Grace Edith (Avery) Fergusson
84, Glace Bay
Grace Edith (Avery) Fergusson, 84, of Taigh Na Mara and formerly of 95 Catherine St., Glace Bay, died Saturday Dec. 4, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late William Alfred and Loisa Susan (Clynick) Avery.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay and a member of the Glace Garden Club.
Grace is survived by her son, William Norman (Sally) Fergusson; granddaughters, Mary Ellen and Sarah Campbell, Windsor, N.S.; sister, Doris Walker and family, Montreal.
Grace was predeceased by her husband, Neil Layton Fergusson.
Their will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private committal service will take place at a later date in Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Rev. Alex MacDonald, John MacDonald
Whycocomagh
Rev. Alex MacDonald and his brother John, sons of the late Duncan and Cassie MacDonald of Whycocomagh are survived by three brothers, Malcolm, Alfred, Toronto and Neil A., Whycocomagh; two sisters Kaye (Earl) Hussey and Margaret (Norman) MacPherson, Marion Bridge.
Paul William McNeil
32, Reserve Mines
Paul William McNeil, 32, of Reserve Mines, died peacefully, Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at the QEII Hospital, Halifax, surrounded by his caring and loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, Dec. 24, 1966, he was the son of David and Helen (Finlayson) McNeil.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines. He graduated from Reserve District High in 1985 and from St. Mary’s University, Halifax in 1989 with a bachelor of commerce degree. At the time of his death, he was living in Halifax and was employed with Revenue Canada. Paul was actively involved in both baseball and hockey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly (Gouthro) McNeil; his four-year-old son, Brett; also brothers, Sandy (Kelly), New Brunswick, Jerry (Jacqueline), Florida and Adam, Alberta; sisters, Ann Marie (Mrs. Wayne Lerette), Halifax, Peggy (Mrs. Rob Russell), Whitehorse and Erin (Shane), Halifax.
Visitation will be at Curry’s Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Wednesday, Dec. 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, Thursday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. Donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
On Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999 a memorial mass in Paul’s memory will be held at the Canadian Martyrs Church, 5900 Inglis St., Halifax, 10 a.m. with Rev. James Hayes officiating.
Johna Hurley Snow
54, Glace Bay
Mrs. Johna Snow, 54, of 14 Churchill Center, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully with her loving daughter, Shana and devoted brother, Tony by her side at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Johna was born in Glace Bay, daughter of the late John and Hazel Hurley.
She attended St. John’s and St. Michael’s schools in Glace Bay and was a graduate of the Cape Breton Business College. Following graduation she was employed as secretary with the civil service in Windsor Park Halifax. She resided for many years in New Brunswick and Germany before returning to Glace Bay in 1997.
Johna is survived by two loving daughters, Tonia Smith, of the United States and Shana, at home and a brother, Tony, with whom she resided in Glace Bay.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother Maurice.
In accordance with Johna’s wishes, the body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical School. A memorial service will be held in St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen, Glace Bay with a date to be announced.
Thomas Swatko
77, Sydney
Thomas Swatko, 77, of Sydney passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 6, 1999 with family at his side.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Harry and Olena Swatko.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Riley); sisters, Ann Rudy, Toronto, Mary Stan, Foam Lake, Sask., Katherine Lowther, Sydney.
Tom is survived by his sisters, Josephine Mayich, Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Parish, Sydney. He was a founding member of The Ukrainian Men’s Club and a member of the Holy Ghost Choir. He was a retired employee of Sydney & Whitney Pier Bus Company. He spent his retirement years making violins, chime clocks and spending time with his many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Wednesday, Dec. 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass will be held Thursday at Holy Ghost Church, 11 a.m. with Fr. Rudnik officiating. Burial will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Children’s Wish Foundation would be appreciated.
Sonia Andrusyszyn
88, Sydney
Sonia Andrusyszyn, 88, Henry Street, Sydney, passed away at the Breton Bay Nursing Home on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999.
Born in Romania, Sonia was the daughter of the late Joseph and Antonina Hobart. In 1919, she immigrated to Canada and resided in Montreal before moving to Sydney.
She was a member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Parish.
Sonia is survived by her daughter, Helen Fitzgerald, New Waterford, grandson Stephen Kudchyk, Sydney and her great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Harry Kudchyk, and her second husband, Stephen Andrusyszyn in 1985.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church, Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Peter Rudnik officiating. Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Harry Gordon Carmichael
Sydney
Harry Gordon Carmichael, of Sydney, died peacefully at the home of this sister, Marjorie Smith, Porters Lake with the family at his side, on Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, following a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 49.
Born in Baddeck, dearly loved son of Mrs. Muriel (Long) Carmichael and the late Harry Carmichael.
Lovingly remembered by his sisters, Marjorie (Alan) Smith, Porters Lake, Lois Boivin, Bedford, Ann Larivee, Ottawa, Erma (Matt) Kirves, Victoria; brother, Paul (Simone) Carmichael, Baddeck; nieces, Jennifer, Angelica, Julie; nephews, Steven, Shaun, Christopher, Matthew.
Gordon was a certified general accountant and employed by Revenue Canada. He will be fondly remembered for the pleasure he brought to family and friends, through his singing and love of music.
No visitation. Funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. in J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 1234 Cole Harbour Rd., Dartmouth with Fred Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in Southside Baddeck Cemetery.
