Catherine Margaret Wright
90, Sydney
Catherine Margaret Wright, 90, of Kings Road, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Cape North, Catherine was a daughter of the late John Wm. And Mary (MacDonald) Burton.
She is survived by her husband Arthur; two sisters Lillian, Toronto, and Margaret Burton, Port Hawkesbury.
She was predeceased by six sisters and seven brothers. Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Wednesday 2 p.m. with Pastor Mike Thorburn officiating. Interment in MacPherson Cemetery, Cape North.
John James Young
28, New Waterford
John James Young, 28, of 30 Catherine St., Scotchtown passed away suddenly at home on Dec. 25, 1999.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of John William Young and the late Diane (Peckham). He was employed in Prince Edward Island for the past 11 years.
He is survived by his wife Tracey Lynn MacLeod; four children Tanya Marie, John Andrew, Rebecca Diane and Kallie Renee.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
George Louis Butler
86, St. Peter’s
George Louis Butler, age 86 of St. Peter’s, died Monday Dec. 27, 1999 at the Strait-Richmond Hospital.
Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, he was the son of the late William and Katherine (MacDonald) Butler. He was a veteran of the Second World War and member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47 in St. Peter’s. He was employed with the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission for 23 years.
He is survived by one son, William, and one daughter, Dolly.
He was predeceased by his wife Eva, sons Michael and Patrick and one brother, Tom.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will take place Thursday, 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Rev. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Jean J. Campbell
87, Florence
Ms. Jean J. Campbell, 87, of 52 School St., Florence, passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney after a lengthy illness.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late David and Mary (Stephenson) Campbell.
She was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence, and United Church Womens Group. She was an active member of “The Arms of Gold” Rebekah Lodge 91.
Jean is survived by her sister Mary Waugh, Sydney Mines, was a loving aunt, great aunt and great grand-aunt and will be sadly missed by all.
She was predeceased by brothers Malcolm, Edward, David, Hughie and Joe.
By family request, there will be no visitation. Arrangements are incomplete. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wilson Church Building Fund or a charity of choice.

Murdoch S. Jenkins
Coxheath
Murdoch Jenkins, 83, of 33 Keefe Ave., Coxheath, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney Mines he was the son of the late William and Emily (Searle) Jenkins. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. Murdoch was a life long lover of horses and was active in Cape Breton harness racing circles. He was a carpenter by trade working for Island Construction and various other firms in Cape Breton.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Ross. Murdoch is survived by a son Melvin and by several sisters and brothers; by six step-children and by numerous grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister and three brothers.
The late Mr. Jenkins will have no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in Our Lady of Fatima Church with Rev. N. MacPhee officiating. Interment in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Bras d’Or.

Frank J. MacDonald
Halifax
Frank J. MacDonald, P.Eng. died on December 26, 1999, at the Q.E. II, Halifax Infirmary Site. Born in 1920 in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Allan J. and Maggie (MacIsaac) MacDonald. He obtained his early education at St. Ann's High in Glace Bay. In 1944 he received his Diploma in Engineering from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Nova Scotia Technical College in 1947.
On Dec. 26, 1945 he married Marguerite Rogers in Glace Bay. Upon graduating from TECH he took a position with Bailey Meter Company and spent the early part of his career in Cleveland, Ohio and Montreal, Que. before settling in Halifax in 1950. He served his profession in various capacities including a term as vice-president followed by a term as President of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. After retiring from Bailey Meter in 1977 he served as executive secretary and registrar with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia until his retirement in 1992. He was a life member of APENS. In 1992 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from TUNS. He was a fellow of the Engineering Institution of Canada. For many years he served the province on the Board of Examiners under the Engine Operators Act.
He is survived by his daughter Elaine Grantham, son-in-law Tom, granddaughters Laura and Anna, grandson Paul; son Frank, daughter-in-law Susan, grandson Patrick, granddaughter Jennifer; son Bill, daughter-in-law Betty, grandsons David and Jamie; his sister Joan Townsend and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Marguerite (Peggy); brothers Donald, Angus and Michael; sisters Annie and Catherine.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, with a reception to follow. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The family gratefully declines flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association.
Nelda Inogene MacLean
66, Port Caledonia
Nelda Inogene MacLean, 66 of Port Caledonia, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Port Caledonia, she was the daughter of the late Ottie and Laura (Howie) Patten. Nelda was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Johovah’s Witnesses, Glace Bay.
Nelda is survived by daughters, Joanne (Roddie) MacLeod, Glace Bay, Marie Gilbert (Patrick), Glace Bay; sons Joe (Christina) MacLean, Marion Bridge, Kenny (Anita) Gilbert, Donkin, Thomas (Lorraine), New Brunswick, Lawrence (Nancy) Gilbert, Glace Bay, Allan (Glenis) MacLean, Calgary; sister Mary MacLean, Port Caledonia; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Bernie MacLean and a son in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 29, followed by a memorial service in the Patten Funeral Home Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay with Richard Volkes officiating. Their will be a private family service at St. Lukes Cemetery, Donkin.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
