William C. (Skoockie) Targett
68, North Sydney
William Clarence Targett, 68, of Tobin Road, North Sydney, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late William and Ena Targett.
He was employed as a coal miner with Devco for 33 years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 008, Sydney Mines. He was an avid baseball player all of his life. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are five daughters, Tanya (Mrs. Herbie Ford), Lori (Mrs. Earl Collier), both of Sydney Mines, Wendy (Mrs. Jim Leyte), Cindy (Mrs. Gerard Holic), Vangi (Mrs. Billy York), all of North Sydney; four sons, John “Frenchy” (Sharon), Brian “Rocky” (Cavell), both of Sydney Mines, Kevin (Donna), North Sydney and Stephen “Yogi”, Kitchener, Ont.; one sister, Helen (Mrs. Gordon Grant), Englishtown; special daughter-in-law, Cecilia Holic, North Sydney; 30 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, the former Annie Francis (Serafinus) Targett, one son, one daughter in infancy and one brother, Bobby Targett.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Memorial mass will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Piva officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
William Frederick (Freddy) Flynn
61, Glace Bay
William Frederick (Freddy) Flynn, 61, of Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at home.
He was the son of Emily (McPherson) and the late William Frederick Flynn.
Freddy worked as a chain runner in the coal mine before retiring and he was an avid skater. Freddy also enjoyed telling jokes and making home movies.
Freddy is survived by his wife, the former Olga (Parsons) Flynn; daughter, Patricia (Patsy) (Berrie) LeBlanc, Glace Bay; sons, Dan (Christine), Donkin and Martin (Mark), Brantford, Ont.; brothers, Joe (Helen), Kentville, Earl and Darrell (Eileen), both of Glace Bay and grandchildren, Jonathan, Brianna LeBlanc and Danielle Flynn.
Freddy was predeceased by his father, William (Frederick) Flynn and brother, John Francis.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, from 2:30-4:30 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be held Friday, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m. in St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Daniel James (Teddy) MacIver
Evanston
Daniel James (Teddy) MacIver, 58, of Evanston, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Daniel James and Helen Rita (Bond) MacIver.
He was a founding manager of the Port Hawkesbury Co-op. He was a longtime employee of Stora-Enso; a longtime member and parishioner of the Causeway Pentecostal Church, Port Hawkesbury. He served the Boy Scouts of Canada. He was a board member of the Strait Area Credit Union, Port Hawkesbury; a former board member of Port Hawkesbury Co-Op and a member of Gideons International.
He is survived by his wife, the former Georgina Thorne; daughters, Janice Onotsky (Michael), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont., Cheryl Smith (Robert), Lake Ainslie; sons, Glenn and fiancée Kim MacKenzie, Queensville, Grant, Port Hastings; sisters, Penny Parsons (Bob) and Joy MacInnis, both of Sydney; brothers, Lorway (Mac) (Lise), Windsor; aunt, Margaret Rhind, Dartmouth; numerous nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Anita, Joseph and Jacob.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the Causeway Pentecostal Church, Pastor Burt Hooper officiating assisted by Pastor Donald Conrad.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Gideons International.

Clarence MacKinnon McDonald
98, Glace Bay
Clarence MacKinnon McDonald, 98, of Glace Bay, passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, in Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay.
He was born in Halifax, son of the late Charles F. and Elma (Murdock) McDonald. He served in the Armed Forces during the latter years of the Second World War. He was a piano technician in Cape Breton for many years of tuning and refinishing pianos. He was an elder of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church and a member of the choir.
He is survived by his wife, Adele (Ulmer) McDonald; sister, Isabel Layton, Truro; daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Nelson McDonald), Glace Bay, Corinne, Toronto, daughter-in-law, Alice, Brussels, Belgium; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Robert F., brothers, Gordon, Frank and Malcolm and sister, Jean.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999 from 2:30-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Reception will follow in the church.

Daniel James "B" Robertson
Sydney Mines
Daniel James “B” Robertson, of 18 View St., Sydney Mines, died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital in his 91st year.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Ariel and Mary (MacInnis) Robertson of Cranberry.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. A long time member of Branch 8, Royal Canadian Legion, Sydney Mines. He was instrumental in the construction and operation of the Shore Battery Gun Emplacements at Clarke’s Point, Lockman’s and Cranberry. He was retired for the past 30 years from Old Sydney Collieries and Devco.
He is survived by Margaret (MacPhee), his wife of 60 years; his daughters, Mary, Halifax and Pauline, at home and his son, Donnie (Beverley), Kanata, Ont. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Doug St. Laurent, Bridgewater and Danielle St. Laurent, Henri, Port Williams, N.S.; five great-grandchildren and a brother, Ariel, Connecticut.
He was predeceased by his brother, John Duncan and his sister, Anne Pederson.
Visitation Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

James Francis (Sizzler) MacDonald
68, Glace Bay
James Francis (Sizzler) MacDonald, 86, of Taigh Na Mara, Main Street, Glace Bay and a former resident of Connaught Avenue, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at the home.
Born in Dominion, he was a son of the late Alexander R. and Lucy (Dunn) MacDonald.
He was a veteran of the Second World War. He retired from the Devco coal mines and was a former member of St. John’s Parish.
He is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Mrs. Joseph Ellsworth), Dominion, Debbie (Mrs. Al Esterbrook), Halifax; one son, Joseph (Linda), Ontario; one sister, Christina MacDonald, Dominion and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Alice Campbell, five sisters, Margaret Jane, Mary Margaret, Mary, Nora and May; two brothers, Ronald and Alex.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery.
Ronald Martell
79, St. Peter's
Ronald Murdock Martell, 79, of St. Peter’s, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston.
Born in Rockdale, N.S., he was the son of the late Patrick and Henrietta (Martell) Martell.
Ronald was a veteran the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 47.
Ronald is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Anna (Nan) and loving father to seven children, Ronald Jr., Barry, Eric, all of Lunenberg County, Paul, Riverview, N.B., Gerry, Owen Sound, Ont., Kathy, Halifax and Cindy, St. Peter’s. Ronald is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and by five brothers and four sisters.
By request of the family there will be no visitation. The memorial service will be held in St. Peter’s Catholic Church Saturday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Reception will follow at the St. Peter’s fire hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the W.B. Kingston Memorial Clinic L’Ardoise.
