Percy Andrew Douglas
63, Glace Bay
Percy Andrew Douglas, 63, of 4 Gordon St., Glace Bay, was pronounced dead Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George P. and Jane (Bonnar) Douglas. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Glace Bay. He was a former resident of Third Street in the Hub, Glace Bay.
He is survived by brother, Jimmy, Montreal; sisters, Nellie Jones, Montreal; Josephine Nurse, Glace Bay, with whom he resided; Margaret Howell, Halifax and Viola Douglas, Montreal. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, George, Charlie and Herbie and sister, Dorothy.
Visitation will be at Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay today from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
Funeral will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Gloria M. Jabalee
North Sydney
Gloria M. Jabalee, a resident of 162 Brook St. Ext., North Sydney, passed away peacefully Monday Nov. 8, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.
Born in Haouch, Barada Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Haikal and Haoula Mehanna. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church North Sydney.
Surviving are her husband, Michael; three sons, Paul (Amanda), George (Laura), both of Groves Point, Peter, at home; one daughter, Anne Louise (Mrs. Richard Walsh), North Sydney. She leaves behind five grandchildren who she deeply loved, Kasandra, Christina, Ainsley, Mitchell and Michael; also one sister, Jamael Akoury, Lebanon; two brothers, Abraham and Fred, Lebanon.
Predeceased by one son, John F. Kennedy Jabalee and one sister, Lydia Salamy.
Visitation will be held Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass 2 p.m. Wednesday from St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery North Sydney.
She was deeply loved by many and will be sadly missed.
Pauline Margaret MacLean
79, Sydney
Pauline Margaret (McDaniel) MacLean, 79, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at home.
Born in Margaree, she was the daughter of the late George James and Sarah Katherine McDaniel of Margaree.
She was predeceased by her husband, Angus Joseph MacLean in 1993, her daughter, Helen in 1989, a son, James in infancy and her son-in-law, Matt Doucet in 1996.
She is survived by three daughters, Georgina Doucet, Halifax, Barbara (John), Ontario, Patricia, Ontario; four sons, Alphonse (Edna), Alberta, Anselm (Betty), Sydney, Colin (Margaret), Glace Bay, David, Ontario; four sisters, Mrs. Josephine Snow, Glace Bay, Mrs. Anna John, Halifax, Mrs. Helen Pate, Halifax, Mrs. Anita Smith, Michigan; two brothers, Herbert (Margaret), Ontario, Austin (Joan), Margaree; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The late Mrs. MacLean will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or a charity of choice.
Calvin (Cal) E.W. Rose
53, Glace Bay
Calvin (Cal) Rose, 53, of 33 Seaview St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, with his sister by his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Martha (Clarke) Rose. He was a member of Epworth United Church.
Cal was an avid musician around Glace Bay, and played with a number of bands. He was well known for his cowboy hat and glasses and his favourite cigars (Colts).
Cal is survived by son, Shane (Kyla), Ontario; daughter, Crystal, Glace Bay; sisters, Neila, Ken Billyard, Jeanette, Elson Faulkner, both of Dunnville, Ont., Martha, Glace Bay, Joyce (Norm), Appleton, Ont., Angie (Gary) White, Toronto, Ont., Bernice, Ontario, Blanche (Leo) Coleman, New Brunswick; brothers, Jack (Liz), Annapolis Valley, Ivan (Ruth), Bo (Bev), Mel, all of Ontario; granddaughter Asheley; nieces, Megan, Rene, Sarah, Chelsey, and nephew, Andrew, all of Ontario.
Predeceased by a sister, Irene, brother, Jim and by his best friend, Allan Jones.
Visitation will be held in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., in the Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Cremation will take place and burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery.
Cecil John Timmerman
75, Glace Bay
Mr. Cecil J. Timmerman, 75, of 85 Lower McLean St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late William and Martha (Roth) Timmerman. He was employed at one time at the Sydney Steel Plant. He was a naval veteran having served overseas with MTB’S.
Cecil is survived by his loving wife, Valerie (MacIntyre) Timmerman; daughters, Claudia, Mrs. Basil McKinnon, Glace Bay, Kathy Brown, Toronto; son, Eric (Marion), Glace Bay, and grandchildren. Also surviving are brother, Arthur (Sadie), Glace Bay; sisters, Louise Guy, Dartmouth, Evelyn (Bert) Boone, Cambridge, Ont.
Predeceased by a brother, William and an infant son, Cecil John.
In accordance with his wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held under the auspices of Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Donations may be made to the cancer society or to a charity of choice.
Alice (Peach) Gilmet
58, Glace Bay
Alice (Peach) Gilmet, 58, of 55 Minto St. and formerly of Dominion, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Dominion, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Bernard and Amy (Peach) MacDonald. She was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church. Alice, known for her generous smile, loved to play 45s and enjoyed darts, especially at the Caledonia Club and Dominion Sandbar Lounge.
She is survived by her husband, George; two sons, David (Gail) MacKenzie, CFB North Bay and Archibald MacKenzie, Kitchener; one daughter, Barbara MacKenzie (Lorne), Kitchener and by grandchildren, Mitchell, David and Matthew. She is also survived by a brother, Francis (Jackie) Peach, Glace Bay; sister, Mary Jane MacDonald, Glace Bay; stepbrother, John (Yvonne) Peach, Sydney; a special aunt, Olive Clark, Kingston, Ont. and by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Centreville Anglican Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Alice may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Glace Bay Food Bank or the charity of one’s choice.
Dorothy Gray Hartigan
85, New Victoria
Dorothy Gray Hartigan, 85, 147 Daley Rd., New Victoria, died in the Glace Bay General Hospital, Monday, Nov. 8, 1999.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Sarah (Phillips) Boutilier. She was a former member of Calvin United Church and Pythias Sisters.
At one time she worked as chief telephone operator in the New Waterford Phone Exchange. She also worked as night auditor at the Isle Royale Hotel, Sydney. In her younger years, she lived in Deer Lake, Nfld., where she was assistant financial officer with Chiasson and MacDonald and Peterborough Inc.
Surviving are two sons, David (Maureen), Windsor Junction, Halifax Co.; Donald (Donna), Oromocto, N.B.; two sisters survive, Rita Peddle, New Victoria and Mildred Hill, Daley Road, New Victoria; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lieutenant Colonel David Cameron Hartigan, RCA; four brothers, John, Clayton, Wilson and Gordon.
Visitation will take place Thursday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m., in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Friday. The body will be removed to Calvin Church, New Waterford at noon followed by funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in the Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
