John James Gillis
95, Baddeck
John James Gillis, 95, Baddeck, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at home.
Born in River Bennett, Victoria County., he was the son of the late Duncan and Grace (Buchanan) Gillis.
He operated a sawmill and woods operation, trucking and construction business and had his first truck before the war. After retiring from the family business, he worked for many years as superintendent of Public Works for the Village of Baddeck. He also served several terms as a village commissioner. He then cut and delivered hardwood for 12 years until the age of 87. He continued to help his famiIy members with house, property and business matters well into his 90s.
Surviving are his wife, the former Doris M. Sanford; sons, Gordon (Vera), Lower Sackville, Duncan (Beth), Baddeck, Alastair (Karen), Lower Sackville, Raymond (Carol) McLean, North Reading, Mass.; daughters, Marilyn (Ed) Dwyer, Baddeck, Elinor (Archie) MacDonald, Westmount, Nancy (Bob) Smith, North Delta, B.C., Marjorie (Mike) Soares, Rocky Bay, Richmond County; sister, Margaret MacLean, Arnprior, Ont.; 35 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers, Willie, Alexander and Lloyd, sister, Helen Buchanan, son, John Freeman (Jackie), daughter, Anne (Gillis) Lamey, grandsons, Harry MacDonald Jr. and John (Jackie) MacDonald, great-grandson, Andrew MacDonaId-Gatto.
The body is resting in MacAskill Funeral Home with visitation Saturday, Dec. 11 from 2-9 p.m. Funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12 in the Greenwood United Church, Baddeck, Rev. David Lutes and Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating. Burial will be in Harbour View Cemetery, St. Ann’s.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew’s United Church, Baddeck Forks, Greenwood United Church, Baddeck or a charity of your choice.
Catherine Cameron
88, Sydney
Catherine Cameron, 88, of 1249 George St., Sydney, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Georges River, she was the daughter of the late William and Annie (Young) Almon. She was a member of Immaculate Heart Parish, Mira Road.
She is survived by three daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Brian Gallivan), Patricia (Mrs. Charles Richardson), both of Sydney, and Gladys (Mrs. Richard Dinn), British Columbia; three sons, Jack, Halifax, Russell, Montreal and Frank, Toronto; two sisters, Emmaline Gallant, Toronto and Grace Almon, North Sydney; and one brother, Fred, Georges River. Also survived by several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Murphy and by her second husband, John A. Cameron; son, Arthur Murphy Jr.; sisters, Margaret, Mary, Eliza, Pauline; brothers, Frank, Boyd, Joseph and James.
The late Mrs. Cameron will have visitation Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 775 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Monday 11 a.m. in Immaculate Heart Church, Mira Road with Fr. Gary MacPherson officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

William Howard Curtis
87, Neil's Harbour
William Curtis, 87, of the Highland Manor, Neil’s Harbour, formerly of Ingonish Beach, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the manor.
Born at Ingonish Beach, he was the son of the late Rupert and Elizabeth (MacIntosh) Curtis. He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Ingonish Beach. Willie was a retired employee of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
He is survived by one son, Bill (Susan), Halifax; two sisters, Daisy MacPherson, Sydney and Hannah Donovan, Sydney; granddaughter, Nicole Catherine Curtis.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Florence Williams; three sisters, Ethel, Lucy and Bernice; five brothers, Bernard, Tom, Lauchie, Leo and Morris.
Visitation for the late Mr. Curtis will take place today (Saturday) after 11 a.m. until service time at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish. Funeral mass will follow at 2 p.m. in St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish Beach with Father John Morrison officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Besides Francis and Michael, other grandchildren surviving are Cookie and Barbara, Glace Bay, Neil, of Dartmouth and Jimmy, in Ontario; great-grandchildren are Richard, Murray, Danny, Jackie, Neil Jr., Holly, Christa, Aaron, Colleen, Kevin and Steven; great-grandchildren twins, James and Neil, Christopher, Katerina and Correen.
Elizabeth Edith Trimm
92, Louisbourg
Elizabeth Edith Trimm, 92, of 41 Havenside Rd., Louisbourg, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at home.
Born Dec. 11, 1907 in Scatarie Island, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Susan (Barnstable) Wadden. She was a member of Stella Maris Parish, Main Street, Louisbourg.
She is survived by daughters, Mable Tutty, Louisbourg, Diane (George) Lahey, Lower Sackville, Susan Hercia and Delores (Mike) Gorechy, both of Oshawa; sons, Fabian (Joyce), Joseph (Sylvia), both of Louisbourg, Glenn (Betty Ann), Lower Sackville, James (Chris), White Rock, B.C. Also survived by two brothers, Francis, Main-a-Dieu and Henry, Montreal; 30 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Thomas; daughters, Eileen, Kathleen and Henrietta; and a son, Lester; sisters, Catherine and Maimy; and brothers, Thomas, Wilfred, Austin, Andrew, Patrick and Justin.
Visitation will be held today (Saturday) 7-9:30 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 and 7-9:30 p.m. in the family home at 41 Havenside Rd., Louisbourg. Funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment will be in the Old Stella Maris Cemetery, Louisbourg

Blair Morrison
42, Edmonton / Glace Bay
Blair Patrick Morrison, 42, of Edmonton, and a former resident of Water Street, Glace Bay, passed away Dec. 6, 1999, in Edmonton.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Daniel and Leona (Doyle) Morrison. Blair was an employee of the Laborers’ Union in Alberta. At one time he was a member of Holy Cross Church in Glace Bay.
He is survived by his wife, the former Beverly Strachan; two daughters, Danielle and Dana, both in Edmonton; two brothers, Donnie (Rita), Shubenacadie and Kevin (Gail), Marion Bridge.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Leo and Daniel James.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Michael Joseph Aboud
66, Sydney
Michael Joseph Aboud, Sydney died Dec. 12, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney on July 8, 1933, he was the son of the late Moses and Mary (MacDonald) Aboud.
He was a graduate of Sydney Academy and St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, 1962. He worked as a Social Worker and for the past number of years he resided in Irish Vale. He was a keen gardener and a true lover of nature. He will be remembered as a great conversationalist with an unlimited source of knowledge; an avid sports fan with unwavering loyalty to the Yankees and the Leafs.
Surviving are his sisters Annie (Dave) Robertson, Sydney; Sr. Helen Aboud, CND, Sydney; Marina (Michael) Kovshoff, Montreal; Josephine Aboud, Sydney; Theresa (Dick) McKay, Alberta; Rosemary (Ross) Wheatley, Halifax; and brother Allan, Sydney. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by brothers Charlie and Joseph and a sister Josephine.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Church, Sydney with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
