntyre. Brian was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport and also graduated from Special Education classes in 1993 from Bridgeport School.
Brian is also survived by brothers Robert (Claudette), Kitchener, Ont., Kelly, Halifax; sister Adelle, Dominion and paternal grandmother Mary Kelly, Dominion; nephews Kenneth, Dominion, Jarrott Kitchener, Ont.; also several aunts and uncles.
Brian is predeceased by his maternal grandparents and paternal grandfather.
Visitation will take place today (Monday), Nov. 1, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m., in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Vernelda Ann (Blackie) Young
67, Sydney Mines
Vernelda Ann (Blackie) Young, 67, of Crescent St., Sydney Mines, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Doris (Laidlaw) Blackie. She was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines.
Vernelda is survived by daughters, Constance Yakemchuck, Shirley Yakemchuck and son, David Yakemchuck, all of Sydney, Caroline (Mrs. Bobby Keough), Halifax, Nancy (Mrs. Kevin Mailman), Sydney. Also survived by sisters, Sarah King, Florence, Lobellia Doyle, Sydney Mines; brothers, Joey Blackie, Millville and Ernie Blackie, Guelph, Ont.; 8 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband William Young; brother William and one sister Ruth King.
Visitation will be held at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Funeral Service will be held at Carman United Church 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
