Everett Stanford Corkum
92, Pugwash
Everett Stanford Corkum, 92, of Pugwash, passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash.
Born in Port Bickerton, he was a son of the late Norman and Olive (Kaiser) Corkum. He was a fisherman and a carpenter by trade and worked at National Sea Products, Louisbourg until his retirement. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are daughters, Ramona MacLeod and husband Harvey, Catalone, Doris Burke, Port Bickerton, Marjorie Elliott and husband Alvin, Pugwash; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Lucy Hiltz and a number of brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday, both in Mundle’s Funeral Home, Pugwash, Evangelists William Bingham and Ken Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, or a charity of choice.
Christine Elizabeth Royal
54, Reserve Mines
Christene Elizabeth Royal, 54, of 23 Munroe St., Reserve Mines, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the former Jean Elizabeth Somers and the late James Forbes Matheson.
She was a member of Gordon United Church, Reserve Mines. Christene enjoyed baking. Her family and friends meant everything to her.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Walter; daughter, Terri-Lynn (Mrs. John Thomas), Moncton, N.B.; sons, Forbes “Rusty” (Tanya), Glace Bay and Mark, at home; sisters, Madeline Matheson (Bill Doucette) and Marion Matheson (Stephen), both of Ottawa, Verona (Mrs. Fred Simmons), Reserve Mines and Elizabeth Anne (Butch) George, Lower Sackville. Also surviving is a special nephew, Brian Rideout.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Royal will be held today (Wednesday), Dec. 8, 1999, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Gordon United Church, Reserve Mines with Rev. Dave MacLean officiating. Cremation will follow. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Christene’s memory to Cape Breton Palliative Care are suggested as an expression of sympathy.

The memorial service for the late Johna (Hurley) Snow, of 14 Churchill Center, Glace Bay, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen with the Rev. Paul MacGillivray officiating.
Lloyd Albert Willett
Glace Bay
Lloyd Albert Willett, of 34 Highland St., Glace Bay, formerly of 12 MacKenzie St., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, South Street, following a brief illness.
Born in Glace Bay on Aug. 8, 1915, he was a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (MacGillivary) Willett.
Lloyd was an adherent of St. Mary’s Anglican Church and a former lifetime employee of Canada Customs, Glace Bay and Sydney.
Lloyd was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941-1945 and a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 3, Glace Bay. For a number of years Mr. Willett was an active member and leader in the Boy Scout movement.
Lloyd is survived by his loving wife, the former Margaret Matheson; son, David (wife Audrey); daughter, Mary (Mrs. Ian Mercer); three granddaughters, two grandsons and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mae (Mrs. George Tucker), all of Glace Bay and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Olive (Mrs. Rev. Don Colwell), brothers, Rev. Joseph Willett and Cecil.
Visitation for the late Mr. Willett will be held today (Wednesday), Dec. 8, 1999, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Helen Louise (Nellie) Beaver
96, Glace Bay
Helen Louise (Nellie) Beaver, 96, formerly of 721 Minto St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at Victoria Haven Nursing Home.
Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary McLean.
She was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. Nellie was a nursing assistant at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the General Hospital Annex. She was an active member in her community and had helped many people during her long life.
Nellie is survived by her daughter-in-law, Marie, granddaughter, Viriginea and great-grandson, Daniel, all of Waterloo, Ont., great-granddaughter, Robin Ashton and great-great-granddaughter, Emma Ashton, London, Ont., and special friend, Stephanie Campbell Byrne.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one son, Richard, one daughter, Cecelia in infancy and two brothers.
Visitation for the late Nellie Beaver will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Saint John’s Church with Fr. Paul MacGillivray officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Derrick Joseph Dixon
31, Glace Bay.
Derrick Joseph Dixon, 31, of 186 Reserve St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Stewart and Thelma (Tucker) Dixon.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Derrick was very mechanically inclined, he loved big trucks. He will leave behind all his family and so many great C.B. Radio friends that he met.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Lang; and his pride and joy, his son, Gordon Joseph.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Dixon. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be celebrated Monday, Dec. 13, 1999 at 2 p.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Minnie Margaret MacRitchie
79, Goose Cove
Minnie Margaret MacRitchie, 79, of Goose Cove, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in West Alba, Inverness County, she was the daughter of the late Hector and Julia (Kennedy) MacLeod.
She was a member of Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary (Jack) MacDonald, Tarbot; three grandchildren, Cindy (Charles) MacRae, Baddeck, Janet (Glenn) Dauphney and Glen MacDonald, both of Tarbot and two great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Amanda; three nephews, Jimmy, Hector and Lorrie Williams.
She was predeceased by her husband, Murdock George (MG) MacRitchie and a sister, Ruth Williams.
The body is resting at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River, with visitation today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held Friday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Shirley Murdock and the Rev. Robert Reid officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victoria County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
