Phyllis Myrtle MacDonald
71, Baddeck
Phyllis Myrtle MacDonald, 71, of Baddeck, passed away Nov. 20, 1999, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
She was the daughter of the late Mary MacKenzie. She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Baddeck. She was employed as a clerk at Stones Drug Store, George’s Dairy, and the Victoria Farmers Co-op until her retirement.
Surviving are sons, Wayne, Baddeck, Graham, Seattle, Wash.; sister, Bertha Farrell, Sydney; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel John MacDonald; brother Roy MacKenzie; grandson Dwayne MacDonald.
Private family visitation Tuesday in MacAskill Funeral Home. Graveside committal service Tuesday in Greenwood Cemetery, Rev. Ian MacLeod officiating.
Donations to any charity.

James Leonard MacDougall

James Leonard MacDougall, born in Reserve Mines, passed away on Nov. 19, 1999, in Glace Bay.
James is survived by his wife, the former Patricia (Turnbell); son Shamus; step-son Jamie; step-daughter Tara, at home. He is also survived by his loving mother Anne (MacIntyre) MacDougall of Glace Bay; four brothers, Frank (Mary), Donkin, Ricky (Brenda), Donkin, Blair (Deane), Glace Bay, and Bruce (Debbie), Glace Bay; two sisters, Lynn (Herb) Underhill, Newcastle, N.B., and Sharon (Adrian) Currie, Glace Bay.
He was predeceased by his father, John MacDougall; brother John (Deacon) MacDougall.
Cremation will take place at a later date under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. There will be a memorial service at St. Ann’s Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating.

Gordon Alexander MacLeod
81, Sydney
Gordon Alexander MacLeod, 81, of 173 George St., Sydney, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Gordon was the best friend and husband of Ruth (MacKenzie) MacLeod. Gordon was born in Glace Bay to the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex Frye and was the adopted son of the late Kenneth and Annie MacLeod of Little Narrows.
Gordon was a devoted and faithful member of the Salvation Army, Sydney. He was particularly involved with the Christmas Kettle Appeal. He represented the Army as well, as he stood by the Christmas Kettle for many years at the Zellers Mall in Sydney. In his earlier years, Gordon served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a devoted employee with C.N., Sydney, for nearly twenty years. Following his retirement from C.N. he worked for Sid’s Furniture Store.
Gordon is survived by his wife Ruth; sister, Margaret, Little Narrows; step-brothers and step-sisters, nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
Predeceased by a brother Raymond, Dominion.
Visitation was held on Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel where services will be held Monday (today) at 2 p.m. with Capt. Morris Vincent officiating. Burial at Little Narrows Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church or Little Narrows Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund.

Alvina F. Smith
St. Peter's
Alvina F. (Viney, Baw) Smith of St. Peter’s and formerly of Sydney, passed away suddenly Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mae and John MacPherson. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Sydney Y’s Menettes.
Survived by three daughters, Jeannie Spracklin, Sydney, Dana (Leonard) Digout, with whom she resided the past few years, St. Peter’s, and Gail (Jim) Copp, Lower Sackville; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Abbie MacDonald, California, Dorothy MacKay, Coxheath, and Elaine (Howard) MacKinley, Bedford.
Predeceased by her husband, Wilfred G., daughter, Constance (Don) Stone, son, Alvin, infant son, Graham, two brothers, Earl and Malcolm (Mallie), sisters, Marion MacDonald and Jean Griffith.
Visitation was held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel beginning at 11 a.m. today (Monday) with the Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Burial to follow at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of your choice.

William Anthony Thomas
85, Port Hawkesbury
William Anthony Thomas, 85, of Port Hawkesbury, passed away Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
Born in Soldiers Cove, Richmond County, he was the son of the late Daniel Joseph and Mary Ann (Gillis) Thomas. He was a member of Saint Joseph Parish, Port Hawkesbury, and retired manager of the Port Hawkesbury Arena.
He is survived by one brother Michael, Sydney; four sisters, Anna, Sadie, Evelyn and Patsy, all at home, and Helen (Burkie) Cloake, Port Hawkesbury. One niece Frances (Albert) Warner, Port Hawkesbury; two nephews, Danny (Judy) Thomas, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Gillis (Wanda) Cloake, Troy. Several grand-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by niece Tara Cloake and sister-in-law Marion Thomas.
The remains will rest at the family residence, 8 J.D. MacLean Crescent, Port Hawkesbury, Monday, Nov. 22, from 2-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, from Saint Joseph Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Burial in the Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pro-Life Alzheimer Society or the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.F. Greene Funeral Services Ltd., 507 Bernard Street, Port Hawkesbury.

Eileen Elizabeth Lee (nee Bryden)
55, Glace Bay
Eileen Elizabeth Lee (nee Bryden), 55, of 12 Costley St., Glace Bay. It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a dearly loved wife, mother, sister and grandmother on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, in Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, Eileen was the daughter of the late Joseph and Kay (MacMullin) Bryden of Reserve Mines. Eileen was predeceased by one brother, Kevin.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur Lee; son, Stephen, California and daughter, Trina, Halifax; stepsons, Alex (Delores) Lee, Glace Bay and Bernie (Allison) Lee, Glace Bay; stepdaughters, Edna (Van) Budden, Reserve Mines and Raylene, Glace Bay. Also surviving is special sister, Georgina (Boo) McKenzie (Kenneth), Reserve Mines; brothers, Joey (Helen), New Waterford, Jimmy (Jennie), Glace Bay, Cyril, Glace Bay, Melvin (Brenda), Reserve Mines, George (Tiny) and wife Pat, Windsor, Ont.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Eileen had a ‘heart of gold’, always worrying about others, willing to lend a hand whenever she was needed. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband ‘Buddy’.
Eileen was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.
There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay (849-4505). Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, Thursday at 10 a.m. officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund in Eileen’s memory.

Ralph MacLeod
74, Dartmouth
Ralph Holmes MacLeod, 74, Waverley Road, Dartmouth, passed away Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, in Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fla., as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in Sydney, Ralph was a son of the late Donald and Christine (MacDonald) MacLeod. He earned his undergraduate degree at Mount Allison University, Sackville, N.B. and then his mechanical engineering degree at the Nova Scotia Technical College. He served in the Canadian Army for many years where he attained the rank of major. He then taught at the Dartmouth Regional Vocational School until his retirement. Ralph enjoyed the simple things in life, working in his garden, canoeing and swimming, but most of all he enjoyed being with his family and friends.
He will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Irene (MacKinnon); sons, Brian (Dianne), Halifax, Grant (Connie), London, Ont.; sisters, Mrs. Norma Spencer, Bedford, Eileen (Howard) Clark, North Sydney; brothers, Carmen MacLeod, Sydney, Blair MacLeod, Trout Brook; many nieces and nephews.
The body has been cremated with a memorial service to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or OXFAM -Canada.
