John W. Munroe
Reserve Mines
John W. Munroe, 73, of 55 Station St., Reserve Mines, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Ella Mae (MacKinnon) Munroe. Mr. Munroe was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and Pensioners Club in Reserve Mines. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 2, Reserve Mines. He was employed with Devco for 28 years and with the Department of Transportation for 10 years.
Surviving are daughters, Helen (Mrs. Blair Tatlock), New Waterford, Nadine (Mrs. Dwight Oliver), Reserve Mines; sons, Calder (Pat), Stratford, Ont. and Wayne (Carol), Dartmouth; brother, William, Mount Uniacke; sisters, Sally, Ontario and Charlotte, Reserve Mines; grandchildren, Lana Peck, John Blair Tatlock, Calder Munroe, Jennifer and Alicia Oliver and Kyle Munroe; great-grandchildren, Meaghan and Riley Peck. Also surviving is special companion, Viola.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased his loving wife, the former Remigius (Duxie) McNeil in 1992, daughter, Marilyn and son, Blair, brother, Roy and sisters, Mary and Margaret.
Visitation for the late Mr. Munroe will be held Friday, Nov. 5, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in St Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or Cape Breton Palliative Care are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Olive Ileen Murray
86, North Sydney
Olive Ileen Murray, 86, a resident of 12 Campbell St., North Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late William and Amelia (Billard) Amey. She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church and a member of Ruth Unit UCW.
Surviving two daughters, Sheila (Mrs. Ronald Lyman), Orlando, Fla., Wanda (Mrs. James Davidson), North Sydney; four sons, Phillip, Sydney Mines, Roy (Catherine), Thunder Bay, Ont., Gerald (Marilyn), Kentville, Roland (Janet), Ottawa, Ont.; four sisters, Ruth Forsey, Ethel Francis and Jean Walsh, all of North Sydney, Gloria Neilson, Vancouver, B.C.; one brother, Gerald, Halifax; nine grandchildren, Alan, Stephen, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ronald, Amy, Brian, Jason and Shannon; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Kathleen; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roy and three brothers, Arthur, William and Roland.
Visitation today (Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Saturday 11 a.m. from St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with the Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Margaret Esther Bailey
89, Sydney Mines
Margaret Esther Bailey, 89, of 42 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Nov. 5, 1999.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Esther (O’Toole) Rateau. She was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines.
Surviving are her daughters, Betty (Mrs. Ronald MacIntyre), Barbara (Mrs. David Martin) and Sheila (Mrs. Robert Luker), all of Sydney Mines; sons, Joseph and Eddie, Sydney Mines and Claude (Leah) and John (Marlene), North Sydney. Also surviving is her sister, Elizabeth Lipon, Weirton, W.Va.; her brothers, John, Weirton, W.Va. and Angus, Florida; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandsons.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edwin, son, Henry, four sisters and two brothers.
She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her family.
Visitation on Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral is Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Helen Marguerite (Howley) Buchanan
Bras d'Or
Helen Marguerite (Howley) Buchanan, born in Bras d’Or on January 27, 1910, died at the Northside General Community Guest Home on Nov. 7, 1999. Helen was the daughter of the late Ella (Fraser) and Joseph Howley. She was a life-long member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or.
Helen was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, John Buchanan in 1981, also by her brothers Gratten, Milton, Jack and Pat and by her sister Annie (Howley) Devison.
She is survived by her sister Mary (Howley) Knickle, Halifax; sons, Arthur, Halifax, Alex and his wife Tracey of Sydney Mines, and daughters Anne MacNeil, Sussex, N.B., and Carolyn and her husband Jack Toomey, Bras d’Or. Also by grandchildren Julie and Karen Buchanan, Halifax, Beth, Shaemus and Keighan Toomey, Bras d’Or, and Laura and Alex MacNeil, Sussex, N.B.
