Charles (Joseph) Harte
74, Glace Bay
Charles (Joseph) Harte, 74 of Jones Manor, Glace Bay, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Simon and Jane (MacDonald) Harte.
Charles was a member of Warden United Church and employed with the town of Glace Bay as a painter.
Charles is survived by his half-sister Catherine MacDonald.
He was predeceased by his brother James Harte; half-brother John-Malcie (Comet) MacDonald; sisters Mrs. Edward (Mamie) Baird and Mrs. Mark (Jean) Gardiner.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Mathews officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
No flowers by request.
Andrew James LeBlanc
82, Alder Point
Andrew James LeBlanc, affectionately known as Andrew Barb, 82, of Alder Point, passed away suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the home where he was born.
Born Oct. 3, 1917, he was the son of the late Alex and Mary LeBlanc. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Alder Point.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Katie (Laffin) LeBlanc; six sons Tommy (Louise), Billy (Aldric), Alder Point, Danny (Lorraine), Bras d’Or, Ron (Pat), Darrell (Laura), Thorald, Ont., Kevin (Luci), Welland, Ont.; seven daughters, Patsy (Butch) Pero, Alder Point, Mary (Lawrence) Keeping, Karen (Richard) Finney, Bras d’Or, Linda (Frank) Howell, Sydney, Donna LeBlanc, Mississauga, Ont., Donica (Eric Stoger) LeBlanc, Pickle Lake, Ont., Heather (Ralph) Carew, Shilo, Manitoba.
Andrew was the beloved Papa of thirty-six grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Eunice MacFarlane, Alder Point and Irene Boutilier, Mapleview Drive and brother Chester LeBlanc, Bras d’Or.
He was predeceased by two daughters in infancy, Lois Ann and Sharon; brothers Charlie, Joe and Roy and a sister Etta.
Andrew spent his entire life in Alder Point where he will be remembered for his generous nature, his love of children, his quick wit and his special rendition of “Molly Bond” as well as being an avid wrestling fan and a talented mechanic. In his later years, Andrew spent many hours watching through his kitchen window, the boats and traffic passing the house in Alder Point.
Visitation will be held at Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, Tuesday, Dec. 14 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Ann’s Church, Alder Point on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the M.S. Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
Evelyn Bates
86, New Waterford
Evelyn Bates, 86, of Breton Nursing Home, formerly of 521 George St., New Waterford, passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Rigby. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford.
She is survived by two daughters, Wilma (Jerry), New Waterford and Evelyn (Ron), Kelowna, B.C.; two sons, Lawrence (Dina), Kelowna, B.C. and Brian (Denena), New Waterford; sister, Margaret Gillis, New Waterford; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence (Buddy) Bates, three sisters, Florence, Vinnie and Olive, three brothers, Wilbert, Vincent and Percey.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. A funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Brayden James Roberts Bernard
Waycobah First Nations
Brayden James Robert Bernard, infant son of Robert and Kelly (Walker) Bernard of Waycobah First Nation, passed away in infancy (stillbirth) on Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness, N.S.
He is survived by his older sisters, Kassidy (2), Kaylyn (4) and an older brother Jordan (11), all at home.
A private burial for the family took place at the Holy Trinity Parish Cemetery in Waycobah, Monday, Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating.
Donations for the family can be made to the Holy Trinity Church, Waycobah or the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
Arrangements for the burial entrusted to the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh.
Selena Jane Gale
69, Florence
Selena Jane (Nean) Gale, 69, of Greenhill, Florence, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Harris) Sommers.
She was a member of Wilson United Church and a lifetime member and past president of the ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 83, Florence.
She is survived by her husband, George (Gigger) Gale; sons, Donnie (Grace), Alberta, George Arthur (Roberta) and Paul (Norma), both of North Sydney; daughters, Goldie (Jimmy), North Sydney, Sherry (George), Florence; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Carl (Betty), Sydney Mines; sisters, Dora (Doe), Jennie and Julia, all of Florence and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Eric.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. in Wilson United Church with Mrs. Linda Scherzinger officiating. Burial will be in lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Mary MacLean
63, Sydney Mines
Mary MacLean, 63, of 201 Crescent St., Sydney Mines, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of Mary Leah (Bragg) Matthews and the late James Matthews. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and the Topps Group in Sydney Mines.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Gordon Pyke, North Sydney and brothers, Clifford and George, both of Sydney Mines.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ervine and her infant brother, James.
Visitation will be in Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with the Rev. Brenda (Drake) MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Trinity Anglican Church.

Grace May, 84, a resident of 38 Cornwall St., North Sydney, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in St. John’s, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Gus and Minnie Andrews.
She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by one daughter, Mildred, New Hampshire; two sons, Fred, Whycocomagh and Robert, North Sydney; three brothers, Fred, Ontario, Jim and Clarence, both of Newfoundland; three sisters, Gertrude Bailey, St. John’s, Nfld., Myrtle Heilley, U.S.A. and Phyllis Fisher, Niagara Falls.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred May, brothers, Harold, Enoch and Gus and a sister, Mildred.
Visitation today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral services Wednesday, 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with the Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
