Rev. John Vincent Campbell
82, Antigonish
Rev. John Vincent Campbell, 82, of Antigonish, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at the Bethany Extended Care Facility in Antigonish.
Born in Margaree Forks, Inverness County, he was the son of the late Duncan M. and Helen (MacRae) Campbell. He received his early education in Margaree and graduated from Saint Francis Xavier University with a bachelor of arts degree. Father Campbell was a veteran of the Second World War. After service with the RCAF he received his theological education at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto. He was ordained to the priesthood by Most Rev. J.R. MacDonald at St. Ninian’s Cathedral, May 30, 1953.
Father Campbell’s first appointment was to St. Francis Xavier University where he worked for many years as bursar of the university. He was also very active in the Air Cadet Movement both at the St. F.X. University and at Trenton, Ont. He later served as parish priest at Sacred Heart, Sydney and St. Andrew’s, Judique. During his priestly life Father Campbell was particularly admired for his devotion to and love for parishioners, family and Scottish heritage. He was also a priest strongly committed to the Diocese of Antigonish. He served the Diocese with great distinction as a member of the Council of Priests, chairman of the Diocesan Personnel Board and judge of the Matrimonial Tribunal. Father Campbell also served on the Board of Governors of St. Francis Xavier University.
Father Campbell is survived by two brothers, Dougald (Claire), Outremont, Que. and Mose J., Antigonish.
He was predeceased by brothers, Samuel, Peter, Colin, Joseph; two sisters, Helen (Mrs. Ernie Fahey), Effie (Mrs. Lauchie MacInnis).
The remains will rest at Morrison Hall, St. F.X. University from 10 a.m. Thursday until 6:30 p.m. and then transferred to St. F.X. Chapel in time for a Bible Vigil at 7 p.m. Friday visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Funeral mass will be concelebrated by Bishop Colin Campbell and the priests of the Diocese at 2 p.m. Friday. A reception will follow at Morrison Hall. The remains will then be transferred to St. Andrew’s Church, Judique for visitation Friday 7-9 p.m. Burial Saturday at 10 a.m. St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Judique. The funeral is under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, Pleasant Street, Antigonish.

Anna Murdena MacDonald
85, Sugar Camp, Inverness Co
Anna Murdena MacDonald, 85, of Sugar Camp, Inverness County, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Murdock and Anastasia (Cloake) MacLeod. She was a member of St. Margaret Parish, West Bay Road, The CWL and the Home and School Association.
She survived by two sons, Ed, Queensville and Alex, Port Hawkesbury; two daughters, Joyce (Mrs. John Kennedy), Port Hawkesbury and Elizabeth MacIntyre, Queensville; two foster sons, Allan Proctor, Timberly and Michael MacInnis, Lower Sackville; sister, Naomi MacLean, Coburg Ont., three brothers, Burns MacLeod, Toronto Ont., Wayne MacLeod, Brighton Ont. and Jim MacLeod, Fort McMurray, Alta. Also surviving are 32 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, John E. MacDonald, sons, Malcolm and John in infancy, daughters, Mary MacDonald, Charlotte MacLean and Jean in infancy.
The remains will rest at Green’s Funeral Home, 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury Thursday and Friday from 2 - 9 p.m.
Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, Nov. 20 1999 from St. Margaret Church, West Bay Road with Rev. Peter MacLeod officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society or to St. Margaret Cemetery Fund.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.F. Greene Funeral Services Ltd., Port Hawkesbury.

Teresa Frances Marion
89, Dominion
Teresa Frances Marion, age 89, of 290 Mitchell Ave., Dominion and formerly of Ottawa, passed away Wednesday Nov. 17, 1999, at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay.
Born in Pembroke, Ont., she was the daughter of the late Thomas John and Eva Frances (Denvir) Benkhe.
Surviving are daughters, Shirley MacDonald, Dominion, Judy (Mrs. Bill Merritt), St. Catharines, Ont.; sons, Joseph “Joe”, Ottawa, Frank (Pat), Victoria, B.C. and DonaId (Anne), Bramalea, Ont. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Marion was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Rae, daughters, Beryl and Beverly.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.
Interment will take place at St. Columba’s Parish Cemetery, Pembroke, Ont. at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Donation’s in Teresa’s memory to Seaview Manor are suggested as an expressions of sympathy.

