Memorial Service
A memorial service for the late Peter John Zwarun will be held at St. John’s Church, Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at 10 a.m.
Interment will take place at St. John’s Parish Cemetery following the service.
John (Jack) Brown
79, North Sydney
John (Jack) Brown, 79, a resident of Quilty Drive, North Sydney, passed away Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late Roderick and Catherine Depazzi (Walsh) Brown.
Jack was employed as a coal miner with Devco working in the Princess Colliery for many years. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Olive Rogers; son, Earl (Lynda), Bridgewater; niece, Loretta Brown Colburne, Sydney Mines; three grandchildren, Christopher (Melanie) Brown, Lower Sackville, Angela (Charles) Malay, Dartmouth and Sean Benac, North Sydney and one great-granddaughter, Jessica. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Stella, Sydney Mines and Loretta Brisbois, Detroit.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Thursday 2 p.m. from the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Peppett Street, North Sydney officiated by Pastor Larry Hall and assisted by Pastor Dan Wilson. Burial to follow in Lakeside cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Hector Sheldon Warren
60, Sydney Mines
Hector Sheldon Warren, 60, of 52 Crescent St., Sydney Mines, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at home.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George and Annie (Herman) Warren.
He was a former employee of St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay, and was a retired Devco employee. He was also an auxiliary member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 008 Sydney Mines.
He is survived by his daughter, Joanne, Ontario; sons, Hector, Ontario, James and Timothy, both of Sydney Mines; a sister, Caroline, Glace Bay; a brother, John, Ontario and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Theresa and brothers, Chuck and Danny.
There will be no visitation by family request. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
John Bernard (Bernie) MacNeil
84, Port Hawkesbury
John Bernard (Bernie) MacNeil, 76, of 15 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Joseph and Christina (Jobes) MacNeil.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. A veteran of the Second World War, he was a member of Breton Branch 8, Royal Canadian Legion, Sydney Mines. He was employed at the British Canadian Co-op in Sydney Mines until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Kay) Costello and his sons, Joseph (Ethel), Ingonish, Gerard (Karen), P.E.I., Ian (Heather) and Sandy (Darlene), both of Sydney Mines, Eric (Colleen) and Larry (Lana), both of Henton, Alta.; his daughter, Katherine (Mrs. Rob Gray), Dartmouth. He is survived by his sisters, Sr. Anne Mary, CND, Sydney Mines, Camillus (Mrs. Peter Ross) and Loretta, both of Halifax, Theresa (Mrs. Joseph Valley), Ontario; his stepdaughters, Dora (Mrs. William Murphy), Millville, Ruth Anne (Mrs. Charles Williams) and Eileen (Mrs. Ernest LeBlanc), both of Sydney Mines, Paulette (Mrs. Alex Moore), North Sydney and Bernadette Whalen, Ontario; his stepsons, Donnie and Richard Whalen, both of Dartmouth and Michael and Joseph Whalen, both of Bass River, N.S. and his grandchildren, Jillian, Joseph, Lisa, Sarah, Sandy, Christopher, Jason, Katy, Michelle, Megan, Morgan and Christian and several step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Exelia Jerrett, brothers, Lawrence and Michael and his sister, Mary MacNeil.
Visitation today (Thursday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Sarah (Sally) Marsh
79, Glace Bay
Surrounded by her loving family, Sarah (Sally) Marsh, 79, of 86 Nolan’s Lane, Glace Bay, and a former resident of International Street, Passchendaele, died peacefully at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Anne (McIntyre) O’Handley, Passchendaele.
Sally worked for many years as a nurse’s aid and a ward clerk at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, McKay’s Corner and in former years was a member of the parish Ladies Sodality. She was also a former member of St. Anthony’s CWL.
Surviving are daughters, Myrna, Prince Edward Island, Patsy, Jeanie, Lorene, all of Glace Bay; son, Henry, Glace Bay and stepson, Dave Marsh, Reserve Mines; a very special family friend, Emma T. Currie, Glace Bay; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hilda McNeil, British Columbia and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Alonzo McDougall in 1940 and her second husband, Henry (Fuff) Marsh in 1986, by a daughter, Rose-Anne, stepson, Malcolm F. Marsh, grandson, Robbie McDonald, sisters, Collena, Mary, Stashia, Cecilia, Elizabeth, brothers, James, John, Neil, Sam, Jimmie and Bowfield.
Visitation to be held at Curry’s Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay, Friday, Dec. 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by Fr. Ray Huntley at Holy Family Church, McKay’s Corner, Saturday, 11 a.m. Interment in the parish cemetery, McLeod’s Road, Glace Bay.

M.J. (Mickey) Poirier
69, North Sydney
Michaelina Josephine Poirier, of Beacon Street, North Sydney, formerly of Grand Narrows, passed away at the C.B. Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999.
Born in Sydney, Michaelina was a daughter of the late Dan F. and Mary Ann (MacKenzie) MacInnis.
She was a member of St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island. Michaelina was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her.
Michaelina is survived by her daughter, Glenda (Allen) Roberts, Salt Spring, Pictou County; three sons, Lloyd, Lower Sackville, Kevin, Oshawa, Ont., and Daniel, Glace Bay; two sisters, Sr. Rita MacInnis, Holy Angels Convent and Sr. Catherine MacInnis, St. Theresa’s Convent; two brothers, Howard, Dartmouth and Lloyd (Buddy), Lower Sackville and her 13 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, George in 1974; a sister, Helen, and four brothers, James, Joe, Neil and Malcolm.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday, Dec. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island, Saturday, Dec. 18, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joe A. MacNeil officiating. Interment will be in the Christmas Island Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of one’s choice.
Henry Thomas Slater
84, Port Hawkesbury
Henry Thomas Slater, 84, of Port Hawkesbury, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Harry and Bessie (Ripley) Slater.
He was a salesman for Canada Packers, Sydney, for 38 years. He also worked for H.G. MacInnis Gulf Oil Bulk Plant, Port Hawkesbury for eight years. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury. He was a former clerk of session and also an elder. He was a former superintendent of Sunday School of the Zion Robertson United Church, Port Hawkesbury. He was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury for 40 years and also a past secretary of the legion. He was a former member of the Strait of Canso Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Lena MacKenzie; daughters, Joan (Mike) Forbrigger, Port Hawkesbury, Gail Slater, Halifax; son, Greg (Francie), Whitby, Ont.; sister, Bessie Henderson, Ancaster, Ont.; brother, Roland, Toronto; grandchildren, Wendy, David, Michelle, William, Alison and Bradley; one great-granddaughter, Meghan.
Predeceased by sisters, Anna, Evelyn Barnes, Priscilla Bezanson.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from St. Mark’s United Church with Rev. Debbie Aiken officiating. Burial will be in Southbrook Cemetery.
