Calvin (Gregory) Gilbert
59, Glace Bay
Calvin (Gregory) Gilbert, 59, of Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Jennie (MacDonald) Gilbert. Calvin was an employee of the Glace Bay Water Department and was supervisor for eight years until his retirement in 1990. He was also a member of the Glace Bay Volunteer Fire Department for 11 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Kelloway); sons, Bradley (Kathy), Glace Bay, Calvin Jr. (Tanya), New Waterford, Thomas at home; daughters, Zena MacRae, New Waterford, Ellen (Rodney) Emsile, Dartmouth and Lindsay at home. Also survived by brothers, Peter ‘Buddy’ (Sheila), Ottawa, Vernon (Lori), Sydney; sisters, Linda (Kenny) Aucoin, Glace Bay, Velma Varrence, New Waterford; sister-in-law, Frances Gilbert, Glace Bay; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Calvin was predeceased by his first wife, Delores (Boutilier); brothers, Gerald and Garfield and a sister, Pauline.
Visitation for the late Mr. Gilbert will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Saturday, Nov. 13 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Mary Elizabeth Nearing
82, Glace Bay
Mary Elizabeth Nearing, 82 of MacLeod’s Road, Glace Bay passed away Wednesday, November 10, 1999, at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.
A native and life long resident of the community, Mary was a member of Holy Family Parish and through the years was prominent in affairs of the congregation. Mary was a school teacher for 43 years and retired from Saint Anthony’s School in 1994. She was a very active member of the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union serving on many committees such as pension, finance, negotiation and an active member of the retired teacher’s association. She was an active member of the Cape Breton Regional Ladies Auxiliary and a representative of the Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia, Mary was very active on numerous other government agencies and boards.
She is survived by six sisters; Florence Chiasson, Edmonton; twins, Paula (Mrs. Harvey MacDonald), Coxheath, Pauline (Mrs. Barry MacMillan), Ontario, Eva Martin, Ontario, Cory (Mrs. Daniel Hiscott), Glace Bay and Tillie, Glace Bay; seven brothers, Johnnie (Ethel), George (Betty), Joseph Jr. (Kay), James (Marie), Wayne (Josephine), all of Glace Bay, Kevin (Marilyn), Milford Station and Frankie, British Columbia. She was an aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, but they looked on her as a loving grandmother.
She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Nearing, Sr.; mother, Matilda; sister, Bridget; and brother, Thomas.
Family will receive friends and relatives at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay on Friday, November 12, 1999 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass held at Holy Family Church, Glace Bay at 11 a.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Mary’s name.
Dr. G. Watson Sodero
F.R.C.S. (C), F.A.C.S., Sydney / Whycocomagh
Dr. G. Watson Sodero, F.R.C.S.(C), F.A.C.S., of Sydney and Whycocomagh, died on Nov. 12, 1999.
He was born in Sydney Mines in 1907, the son of the late Theodore and Margaret (Watson) Sodero. Educated in Sydney and at Dalhousie University from which he graduated in medicine (MDCM) in 1934. He practiced in Guysborough for two years before post-graduate study in surgery in London, Edinburgh, Budapest, and Vienna. He was certified by the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He began his over fifty year practice in family medicine and general surgery in Sydney in 1938. He also carried on a part-time practice in Whycocomagh. He served on committees at the Sydney City Hospital, St. Rita Hospital and was past president of the Cape Breton Medical Society. He attended St. Andrew’s Church, Sydney and Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 84 A.F. & A.M., Sydney, and past member of the Sydney Rotary and Kiwanis Golden K Clubs.
He is survived by his daughters, Jane (Geoffrey) Steele, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Susan (Rick) Seely, Saint John, New Brunswick; son, T. Peter (Elizabeth) Sodero, Halifax; sisters, Kay MacKinnon, Victoria, B.C., Con MacInnis, Sydney and six grandchildren, Suzanne Steele, Jennifer, Peter and David Seely and Jane and Stephanie Sodero.
He was predeceased by his wife, Isabel Floyd; brother, Dr. Clare Sodero, Truro and grandson, Watson Steele.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s Church, Sydney on Sunday at 3 p.m. with burial following at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
At the request of the family, expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Family flowers only.
A Masonic service will be held Saturday at 6:45 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Thomas Sydney Rigby
91, Sydney Mines
Thomas Sydney Rigby, 91, of 6 Prince St., Sydney Mines, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Westhoughton, England, he was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Brogan) Rigby. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and was employed until his retirement at Princess Colliery.
He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Evelyn Evans; brother, Roger and sister, Mabel in infancy; brothers, John, Fred and Roger, sisters, Margaret Ann Baldwin, Lillian Reidel and Lavinia Brown.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home after 7 p.m. tonight (Saturday) and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with the Rev. Brenda Drake officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Anglican Church or to a charity of choice.
Harold George Rector
70, Howie Center
Harold George Rector, of Villas St., Howie Center, passed away on Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the C.B. Healthcare Complex, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Springhill, N.S., he was the son of the late Percy and Alice (Dean) Rector. He worked with MT&T in Charlottetown, New Glasgow and Sydney and retired after 43 years of service as an Engineering Supervisor. Harold was a member of the Baptist Church and a former leader for the Boy Scouts of Canada and Cubs. He enjoyed bowling, curling, and golf and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. In his youth, he was active with the militia. His pet “Prince” will miss the many walks.
Harold is survived by his wife, the former Isabelle Reid; one daughter, Lynn (David) MacIvor, New Glasgow and two sons, Jeffery (fiancee, Bonnie Steele) and John, South Korea, presently at home and two grandchildren, Danielle and Andrew.
There will be visitation on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel, where funeral services will be held Monday, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Willis Henderson officiating.
Donations may be made to the C.B. Regional Hospital Cancer Treatment Center or the SPCA.
William Charles Mackenzie
77, Glace Bay
Charles (Whiskers) MacKenzie 77 of 27 Hay St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Christina (Thompson) MacKenzie. Mr. MacKenzie was an adherent of Warden United Church, Glace Bay. He was employed for 26 years at the Glace Bay, N.S. Liquor Commission outlet, retiring in 1981. He served overseas in the Second World War with the Cape Breton Highlanders in Germany and England. He was a member of the Army Navy and Air Force Club in Glace Bay.
Mr. MacKenzie is survived by his wife, the former Ellen Fitzgerald; daughters Natalie MacDonald (Gary), Glace Bay, Karen (Mrs. Joey Jewells), Glace Bay; grandchildren Victoria, Amber Jewells, Blair MacDonald, Sydney.
Predeceased by brother Robert.
Visitation will be held today (Saturday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service and committal will be held Monday in the Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Garfield Campbell
67, Baddeck
Garfield Campbell, 67, of Baddeck, died Nov. 12, 1999, at home.
Born in Baddeck, Vict. Co., he was the son of the late Thomas and Sadie (MacDonald) Campbell. He was a retired steel worker. He was an employee of the Sydney Steel Corporation and following his retirement, moved to Baddeck. He enjoyed playing softball for many years and fishing with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Donna Campbell; three daughters, Wanda Campbell, Dartmouth, Catherine (Mrs. Peter Hill), Frenchvale, and Valerie (Mrs. Gerald Hill), Westmount; two brothers, Edwin Campbell, Port Bevis, and Lamont Campbell, Cheticamp; one sister Elsie MacRitchie, Baddeck. Also surviving are five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Sadie Campbell.
The body is resting at MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Monday. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Baddeck Gospel Hall with John (Junior) MacDonald and Fred Bartlett officiating. Burial will be in Harbourview Cemetery.
