Winston Carl (Winky) Babstock
58, Glace Bay
Winston Carl (Winky) Babstock, 58, of 14 Crest St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and close friends, Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the loving husband of Donna (Crocker); loving father of his four daughters, Shauna (Mrs. Todd Binder), Paula (Mrs. David Campbell), Leslie (Mrs. John Tobin), Tracey (Mrs. Mark Hanrahan). He is also survived by his mother, Eva; brothers, Thomas (Toosie), Wayne and his sister, June (Politte). He will never be forgotten by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, known to them as their very special ‘da’.
He was predeceased by his infant twin sons, Shane and Shawn; his father, Thomas Sr. and his brother, Harry.
Winston was a dedicated member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 682 for over 30 years. He will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman and a friend to many.
Visitation will take place today (Thursday) 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Fev Arnold officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Leonard Henry Croney
78, Glace Bay
Leonard Henry Croney, 78, of 122 Fifth St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Leonard and Mary (Bonnar) Croney. Mr. Croney worked in No. 12 Colliery, New Waterford. He served overseas in the Second World War with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. He was a lifetime member of the Hub Club and the Men’s Dart League. He was involved with ball which he enjoyed very much.
Mr. Croney is survived by his long time companion, Sis McLean; daughter, Florence, Glace Bay; sons, Robert (Joan), Glace Bay and Blair, North Bay, Ont. Also surviving are several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Danny; sister, Florence Ingraham and brother, Jerry Croney.
In accordance with Leonard’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
He was deeply loved by many and will be sadly missed.

Mary Hazel Fanning
84, Sydney
Mary Hazel Fanning, 84, of 350 Terrace St., Sydney, formerly of South Bar, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at South Bar, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Exilda (Fougere) Mombourquette. She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by two daughters, Delores Fanning (Cal MacAskill), North River and Colleen (Mrs. Jim Sloan), Antigonish; five sons, Michael Fanning (Sarah MacAskill), Sydney, Peter (Sheila) Fanning, Westmount, George (Veronica) Fanning, Antigonish, Nicholas Fanning, Antigonish and Johnny Fanning, New Brunswick; two sisters, Gladys Corbett, Sydney and Tilly Gillis, Toronto, Ont. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Peter; daughter Josephine; grandson Sheldon and by three sisters and four brothers. The late Mrs. Fanning will have visitation on Friday, Nov. 12 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Inter-ment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Jane Julia (Isadore) Stevens
62, Wagmatcook
Jane Julia (Isadore) Stevens, 62, of Wagmatcook Reserve, Vict. Co., N.S., passed away on Nov. 9, 1999, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, with her niece Molly Pierro, by her side.
Born in Wagmatcook on March 31, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Nancy (Doucet) and Michael Isadore. She was a member of the Queen of the World Church of Wagmatcook. She was an active member of Associate of the Congregation of Notre Dame. Jane was one of the five original members of Wagmatcook Church Committee. She was always there for other people and various other functions. She did Meals on Wheels for the elders on the Reserve. She was an avid bingo player. Her extreme kindness and generosity will be greatly missed by the whole community and the two original church committee members, Annie Pierro and Elizabeth Peck.
Surviving are her husband Kaptain Ronald Sr.; fours sons, Dennis, Ronald Jr., David (Janey) and Kevin; two daughters, Constance and Marcia; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters, Flora Robertson, Montreal, Caroline Bernard, Afton, Bessie Christmas, Membertou and Helena Isadore, Baddeck; one brothers, Stephen Isadore, Wagmatcook.
She was predeceased by three sons, Gerald, Keith and Douglas; one daughter Deborah; sisters, Pauline, Virginia, Mary Bridget and Irene.
Visitation at the family residence on Thursday after 5 p.m. and all day Friday. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Queen of the World Church in Wagmatcook with Rev. Hector MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Kevin (K.O.) Whalen
42, North Sydney
Kevin Owen (K.O.) Whalen, 42, a resident of 5 Collins Dr., North Sydney, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of Kevin and Madonna (Phalen) Whalen of Edward Street, North Sydney. He worked as an oil burner mechanic for many years and operated MacKeigan’s Heating Services in North Sydney. He was a member of Father William Kiely Council, Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
Surviving besides his parents, are his wife, Ann (Thomas); two sons, Adam and Mark, both at home; two brothers, Richard, New Minas and Sean (Debbie), Boca Raton, Florida; four sisters, Maureen (Clayton) Guy, Ann (Donald) Keigan, Denise, all of North Sydney, Vera (Everett) MacIntosh, Sydney Mines; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Martha Whalen, Sydney Mines and 12 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Frank Whalen and maternal grandparents, Euphemia and Leo Phalen.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Friday 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation or to the IWK Children’s Hospital.
Michael Gerard Anderson
35, London, Ont., Sydney, N.S.
Michael Gerard Anderson, 35, formerly of York Street, Sydney, passed away on Nov. 10, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, Ont.
Michael is the beloved son of George and Mary (Kennedy) Anderson of Irish Vale.
Michael is survived by his loving partner, Andre Boudreau, formerly of Sydney; sisters, Tara (Peter) Manley, Portage, Linda (Gordon) MacDougall, Westmount; brothers, Greg (Angela), Yarmouth, Allan (Rose), New Victoria, Jackie (Noelle), Irish Vale, Logan (Sherry), Sydney. Michael will be deeply missed by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Michael was predeceased by his grandparents, Emanuel and Georgina (King) Anderson and Alex and Annie May (MacNeil) Kennedy.
There will be visitation Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joseph Gillis officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Maria Gallivan
82, Sydney
Maria Gallivan, 82, of 39 Mercer St., Sydney, died peacefully Nov. 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a long illness.
Born and raised in Whitney Pier, she was a daughter of the late John Dan and Mary (Johnstone) MacNeil. She was a lifetime member of Holy Redeemer Church.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James (Bud) Gallivan; sons, James (Bud) (Margie), Norwalk, Connecticut, Bill (Winnifred), Gary (Karen), Sydney, Terrance (Donna), Halifax; daughters, Mary (Earl) LeBlanc, Janice (Brian) Black, Sydney, Elaine (Mike) MacPhee, Halifax; brothers, Michael (Ann) MacNeil, Gerald (Dewey) (Joan) MacNeil, Lloyd (Anita) MacNeil, all of Sydney; sister Catherine (Tony) Orychock, South Bar; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister Margaret (John) Raoul and three brothers in infancy.
Visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
