Flora Ann MacLellan
83, Scotchtown
Flora Ann MacLellan, 83, of 21 Amelia St., Scotchtown, formerly of Meat Cove, Inv. Co., died at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on Nov. 6, 1999.
Born in Meat Cove, she was the daughter of Simone George MacLellan and Marcella (MacEachern) MacLellan. She was a member of St. Michael Parish, River Ryan. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the eldest of 15 siblings.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marcella Fitzgerald, Edmonton, Emma Watson (Jerry), Ottawa, Ont., and Georgina MacLellan, New Waterford; seven sons, Donald MacLellan (Caroline), New Waterford, Paul MacLellan (Mary), New Waterford, John MacLellan, New Waterford, Hector MacLellan (Danielle), Ontario, Michael MacLellan (Terry), British Columbia, James MacLellan (Vivian), New Waterford, George MacLellan (Shelly), New Waterford. She is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Emma Hines, Meat Cove, Janet Sisson, Hamilton, Ont., Mrs. Peggy MacIsaac, Antigonish, and Mrs. Loraine Fraser, Inverness and five brothers Kelly MacLellan, Meat Cove, Alan J. MacLellan, Meat Cove, Francis MacLellan, Meat Cove, Hector MacLellan, Kelowna, B.C., and George MacLellan, Sugar Loaf. Also survived by 19 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband John Thomas MacLellan; son Alex MacLellan, New Waterford and infant child Georgina, age four. Also predeceased by four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Fraser, Mrs. Marcella McLeod, Mrs. Catherine Chamberland and Mrs. Veronica Fraser, all of Meat Cove; also predeceased by two brothers, D.A. MacLellan and Iah MacLellan, both of Meat Cove.
Visitation was held on Sunday, Nov. 7 from 7-9 p.m. and will be Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, River Ryan. Burial in parish cemetery.
Joseph Daniel MacNeil
72, Dartmouth
Joseph Daniel MacNeil, 72, of Dartmouth, formerly of Irish Vale, Cape Breton, passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 1999 at home.
Born at the Rear of Irish Cove he was the son of the late Angus and Sarah Anne (MacNeil) MacNeil. He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Dartmouth. He was an avid reader and also was a great lover of animals.
He is survived by a dear friend and companion Ann Hicks, Dartmouth; sister Mae (Mrs. Joseph Nickerson), Halifax; adopted brother James, and three nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by three sisters Catherine (Kitty) MacNeil, Marie (Mrs. George Myers) and Sadie MacNeil and a brother James in infancy. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Dartmouth. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Johnstown, Cape Breton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the VON.
Daniel Joseph Mader

Daniel Joseph Mader, 54 of Sydney Mines died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Stanley and Rose (Troke) Mader.
He is survived by daughter Kimberly, Japan; his partner Irene; two brothers, Stan (wife Marjorie), Sydney, and Francis (wife Glenda), Westville, N.S.; two sisters, Helen, Toronto, and Betty (Richard) Paruch, Sydney. Also many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday from 7-9 p.m. A memorial mass will be held at Immaculate Heart Church, George St. on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Gary MacPherson officiating.
Brian Reashore
55, Sydney Mines
Brian Reashore, 55, of 34 Beech St., Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bras d’Or, he was the son of the late Daniel Reashore and Marie (Guy) Reashore. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his sisters, Karen Boutilier and Eileen Reashore, Bras d’Or, Sandra MacInnis and Patricia MacDonald, Sydney Mines; brothers, Billy and Terry, South Shore, N.S., Blair, Sydney Mines, Donnie, Bras d’Or, and Kevin, Ross Ferry.
Visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral is Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Norman Patrick Roach
66, Reserve Mines
Norman Patrick Roach, 66, of 181 Tompkinsville, Reserve Mines, passed away, on Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Glace Bay Heath Care Complex.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late David and Mary Helen (Doucette) Roach. He was a former member of Reserve Mines Volunteer Fire Dept. and an active skater. He also worked in the coal mines with Dominion Coal Company and C.B. Development Corp. in #26 Colliery, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery.
He is survived by his wife Patricia (Patsy) (Currie) Roach; daughter, Valerie (Mrs. Joe Burke), Glace Bay; sons, Blair, Reserve, Glen (Kim), Enfield, N.S., Malcolm (Lisa), Norman Jr. (Margaret), Kitchener, Ont.; grandchildren, Patricia Burke, Eddie Spencer, Gracym Cassidy; brothers, Harry (Treasa), Reserve, Leo (Irene), Reserve, Dan Joe (Rita), Ontario, Ronnie, John (Ailee); sisters, Annie, Reserve, Pauline (Rickie Hinchey), Leona Durocher (Charles), Florida.
Predeceased by a son John David; sister Lucy Olive and brother John Cecil.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 am. at St. Joseph Church in Reserve Mines with Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Calvin (Cal) E.W. Rose
53, Glace Bay
Calvin (Cal) Rose, 53, of 33 Seaview Street, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital with his sister by his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Martha (Clarke) Rose. He was a member of Epworth United Church. Cal was an avid musician around Glace Bay, and played with a number of bands. He was well known for his cowboy hat and glasses and his favorite cigars (Colts).
Cal is survived by son Shane (Kyla), Ont.; daughter Crystal, Glace Bay; sisters, Neila, Ken Billyard, Jeanette, Elson Faulkner, both of Dunnville, Ont., Martha, Glace Bay, Andie, Norm Appleton, Ont., Bernice, Ont., Blanche (Leo) Coleman, New Brunswick; brothers Jack (Liz), Annapolis Valley, Ivan (Ruth), Bo (Bev), Mel, all of Ontario; granddaughter Asheley; nieces, Megan, Rene, Sarah, Chelsey, and nephew Andrew, all of Ontario.
Predeceased by a sister Irene; brother Jim and by his best friend Allan Jones.
Visitation will be held in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay, Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., in the Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Cremation will take place and burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery.
Howard Edgar Stevens
82, Glace Bay
Howard Edgar Stevens, 82, of Maxie St., Glace Bay, died Friday Nov. 5, 1999, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Fourchu, Richmond Co., he was the son of the late Leslie and Phoebe Jane (MacDonald) Stevens. Howard grew up in Glace Bay, served time with the Canadian Army during Second World War then worked for Dominion Coal Co. and later with Devco until his retirement in 1982.
In his early years he loved to swim, was an avid outdoorsman, loved to play his fiddle in the company of his family.
He is survived by son Ronnie at home (fiance Bev MacDonald); daughter Donna (Robert MacNeil), New Glasgow, as well as two granddaughters Seonaid and Hilary; brothers Edison (Pearl) Stevens, Alf (Mary) Hardy, both of Glace Bay.
Predeceased by his wife Catherine (MacDonald); brothers, Ernest and Percy.
In accordance with his wishes, there was no visitation. A family service was held Sunday in the Patten Funeral Home Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay, with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Burial was held in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
