John Thomas Penney, 70, Halifax, formerly of Sydney. Born March 20, 1929, died Nov. 13, 1999.
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of a dear husband, father and grandfather. We saw you grow tired, we heard you sigh, but all we could do was stand by. God took your hand and we had to part. He eased your pain but broke our hearts.
Tom leaves behind to mourn him, a very loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Alice; only son, Arthur and his wife Donna; daughters, Theresa (Richard) McCarthy, Linda, Brenda (Jack) Schwartz, Dena, Helen (Bruce) Colborne, Kim. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Roxanne, Sheri, Richard, Bernadette, Robert, Kerry, Shane, Megan, Jonathan, Jared, and baby Amanda. Tom was blessed with great-grandchildren, John-Robert, Jeremy, Josh, Dylan, Kayla, Brittany, infant Dawson, Jordan, Austin, Quinton and Sheldon.
He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and friends, brothers, Leo and Vince, sisters, Marg, Jenny, Kay, and Helen.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Obeline, brother, Tom, sister, Theresa and a very special sister, Martha.
Tom had suffered much pain over the last 24 years and fought many battles with death, but he never lost faith and kept fighting. It just got too hard and he got too tired. So he wanted to go Home with the angels. Tom loved life and all it had to offer, he will always be remembered for the great stories he could tell and also the many jokes. He always brought a smile to your face and found the goodness in everyone around him. He loved the outdoors and you would often find him in the park, with his good friend, Ray Davis, on a warm summers day, watching the geese and the squirrels. This world has certainly lost a great man.
There is no visitation by his request. Funeral service in St. Mary’s Cathedral, 10 a m. today, Rev. Walsh officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada.
Graveside prayers will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