Peter John Zwarun
63, Elma, Washington State
Peter John Zwarun, 63, a forty-eight year resident of Elma, Washington State, died of heart failure Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at his home.
He was born, along with his twin brother, John, to John and Maria (Elaniuk) Zwarun in Glace Bay on Feb. 4, 1936. Brother John died in infancy.
Peter attended St. John’s School in New Aberdeen and left Glace Bay at age 15 with brother Bill. He completed his high school education in Elma. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 at Fort Lewis. Later he took up employment with Simpson Door Co., in McCleary, Washington.
He had been married to Cathy Soucie who predeceased him earlier this year. He retired in 1996 after 41 years service.
Peter was a member of the Elma Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter and member and past president of the Elma Eagles. He enjoyed hunting and always kept some farm animals.
Mr. Zwarun is survived by two daughters, Gerri Lynn Meyer of McCleary and Kristi Zwarun, Brimerton and grandson, Alex Meyer; four brothers, Bill Zwarun of Elma, Mike, Steve and Fred, all of Glace Bay; four sisters, Julia Troicuk and Stephanie Campbell-Byrne, Glace Bay, Mildred Spalding, Royal City, Washington, and Celia Laverdure, Montreal. Peter’s ashes will be interred at St. John’s Parish Cemetery in Glace Bay at the family plot.
Arrangements for a memorial service and interment will be announced at a later date.

Reuben Alfred Ingraham
81, Margaree Valley
Reuben Alfred Ingraham, 81, of Margaree Valley, Inverness County, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Margaree Centre, he was the son of the late Alfred Ingraham and Annie Jane (Phillips) Ingraham. He was a member of Wilson United Church, Margaree Center. He was a veteran of the Second World War.
He is survived by his wife, the former Retta Ross; sons, Ross and his wife Lisette, Margaree Valley; daughter, Rosalynd, Margaree Valley; a very special grandson, Grayson Ingraham, Oxford, N.S.; two brothers, Bevis (Olive), Margaree Center and Fuller (Grace), St. Catharines, Ont.; six sisters, Laura (Mrs. Byron Phillips), Baddeck, Doris (Mrs. Donnie MacDermid), Margaree Valley, Ella Ingraham and Margaret (Mrs. Michael Paturel), Margaree Valley, Alice (Mrs. Jerry Swords), Welland, Ont. and Della Jefferson, River John. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by two brothers, James and Alex.
Visitation is 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday (today) in the Shalom Room, Wilson United Church Hall, Margaree Center. Funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday in Wilson United Church, Margaree Center with Rev. Gordon MacLean officiating. Burial in Congregational Cemetery, Margaree Center.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of N.S.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services Ltd.

Alyce (Dolly) MacEwan
84, Halifax
Alyce (Dolly) MacEwen, 84, of 2564 PopIar St., Halifax, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at home Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, following a struggle with cancer.
Born July 15, 1915, at Long Island, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Robert Charles and Jessie (Price) Drake.
She was a graduate of the Julliard School of Music, New York, and the Ontario Teachers College, Toronto. She was a school teacher and had taught in Cape Breton County during the 1950s and 1960s as well as at Charlottetown, P.E.I., and Toronto. She had lived in Halifax since 1988 and was organist and choir director at Trinity Anglican Church, Halifax, from 1988 to 1998. She was well known for her ability as an organist and a pianist. A devout Christian, her faith was a source of inspiration to all who knew her.
Mrs. MacEwen lived in Sydney with her husband, the late Rev. Horace F. MacEwan, from 1954 to 1968.
She is survived by four daughters, Faith Daley, Eunice H. Moen, and Rebecca MacEwen, all of Halifax, and Martha J. Ide, of Lancaster, Pa., and two sons, Paul, Sydney, and Philip, Toronto. She is also survived by one sister, Emma Kerber, of Long Island, N.Y., and by 16 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Horace, one sister, Jay, and two brothers, Alfred and Bobby.
Her remains will rest at Cruickshank’s Funeral Home, 2032 Robie St., Halifax, with visitation Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 12-2 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 3 p.m., at the funeral home, Rev. Dennis Andrews officiating. The remains will then be taken to Prince Edward Island and will rest at the Church of Scotland, Birch Hill, until 1 p.m. Monday, when a burial service will held, Rev. Ted MacDougall officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery of the Church of Scotland, Birch Hill, P.E.I.

Alexander Joseph MacLeod
79, Wreck Cove
Alexander Joseph (Smokey Joe) MacLeod, 79, of Wreck Cove, Victoria County, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Wreck Cove, he was the son of the late Philip and Margaret (James) MacLeod. He was an adherent of the United Church of Canada, a former employee of the Wreck Cove Power Project and a retired fisherman.
He is survived by nieces, Dorothy MacLean, Baddeck, Elaine MacLeod, Chattam, Ont. and his nephew, Hector MacLeod, Thunder Bay, Ont.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Malcolm, John Alex, Roddie and Norman, sisters, Bessie and Mary and by a brother and sister in childbirth.
Visitation will be in Calvin Presbyterian Church, Wreck Cove today (Friday) 3-9 p.m. Funeral services under the direction of the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be held Saturday 2 p.m. with the Rev. Shirley Murdock officiating. Burial will be in Wreck Cove.
