Catherine Annie Gillis

Catherine Annie Gillis, 75, East Lake Ainslie, passed away on Dec. 17, 1999, at home.
Born at Campbell Rd., Judique South, she was the daughter of the late Archibald and Annie (MacDonald) Gillis of Judique South. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, South West Margaree. She was the last member of her family.
She is survived by one son Michael Joseph Gillis and his wife Karen, East Lake Ainslie; eight nieces, Dotty, Eileen, Sarah Ann, Mary Flora, Mary Ann, Ann Marie, Louise and Joanne; four cousins, Allan Joseph, Donald Angus, Neil Archie and Dan Alex. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Mike and Curtis.
Predeceased by her friend Donald Allan MacKinnon; sisters, Mary Flora, Mamie, Mary Margaret, Mary Ann and twin sisters Barbara and Catherine; two brothers Hughie and Michael and three in infancy.
The late Mrs. Catherine Annie Gillis rested at the Inverness Funeral Home Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and will be resting today (Monday) at the Kinsmen Center in Judique 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Church, Judique, with the Rev. Allan MacMillan officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Lake Ainslie Volunteer Fire Department or charity of choice.

Martha Sylvia Kasouf
North Sydney
Martha Sylvia Kasouf a resident of Prince St., North Sydney, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Mary (Rahey) Kelloff. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in North Sydney. Martha owned and operated the Maple Bud Confectionary in North Sydney, first with her husband Phil and sister Mary, then later with her two sons, Mike and Phil.
Surviving are two sons, Phil, Sydney, and Mike, at home; one daughter, Edna, at home; sister Mary Kelloff, at home, and one precious granddaughter, Ashley.
Predeceased by husband Phil, her parents; nine brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be held Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday 10 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice / Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or to any Children’s Charity.
She was loved and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Sarah Catherine MacIsaac
83, New Waterford
Sarah Catherine MacIsaac, 83, of 407 12th Street, New Waterford, died Sunday Dec. 19, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late John Alex and Mary Jane (MacDonald) Kennedy. She was a member of Mount Carmel Parish.
Sarah is survived by five daughters: Greta (Mrs. Cameron Longphee), Jackline (Mrs. Frank MacPherson), Mary (Mrs. Glenn Pasher), Cathy Pembroke, all of New Waterford, and Blossom (Mrs. John Duprey), Inverness; six sons: Sander (Betty), Sydney, Angie (Edna), Inverness, Wayne (Karyn), Germany, Neil (Lynn), Kitimat, B.C., Douglas, Calgary, Alta., Joseph (Patricia), Hampton, N.B. Also surviving are two brothers, Josie Kennedy and Jack Kennedy, both of Inverness, and three sisters: Dolly MacIsaac, New Victoria, Madeline MacIsaac, Inverness, and Milly MacEachern, Inverness, son-in-law Danny Longphee, daughter-in-law Margie Power; 42 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dougall MacIsaac, in 1983; one son Donald; one daughter Marie; two brothers, Dougall and Neil; two sisters, Mendy and Kay, and six grandchildren.
Visitation for the late Sarah MacIsaac will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Members of the KOC are asked to assemble at 7:30 p.m. on Monday for prayers.
Louis William (Bill) Roach
69, Craigmore, Inverness Co.
Louis William (Bill) Roach, passed away peacefully in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, late Friday, Dec. 17, 1999.
Born in Inverness on Feb. 25, 1930, he was the son of the late Patrick and Domethilde (AuCoin) Roach. He retired from Stora in 1995 and prior to that worked in Halifax and Boston in the Heating and Air Conditioning Trade. He was an active member of Stella Maris Parish, Creignish, where he served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and a choir member. He belonged to the Cape Nova Council Knights of Columbus, Port Hawkesbury, and the Creignish Square Dance Club. He was a board member of the Creignish Recreation Center. In his youth he was a volunteer with the Inverness Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife the former Dolena MacDonald; daughter Darlene (Donnie) MacLellan; Inverside; sons, Ronald (Jeanette), Kanata, Ont., Bill (Marilyn), Ottawa, Brian (Patricia), St. Albert, Alta.; sisters, Judy (Dan) MacIsaac, Fernie, B.C., Theresa (Hugh) MacIntyre, Inverness, Mary Catherine Plante, Inverness, Vonnie (Malcolm) MacIsaac, Inverness, Peggy (Ron) Gallant, Dundas, Ont.; brothers, Simon (Mary Louise), Grimsby, Ont., Larry, Sudbury, Ont., Jack (Anne), Toronto; grandchildren Liam Roach, Lindsay and Kristy Roach, Katheryne Roach, Brock, Makayla and Ryland MacLellan.
He was predeceased by infant son Raymond Louis; granddaughter Kelly Jeanne; an infant granddaughter Shauna Marie; brothers Gerard and Peter.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. this evening and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday from Stella Maris Church, Creignish with Rev. Hughie D. MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery, Inverness at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society of the charity of choice.
Agnes (Johnson) Rushton (C)
67, Sydney Mines
Mrs. Agnes (Johnson) Rushton, 67, of 266 Ocean Street, Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999 at the Northside General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Boyd) Johnson. She was employed in the food service industry in Montreal, Quebec and Toronto. She is survived by her daughters Judy (Bud) Forrest, Sydney Mines, and Lynda (Phillip) Levesque, Quebec; her brothers William Jr., N.S., Alex and Charles (Chuckie), Sydney Mines, Joey and Martin, Ontario; her sisters Nora Lawton, Ont., Mary Sarah Boehm, B.C., and Kay Johnson and by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband John Rushton and her sisters Carol Polloch and Emma Bunio.
She was well loved by all who knew her.
Visitation today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
Alexander James (Sandy) Cathcart
Alexander James (Sandy) Cathcart, CWO, retired CD, 58, of Main Street, Port Morien, who died Dec. 19, 1999 at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, will have visitation Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin, with Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating.
Burial in St. Luke’s United Cemetery, Donkin.
Elizabeth Gouthro
89, New Waterford
Elizabeth Gouthro, 89, of 717 Mahon St., New Waterford, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 12, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Eliaze and Marcella (MacIsaac) Perfect.
She was a member of Saint Michael’s Church, River Ryan. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty (Mrs. Web Woodland), New Waterford, with whom she resided for the past 23 years, Marcella (Mrs. Harold Penny), Scotchtown; one son, Bernie (Gwen) Walker, New Waterford; two daughters-in-law, Mary Walker and Ann Gouthro, both of New Waterford. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her first husband, Vince Walker and her second husband, Henry (Sonny) Gouthro; two sons, Malcolm Walker and Henry (Sonny) Gouthro Jr., four sisters, Gertie (Mrs. Nelson Deveaux), Sadie (Mrs. George MacKinnon), Mrs. Kay Gardner (Detienne), Mary (Mrs. Jim MacLeod), three brothers, Joe Perfect, Archie Perfect (T.C.) and John Joe Perfect (Duddy).
Lizzie will be so sadly missed by her loving family and friends especially by her friend Cleo Steiger and by Jean Fahey who looked after Mum for the past two years. Lizzie was a kind and passionate lady who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
