Donald Allan (Danny) MacKinnon
80, River Ryan
Donald Allan (Danny) MacKinnon, 80 of 7 School St., River Ryan and a former resident of New Victoria, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
He was the son of the late Archie and Marcella MacLellan MacKinnon from Ingonish.
He served in the military police, Royal Canadian Army in the Second World War. He was retired from the coal mines and also worked in fishing and forestry. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a great storyteller.
He is survived by 11 daughters, Dannena MacLellan, Bay St. Lawrence, Loretta Hine, Ontario, Dee Dee Vik (Eric), New Waterford, Georgina Gallant (Brian), Halifax, Bertha Detienne (Robert), River Ryan, Veronica Campbell (Jimmy Gouthro), Reserve, Velvet MacEachern (Keith), Lingan, Laurie Kanarie, New Waterford, Brenda Paquet (Alain), Ontario, Marlene Vanderlugt, Ontario and April MacKinnon (Jimmie Flemming), New Waterford; sons, John Allister (DA) MacKinnon (Carol), St. Margarets Village, Danny MacKinnon (Karen), Shilo, Man., Frank MacKinnon (Angela), New Victoria, Paul MacKinnon (Sonya), New Waterford; 32 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, George, Paul, Ingonish; sisters, Katie, Emma and Margaret.
Predeceased by his wife, Theresa Gatza, Aug. 8, 1990, infant son, Daniel Anthony, brothers, Alec, William and John.
Visitation was held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Monday 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

E. Frances (Fran) MacMillan
84, New Waterford
E. Frances (Fran) MacMillan, 84, of 744 Dominion St., New Waterford, and a former resident of Roaches Road, Lingan, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Julia (MacDonald) MacMillan. She was a member of Mount Carmel Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Sister Rita G. MacMillan, SC and Sister Frances G. MacMillan, SC, both of St. Agnes Convent in New Waterford; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Thomas.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral is Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Gloria Moore
50, North Sydney
Gloria Diane Moore, 50, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home and formerly of 44 Holic Ave., passed away Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was the special child of the late George and Greta (Gale) Moore.
She is survived by sisters, Gale (Mark) Flemming, Guelph, Ont. and Judy, North Sydney; brothers, Charlie, New Waterford and Reid (Debbie), Bras d’Or. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sister, Georgina McGrath.
There will be no visitation by request. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney with Archdeacon Reginald MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.

Donald Joseph (Danny) Fraser

Donald Joseph (Danny) Fraser of Queen Street, Sydney Mines, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born Nov. 10, 1921 at Meat Cove, N.S., he was the son of the late Simon and Flora Ann (MacKinnon) Fraser.
He was a veteran of the Second World War No. 6 District Depot C.A. After the war he was employed as a fisherman until moving to Toronto where he was employed by the CIL Company until his retirement. Following retirement he returned to Cape Breton.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Young) Fraser; son, Blaine, Toronto; stepson, Larry Young; sister, Margaret Cook, New Waterford; brothers, George Fraser, Mississauga, Ernie Fraser, Halifax; granddaughter, Ruth Ann, Ontario and 22 nieces and nephews and a special little girl, a fill in granddaughter, Kayla Rose.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Marcella Moore and his first wife, Estelle (Laurent) Fraser.
Visitation for the late Mr. Fraser will take place today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Pius X Church with Fr. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Bertha Selina Frison
79, Reserve Mines
Bertha Selina Frison, 79, of 2315 Glace Bay Rd., Reserve Mines, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex, South Street, Glace Bay.
Born in Dadizelle, Belgium, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bettens.
She was very active in and held many positions with many senior citizens and pensioners organizations. She was a charter member of the National Senior Citizens and Pensioners Federation, where she served as secretary and vice-president for many years; also the Federation of Senior Citizens and Pensioners of Nova Scotia, where she served as secretary for 23 years. She was a charter member of the Cape Breton Council of Senior Citizens and Pensioners where she served as secretary for many years and a charter member of the Reserve Mines Senior Citizens and Pensioners where she served as secretary and president. She was a member of the Cape Breton Chapter Ostomy Society. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines and a member of St. Anthony’s Sodality.
She is survived by three daughters, Marie MacQueen (Bernie), Reserve Mines, Diane MacIntyre (John), Lower Sackville and Sandra MacNeil (Myron), Reserve Mines; one son, Julien (Colleen), Reserve Mines; brothers, John (Jack) Bettens, Glace Bay; four sisters, Simone Hayes, Glace Bay, Paula MacNeil, Reserve Mines, Suzanne MacQuarrie and Agnes MacPherson, both of Glace Bay; 12 grandchildren, Beverly, John, Robert, Donna, Bill, Yvonne, Jean, Jim, Wayne, Michael, Chad and Derek and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, William (Yum) Frison in 1983, one brother, Frank Bettens and one great-grandson, Dustin.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Frison will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.

Flora Margaret MacMillan
92, New Glasgow
Flora Margaret MacMillan, 92, of 170 Grant St., New Glasgow, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Flora (MacKay) Fraser.
She was educated in Halifax schools and later graduated from Dalhousie University in 1930. In 1930, she married Rev. Malcolm MacMillan of Forks Baddeck and became a constant companion and source of encouragement to him in their pastorates of Forks Baddeck-Middle River, Malpeque, P.E.I., Westville, New Waterford and Moncton, N.B.
In 1960, they moved to Halifax when her husband was appointed chaplain at the Halifax hospitals. During their years in Halifax, she continued to be active in many church organizations and enjoyed her volunteer involvement with the children at the IWK Hospital.
She is survived by daughters, Anne Marshall, New Glasgow, Sheila (David) Owen, Riverview, N.B.; four grandchildren, David (Sandra) Marshall, Coldbrook, N.S., Robert Marshall, New Glasgow, Scott (Barbara) Owen, Stoney Creek, Ont., Shari Owen, Toronto; two great-grandchildren, Jason and Stephanie Marshall, Coldbrook; sisters, Rubena Cole, Storrs, Conn. and Mary Carlos, Halifax.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Dr. Malcolm MacMillan.
Her remains will rest at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow with visitation Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Flora’s life will be held at the Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Norman Marple officiating.
Her remains will then be transferred to the Forks-Baddeck United Church, Cape Breton where a service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. David Lutes officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. Donations in her memory may be made to the Mission and Service Fund, Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, the IWK-Grace Hospital, Halifax, the St. Andrews Cemetery Fund, Forks Baddeck or to a charity of choice.
Ella Zong
86, Sydney
Ella Zong, 86, of 100 Spruce Haven Dr., Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Aucoin) Arsenault. She was a member of Holy Rosary Parish, Westmount and the parish CWL.
Surviving are four sisters, Margaret Phalen, Halifax, Sr. Jean Arsenault, Mount St. Vincent Motherhouse, Halifax, Eileen Stonley, Sudbury, Ont. and Mary MacDonald, Sydney; one brother, Joseph Arsenault, Sydney. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband, Ernest in 1998, sisters, Sophie Whitby, Westmount and Rose Chiasson, Westmount.
The late Mrs. Zong will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Friday, Nov. 5, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Rosary Church with Rev. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment in parish cemetery, Westmount.
