Gloria Asta Petrine (Holm) Digero
70, New Waterford
Gloria Asta Petrine (Holm) Digero, 70, of 3246 MacLeod Ave., New Waterford, the youngest daughter of the late Hans and Petrine (Pedersen) Holm, died Saturday Dec. 25, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
She was born in the New Waterford General Hospital in 1929 and educated at Central School. Gloria was a member of Glace Bay Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In early years, she was quite active with her piano accordion and a member of the Doris MacDonald dance classes in tap and ballet. She then went on to teach all phases of weaving in which she was most proficient and was employed through the government to teach this art in several schools. An avid gardener, her flower beds and shrubs were among the most beautiful for miles around. Much of her time in later years was taken up in teaching Home Bible Studies in which she had quite a number. She loved to write stories and write poetry and was involved in the Creative Writing class at Marconi Campus.
Gloria is survived by her husband Albert Digero; one son Gordon (Elaine), Yukon; one sister Karen (Holm) Shaw, New Waterford; four grandchildren, Petrine, Jason, Tove and Thekla and three great-grandchildren Samantha, Damian and Amanda Clare and also several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers Dick and Gordon and three sisters Carola, Tove and Thekla.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2000, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Reserve Street, Glace Bay, Richard Volkes officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.

Lawrence (Red) Farrell
73, Sydney
Lawrence (Red) Farrell, 73, of 769 Victoria Road, Sydney, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bay du Nord, Fortune Bay, Nfld., he was the son of the late Pius and Bernadette Farrell. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Sydney. He worked at the Sydney Steel Corporation until his retirement in 1989.
Surviving are his wife Eileen; two daughters Marguerite (Mrs. John Pittman) and Lillian (Mrs. Bruce Andrews), both of Sydney River; five sons Adrian (Janice), Sydney, Bernie (Margo), Newport Corner, Windsor, David (Margie), Ingonish, Larry (Kim), Baddeck, and Maurice (Moe), at home; sister Gertrude (Mrs. Maurice Hillier), Sydney and one brother Philip (Dorothy) Farrell, Sydney. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Stephen, Janet and Brent Pittman, Adrian and Heather Farrell, Rebecca and Vivian Farrell, Colin and Cara Andrews and Meghan, Devin and Christopher Farrell.
He was predeceased by two brothers Adrian and Pius.
The late Mr. Farrell will have visitation today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Frank Daniel Lachowiez
Sydney
Frank Lachowiez, 73, of Sydney, passed away December 24, 1999, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Mike and Annie (MacKinnon) Lachowiez. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 12, Sydney. Frank retired from the Sydney Steel Corporation with 38 years of service.
He is survived by daughter Betty Ann (Pat Ricks), Virginia Beach, Virginia; son Ron (Joanne), Sydney River; three sisters, Helen McNeil, Sydney, Gloria (Gerald) MacDonald, Sydney and Amelida (Jerry) MacKinnon-Kelly, Sydney; brother Michael (Dianne), Dartmouth; three grandchildren Glenn, Robbie and Katie.
Predeceased by one son Gary; sister Gladys and two brothers Fred and Bob.
The late Mr. Lachowiez will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church with Fr. A. O’Connor officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Mary Elizabeth MacKinnon
80, East Bay
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Peter) MacKinnon, age 80, of Morley Rd., East Bay, died Dec. 25, 1999 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at East Bay, she was the daughter of the late Dan R. and Elizabeth (Johnson) Campbell. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, East Bay.
She is survived by her daughter Sharron (Mrs. Tom Blanchard), East Bay; sons Donnie (Betty) Coxheath, Neil (Darlene), Blacketts Lake, Anthony (Debbie), East Bay; her sister Margaret A. Campbell of Sydney and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter and her sister Mary Anne MacPherson.
Visitation was held Sunday, Dec. 26, in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay, with Rev. Frank Abbass officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Louis Arthur (Louie) Mombourquette
64, Sydney
Mr. Louis Arthur (Louie) Mombourquette, 64, passed away suddenly December 24th, 1999.
Born in Whitney Pier, he was the son of the late Louis and Jean (Muise) Mombourquette. Louie was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier. A plumber by trade, Louie worked for many years for J. W. Rudderham and J.D. Smith, later owning his own business. Retired, he was an active member of local 682, Plumbers and Pipe Fitters of America. During his earlier years, Louie was a team member of the Broadway Ramblers Soccer Club, and for many years was very dedicated to Whitney Pier Youth hockey.
Louie is survived by his wife Kaye (Gillis); sons Rick (Holly) Edmonton, Chuck (Gina), Sydney; daughters Lee Anne (Mrs. John Ratchford), Sydney, Debbie (Mrs. Allister Rudderham), Sydney, Kathy (Mrs. Shaun Pearson), Hamilton. He will be sadly missed by his precious 12 grandchildren, Grant, Blake, Sheena, Mitchell, Stephanie, Katherine, Krista, James, Adam, Danielle, Dylan and Johnathan. Also surviving are brothers Joe, Leo, Brian, all of Sydney, John in Halifax; sisters Anna Bennette, Joan Hayes, Louise MacDonald, Paulette Pearson, and Charlene MacDonald, all of Sydney.
He was predeceased by brothers Peter, Alex and Michael and his sister Florence Morrison.
Visitation will be in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Leo Patrick Roach
79, New Waterford
Leo Patrick Roach, 79, formerly of 3244 Nicholson Ave., New Waterford, passed away peacefully on Dec. 25, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary (MacKinnon) Roach. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford, and was employed as a coal miner for many years until his retirement. Leo was involved with the New Waterford Joy Program which he enjoyed very much.
He is survived by his brother Alphonse of Petit De Grat.
He was predeceased by his wife Mina (Deveaux) Roach and by step-daughter Maria (MacEachern); son-in-law Kevin MacEachern; granddaughters Andrea, Jocelyn and Deidre, all of Lingan. Leo was also predeceased by his first wife Marie Therese Bourgeois Roach.
Survived by a daughter Louise Roach and son Cyril Roach; daughter-in-law Brenda MacKinnon and grandchildren Cyril, Stephen and Shannon, all of New Waterford.
Leo was also predeceased by brothers and sisters, Emma, Dannie, Zabine, Johnnie, Joseph, Pierre, Hubert, Zabeth, Sarah, Eveline, Marie Louise, Marcellin, Marie Therese and Beatrice.
Visitation for the late Mr. Roach will be in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Homel, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford on Tuesday evening 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday from Mount Carmel Church with Father Donald McGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Alton Berkley Sutton
76, Glace Bay
Alton Berkley Sutton, 76, of 86 Nolans Lane, Glace Bay, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he is the son of the late Berkley and Maude (Murphy) Sutton. Mr. Sutton was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay. Mr. Sutton was employed with the Radar Base as a Engineer for 20 years until his retirement in 1984. He served in the Second World War with the Signal Corp. for three years. He was a life member of John Bernard Croak VC Legion Branch 003, Glace Bay. and a member of the Royal Canadian Signal Association.
Mr. Sutton is survived by his wife Gladys (Payne) Sutton, Glace Bay; son Alton Jr., Ottawa; daughter, Ila MacMullin, Bedford, N.S.; daughter-in-law Josephine, Glace Bay; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by son Sherman; sisters Shirley and Noreen; daughter-in-law Sheila.
Their will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements entrusted to Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, Glace Bay.
