Alvina Smith
St. Peter's
Alvina F. (Viney, Baw) Smith of St. Peter’s and formerly of Sydney, passed away suddenly Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mae and John MacPherson. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Sydney Y’s Menettes.
Survived by three daughters, Jeannie Spracklin, Sydney, Dana (Leonard) Digout, with whom she resided the past few years, St. Peter’s and Gail (Jim) Copp, Lower Sackville; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Abbie MacDonald, California, Dorothy MacKay, Coxheath and Elaine (Howard) MacKinley, Bedford.
Predeceased by her husband, Wilfred G., daughter, Constance (Don) Stone, son, Alvin, infant son, Graham, two brothers, Earl and Malcolm (Mallie), sisters, Marion MacDonald and Jean Griffith.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel beginning at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Burial to follow at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of your choice.
Raymond A. (Tiny) Collier
58, Bras d’Or
Raymond A. (Tiny) Collier, 58, of 186 Villa Dr., Bras d’Or, passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital, Friday, Nov. 19, 1999.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late William M. and Julia Mae (MacDonald) Collier. Formerly of Tobin Road, until he moved to Bras d’Or in 1973. He was employed on the Great Lakes from 1962 until 1981. Also employed with Devco at the Prince Mine from 1981. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 83, Florence.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary (Betty) Carew; three sons, Harold (Laurie), Toronto, Lawrence, at home, Raymond (Karri Lynn), Florence; three grandchildren, Justin, Brandon and Ryan. Also survived by sisters, Lorraine Schofield, Kentville, Delphine Dove, Sydney Mines; a half-sister, Vivian (Mrs. Gus Walsh), Sydney Mines; brothers, Joe (Anita), Sydney Mines, Donnie (Barbara), Groves Point; half-brothers, Floyd (Marie), North Sydney, Rannie (Maxine) MacDonald, Florence, Robert (Ann) MacDonald, North Sydney. Two aunts, Arthena (Mrs. Gordon Brennan), Florence and Rhoda Shears, U.S.A.
Visitation will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral service will be held Monday 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to C.B. Palliative Care or the Northside General Hospital Foundation.
Isabell Irene Dingwall
76, Sydney
Isabell Irene DingwaIl, 76, of South Bar, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy illness, Friday, Nov. 19, 1999.
Born in Sydney, Isabell was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Louise (Aucoin) Schaump.
She was a member of St. Alphonsus Church and prior to her retirement, worked 36 years for the County of Cape Breton School Board in the maintenance department.
Isabell is survived by her daughter, Mary Helen (Sam) Adams, Coxheath; two sons, Donald, Toronto and David, Ottawa. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Wrobleski, South Bar; two brothers, Donnie, New Victoria and Bernie, P.E.I.; and 10 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Wilfred MacDonald and her second husband, George (Dingy). Isabell was also predeceased by her son, Wilfred Jr. her daughter, Georgina McCabe, and a brother, Michael.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Church on Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Everett McDow officiating, followed by a reception held in the church hall. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Palliative Care of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or the St. Alphonsus’s Church Fund.
James Alan Forsey
50, North Sydney
James Alan Forsey, 50, a resident of 35 Clifford St., North Sydney, passed away in Victoria County.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of Ruth (Amey) Forsey, North Sydney and the late James S. Forsey.
Surviving are one son, Andrew, one daughter, Amanda, both of Hants County; four sisters, Lois (Mrs. Harry Goodwin), Truro, Jean, Halifax, Linda (Mrs. Lloyd Knott), LeHave and Cheryl (Mrs. Paul Belanger), Saint John; two brothers, Gary (Kathy), Sydney and David (Kathy), Halifax.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by one brother, Brian.
There will be no visitation by request. A private family service and burial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice / Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Michaela Burte
5, Ormocto, N.B., Glace Bay
Michaela Patricia Bryanna Burte, age 5, of 14 St. John Ave., Oromocto, N.B., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the IWK Hospital, Halifax, surrounded by her family and friends.
Born in Calgary, Alberta, she was the daughter of Eldon and Florence (MacCuish) Burte. Both parents are former residents of Glace Bay, Eldon from Shepherd’s Lane, and Florence from Hillside Ave.
Michaela was a student at Assinaboine Elementary School and also a member of St. Lukes Church in Oromocto.
She is survived by a sister Alexis, at home, as well as her paternal grandparents George and Jean Burte, Glace Bay, and maternal grandparents Alex and Shirley MacCuish of Glace Bay. She is also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay (849-4505). Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Cremation to follow. Burial will take place in St. John’s Cemetery, Wallace Rd., Glace Bay at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Michaela’s memory may be made to Kidney Research, Spina Bifida or the Mental Health Association.
Louise Marie Head
67, Sydney
Louise Marie Head, 67, of Sydney, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Soinard) Gosse. She was a member of the Salvation Army Community Church and the Home League of the army.
She is survived by her husband Earl; four daughters Earlene Deveaux, Sydney, Debbie (Brian) Edwards, Sydney, Nancy (Darren) Bert, Dartmouth and Karen (Francis) Head, Boisdale; four sons Adam (Sheila), Gander, Nfld., Ron (Christine), Winnipeg, Stephen (Tanya), Sydney and David, Dartmouth; three brothers Stewart, Ont., Redmend (Paulette), Sydney and Hayward (Enid), Ont.; five sisters Doris (John Crane), Sydney, Georgina (Fred) Moore, Ont., Shirley (Carl Deschamps), Ont., Barb (Chuck) Burliegh, Ont. and Sue Sangster, Ont. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by three sisters Frances, Irene and Ann; four brothers Cecil, Jack, Gordon and Bill.
Visitation is on Monday 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral is Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Salvation Army Community Church with Capt. Morris Vincent officiating. Burial at Eastmount Cemetery.

Alfred Hadburg Jessen
73, Halifax
Alfred Hadburg Jessen, 73, of Halifax, formerly of Bridgewater, died Nov. 21, 1999, in Melville Lodge, Halifax.
Born in Denmark, he was the son of the late Peter and Marie (Hadberg) Jessen. Prior to his retirement he was a chartered accountant and a partner with KPMG in Dartmouth and Bridgewater.
He is survived by sons, George and wife Susan, Sydney, Peter, Halifax; brother Ove, Halifax.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ena (Gilroy); brothers, Christian, John; sister Jessie.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Burial will take place in Sydney at a later date.
No flowers by request, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.
