Frederick M. (Fred) Gregor
84, New Waterford
Frederick M. (Fred) Gregor, 84, of 343 12th St., New Waterford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Jean and Fred Gregor.
Fred was a member of Calvin United Church. He retired from employment at A. Schwartz and Co. after 28 years. He operated various businesses in New Waterford, most notably the Paramount Theatre. Fred was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 15, New Waterford.
He served our country during the Second World War overseas as a member of both the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Air Force.
Mr. Gregor is survived by his wife, Katie (Dickson); one son, Robert and his wife, Willena and two grandchildren he truly loved, Kristen and Matthew, the lights of his life. He is also survived by his brother, Harry (Marg), North Sydney; two sisters, Ruth (Mrs. Frank Kelly), Bras d’Or and Shirley (Mrs. Andrew Harvey), New Waterford and one aunt, Ellen Gregor; several nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Vera MacDonald and Doris Robinson.
His two main hobbies were gardening and jazz music although he appreciated all styles of music.
Visitation was held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, at V.J. McGillivray’s Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
The remains will be transferred to Calvin United Church at 12 noon Monday (today) for the funeral service at 2 p.m., with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
His quiet love will always be remembered.
Annie MacNeil
Scotchtown
Annie MacNeil of 26 King St., Scotchtown, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Rumania on Nov. 26, 1906, she moved to Glace Bay, N.S. as a young girl in 1909 with her parents the late Michael and Maria (Buzanar) Colson and she later moved to New Waterford in 1927.
She was a member of the St. Michael’s Parish, River Ryan, was actively involved with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15, New Waterford for a number of years and was also involved with various charity groups.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Thomas, Glace Bay. Also six grandchildren, two lived with her as children, Frances (Barbe) Lamothe, Victoria Mines, N.S. and Michael Barbe, Whitby, Ont.; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Nellie Mosley, Panama City Beach, Fla., Helen Poole, Levittown, Pa. and a brother, John Colson, Amherst, N.S.
Predeceased by husband, Neil J. MacNeil, daughter, Patsy MacNeil, sister, Egdell Flemming and brothers, Peter, Michael (Mickey), William (Kayo), Alex, Joseph (Joey) and Aloysius (Allie).
Visitation will take place Monday (today) in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, River Ryan. Burial in St. Michael Cemetery, River Ryan.
Beatrice Elma MacPherson
Sydney
The death of Beatrice Elma MacPherson, of Cottage Road, Sydney, occurred Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the youngest daughter of the late Herbert and Janet (Rood) Ripley.
She was a lifetime member of First United Church and in former years sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was involved in many aspects of the church. She taught school in Coxheath, Ashby, Colby and Woodill.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon; daughter, Barbara Larade and son-in-law Francis; son, Kent and daughter-in-law Stella; two grandchildren, Kent and Leah; four sisters, Edna, Ethel, Hazel and Edith.
She was predeceased by one sister, Zeta Anderson, two brothers, Laun and Lewis.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in First United Church Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
John T. (Jack) Sinyard
86, North Sydney
John T. Sinyard, age 86, of 49 Prince St., North Sydney, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, in North Sydney.
Born in Marystown, Nfld., he was a son of the late Pius and Lucy Sinyard.
He worked as a fisherman for most of his life. He served with the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 19, North Sydney. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are a sister, Katie, Marystown, Nfld., two brothers, Ambrose and Alphonse (Sheila), all of Parker’s Cove, Nfld.; a special friend, Chesley Moore, North Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by two sisters, Irene and Mary.
Visitation Tuesday morning 8:30 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass to follow 10 a.m. Tuesday from St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the C.B. District Veterans Hospital Comfort Fund.
William John (Johnny) Wilson Thistle
Loch Lomond
William John (Johnny) Wilson Thistle, of 941 Salem Rd., Loch Lomond, Cape Breton, N.S. and a former resident of Mahon Street, New Waterford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his farm in Loch Lomond.
He was an adherent of the Salvation Army Citadel, New Waterford. He worked in Nos. 16, 14 and 12 collieries until his retirement in 1971. He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and darts. He loved to sing old songs and was partial to Cape Breton and Newfoundland music.
He will be sadly missed by daughters, Elaine (David) Digweed, St. Ann’s, Ont., Elizabeth Hutchinson, Halifax, Anne (Peter) Hylands, Fall River, Raylene Walker, Ottawa, Jessie Sandford, Bedford, Lez Lee (Weymond), Brookfield, Glenda (Ron) Thistle, Petitcodiac, N.B.; sons, Frank (Gina), Inuvik, N.W.T., John “Skip” (Sheryl), Porters Lake, N.S., Stephen, Sydney, Timothy, Howie Center; two brothers, Edward (Pauline), New Waterford and Raymond (Debbie), New Glasgow; 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Florence Mae Hutchinson, two daughters, Kimberley Joy and Marilyn Geddes, sister, Mary Gledhill and brother, Frank.

No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to be held Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Salvation Army Citadel, King Street, New Waterford at 2 p.m. with Lieut. Wilson Sutton officiating. Interment in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Family will receive relatives and friends at the Salvation Army Citadel Hall following the interment.

Robert William (Bobby) Tubrett
62, Sydney
Mr. Robert William (Bobby) Tubrett, age 62, of 520 St. Peters Rd., Sydney, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney after a lengthy illness.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Joe and Gert Tubrett. Bobby was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier, and was a plumber by trade, being employed at Centre 200 prior to his illness. He was a very fine athlete and excelled in baseball and hockey.
A beloved husband to his wife, Dawn (Hillman); he was a devote father and grandfather.
He is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Henry Poswiata), Antigonish, Tracey (Thomas), Sydney; and son, Glen, Sydney; grandchildren, Melissa, Megan, Mitchell, Rachel, Christopher, and Logan. He is also survived by brothers Eddie (Ann), Lunenberg, Sonny (Carmel), Sydney, Earle (Margie), Dartmouth; sisters, Helen (Gerald) Aucoin, Dartmouth, Peggy Keough, Westmount and sister-in-law, Theresa.
He was predeceased by his infant son, Robert and his brother, Gorman.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Lung Association.

W. John Worton
64, Christmas Island
W. John Worton, of Christmas Island, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999.
Born in England, he worked for 25 years with Air Canada, as a Flight Operations Ground Training Manager. He had been enjoying his retirement in Christmas Island for the past eight years.
He will be very sadly missed by his loving wife, Jane; his daughters, Theresa Worton-Cerny (Vlastik) and Maria Worton (Dimitri Soukonnov); and his adored grandchildren, Victor and Emily, as well as his many friends.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held today (Monday), Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney, with Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating.
Donations may be to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
