Carl Gilbert Reid
69, Glace Bay
Carl G. Reid, 69, of 46 Fourth St., Glace Bay, passed away suddenly Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Blanche Young, Carl was and adherent of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, and a former employee with the Cape Breton Development Corp. working in No. 20 and No 26 collieries, until his retirement in 1981.
Mr. Reid was a member of Ring 73, and a member of the Boxing Club and also the Friday Night Mixed Dart League at Ring 73, and Carl was a friend to everyone.
Carl is survived by his first wife, Anne Fillmore, Glace Bay and by his fiancee, Irene Lynk, Glace Bay; daughters, Ann Marie Morrison, Gail (Gene), Marion McInnis, all of Glace Bay; sons, Robert (Lois), Glace Bay, Earl (Roxanne), Dominion, Harry (Camielle), Glace Bay, Kenny (Tammy), Glace Bay, Eric and Jamie, Toronto, Ont.; sister, Darlene Trapp, Glace Bay; brother, John Reid; stepbrother, Aubry; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Predeceased by his second wife, Dolina Reid, two sons, Carl and Michael, one grandchild, Joelle.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Road.

Thomas Joseph Wilcox Jr.
45, Glace Bay
Thomas Joseph Wilcox Jr, 45, of 40 Bay St., Glace Bay, went to his heavenly rest Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his devoted family.
Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of Tom and Alice (Bates) Wilcox. He was a member of St. Anne’s Parish.
He was employed as a supervisor by C.B. Development Corp., working in the No. 26, Lingan, Phalen and Prince collieries. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Mine Rescue Association. In 1993 he received the Canadian Medal of Bravery for his efforts during the Westray Mining Disaster.
Tom was a known leader in mine rescue having been a dedicated member of many successful provincial, national and international competitions.
On becoming a member in 1980, Tom was an integral part of the Glace Bay Volunteer Fire Department. He devoted tireless hours to the department and held many positions such as assistant secretary, assistant treasurer, lieutenant and captain of various companies, assistant deputy chief and at the time of his death held the position of deputy chief. He was also a member of the C.B. Firefighters Fraternal Association, a member of the C.B. Regional Firechiefs Association and a member of the Maritime Firechiefs Association. Also sat on many committees for the regional fire service.
He was also a devoted member of the department dive team and was involved with many committees and all aspects of the department.
His hobbies consisted of hunting, golfing, baseball, hockey and scuba diving.
Besides his parents, he leaves behind to mourn his loss his loving wife, Belinda (Croney); one son, Terry and wife, Nicole; daughters, Sherisse and Amy, at home; two precious granddaughters, Emilie and Hannah. Also surviving are two sisters, Rita (Mrs. Ronald McNeil), Kingston, Shauna, Glace Bay; brothers, John (Pat), Keith (Anne), Glace Bay. Tom will also be sadly missed by his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will take place Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass to be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Main Street, Glace Bay. Interment at Forest Haven.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation (proceeds to Palliative Care).
Jane Bowers
1924-1999
In loving memory of Jane Hillier Bowers who is remembered for her kindness, wit and dedication; her love of life and family will always be in our memory.
Jane died at home in River Bourgeois on Friday, Dec. 3, 1999. She was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 47, Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband Edward Bowers; two daughters, Shirley and husband (Chris) Charron and Sandra and husband Ritchard Billard; three grandchildren, Christopher and Samantha Charron and Natalie Gillard; two great-grandchildren Colton and Hailey. Also survived by one brother, Bob Hillier.
She was predeceased by one sister, Blanche and two brothers, Reg and Harold Hillier.
Visitation will be at the River Bourgeois Funeral Home Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. in the River Bourgeois Funeral Home with Archdeacon Peter MacRae officiating. A second memorial service will be held in Dartmouth at a date to be announced later.
Arrangements are under the direction of Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Edna Mary Faccone
96, Sydney
Edna Mary (Daye) Faccone, 96, of MacGillivary Guest Home and formerly of Glace Bay, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Asnath (Simmons) Pyke.
She was a former member of Epworth United Church, Glace Bay.
She is survived by one daughter, Marjorie Butts, Sydney; three grandchildren, Fern and Paul Butts and Karen (Tammy) Garnier, all of Sydney; four great-granddaughters; two stepdaughters, Mary A. Faccone, Maryland and Darlene Faccone, San Bernardino, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Melvin Daye of Glace Bay in 1954 and her second husband, Joseph Faccone, San Bernardino, Calif. in 1965, one great-grandson, James in infancy, two sisters, Marjorie Strong, Yarmouth and Lillian Rateau, Santa Barbara, Calif.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Sharon Irving officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
Grace Edith (Avery) Fergusson
84, Glace Bay
Grace Edith (Avery) Fergusson, 84, of Taigh Na Mara and formerly of 95 Catherine St., Glace Bay, died Saturday Dec. 4, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late William Alfred and Loisa Susan (Clynick) Avery.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay and a member of the Glace Garden Club.
Grace is survived by her son, William Norman (Sally) Fergusson; granddaughters, Mary Ellen and Sarah Campbell, Windsor, N.S.; sister, Doris Walker and family, Montreal.
Grace was predeceased by her husband, Neil Layton Fergusson.
Their will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private committal service will take place at a later date in Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Mary (Melnick) Gouthro
78, Glace Bay
Mary (Melnick) Gouthro, 78, a long time resident of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, in the QE II Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Annie Melnick.
While residing in Glace Bay, she was a member of St. Anthony’s Church. Lovingly remembered by her family.
Mrs. Gouthro is survived by her daughters, Michele (Gouthro) Kennedy (husband Glenn), Lower Sackville, N.S. and Paula (Gouthro) Butler (husband Shawn), Leaf Rapids, Man.; sons, Kenneth Jamieson (wife Sandra), Dartmouth, N.S., John Jamieson (wife Dorcus), Prince Rupert, B.C. and Gary Jamieson, Gagetown, N.B. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth Jamieson and second husband, Michael Gouthro, daughter, Carol Ann Jamieson, brothers, Harry, John, Peter, Steve and Mike Melnick and sister, Catherine MacDonald.
There will be no visitation. In celebration of her life a memorial service will be held at St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay, Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Services under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home.