A 1933 graduate of Nova Scotia Normal College, Helen was a dedicated teacher who enjoyed a lengthy and unique teaching career throughout Northern and Eastern Cape Breton, including North Ingonish, Englishtown, New Campbellton, Big Bank, Mill Creek, Alder Point and Little Bras d’Or, retiring in 1958. Helen was a long-time member of the CWL of St. Joseph’s Parish and had been a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association. She will be remembered by those who knew her for both her kindness and her faith.
Visitation today (Monday) 7-9 p.m. only and Tuesday 7-9 p.m. only at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral is Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Thomas Gordon
88, Sydney Mines
Thomas Gordon, 88, of 94 Main St., Sydney Mines, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Frenchvale, he was the son of the late John and Susannah (Holland) Gordon. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and was on the parish council for a number of years. He worked in his early years as a miner in Florence Colliery. He served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War. He worked at the Naval Base for 17 years and then 14 years with the U.I.C. until his retirement. He was an active member for over 50 years of Branch #8, Royal Canadian Legion, serving on many committees and an executive member for a number of years. He received the Palm Leaf to Meritorious Service Medal. He organized and became the first commanding officer of 591 Dunlop Squadron of Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He was very active in the British Canadian Co-op and was president for a number of years. He was a member of the Ceilidh Golden K, Kiwanis Club, Sydney Mines. He was a past member of the Sydney Mines Board of Health.
He was very active in sports having played baseball, hockey and rugby. His main love in the sportsfield was boxing; a sport he spent 67 years in. He was an official on many Nova Scotia Provincial boxing teams and coach of Northside Amateur Boxing Club. He was a lifetime member of Nova Scotia Amateur Boxing Association. He was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1987 and a bona fide (Boxing Aficionado) in 1989.
Survived by his loving wife, the former Hazel (Poole); daughters Betty Lou (Brian) Grimsby, Ont., and Edwina (Donald), Sydney; daughter-in-law, Betty, Bridgewater; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also survived by nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Robert and several brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in Trinity Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake and Rev. Arthur Nash officiating. Burial to follow at Trinity Anglican Church Cemetery, Shore Rd., Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Anglican Church General Memorial Fund, Canadian Cancer Society or Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Association.
Christine Edna (Tena) Horne
82, Sydney
Christine Edna (Tena) Horne, 82, of 147 Columbia St., Sydney, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
She is survived by three sons Harold, Sydney, Gary (wife Delores), Sydney, and David (wife Judy), Halifax; two daughters, Edna (Don) Williamson, Hamilton, Ont., and Shirley (Tony) Wallace, Hamilton, Ont.; sister Ida Cloutier, Sydney; two brothers, Henry and Robert, both in Ontario; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by four sisters, Etta, Effie, Ruby and Patsy and one brother Donald.
There will be no visitation. A private family service under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating.
Memorials may be made to any charity.
Robert Matthews MacDonald
75, Englishtown
Robert Matthews MacDonald, 75, of Englishtown, died Nov. 4, 1999, in Baddeck.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Capt. Dan and Lex (MacLeod) MacDonald. He was a member of St. Marks Presbyterian Church, Englishtown. After a science degree from Dalhousie, he worked in Ottawa for the Defense Research Laboratory for two or three years. He then returned to Nova Scotia to teach high school in New Waterford, Sydney Academy and Baddeck. His dedication and impressive knowledge of science made his teaching memorable. In each of the above schools, along with teaching chemistry, physics and math, he coached basketball. In Baddeck he began a very successful mini junior and high school basketball program. Along with being a coach and referee, he was one of the founding fathers of the Nova Scotia Athletic Foundation and Nova Scotia Headmasters. His love for the game of basketball and his confident belief of how much good this activity teaches our young people has always been a guiding force in his coaching career. Baddeck Academy is honored to have “Red Bob” MacDonald’s name used to head the title of the tenth annual Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Surviving are brother Alexander, California; sister Pearl MacKeen, Toronto; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sister, Lillian; brother, Donald.
No visitation by request. Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at St. Marks Presbyterian Church, Englishtown, with Rev. Lloyd Murdock assisted by Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial in Harbour View.
