Maurice Roderick MacRae
56, Boularderie
Maurice Roderick MacRae, 56, of Boularderie, died December 27, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Big Harbour he was the son of George and the late Janie B. (MacDonald) MacRae. He was a member of Ephriam Scott Presbyterian Church, South Haven. He worked for many years with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, Steel Bridge Department and retired as a supervisor.
He is survived by his father George MacRae, North Sydney; three brothers Carl (Rita), Sydney Mines, Harold (Sheila), Halifax and Murray, Middle River; two sisters Dorothy Ellsworth, North Sydney and Isabel (Mrs. Robin Grant), Sydney Mines.
He was predeceased by his mother Janie (MacDonald) and a brother in infancy.
The body is resting at Ephriam Scott Presbyterian Church with visiting Tuesday (today) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Ephriam Scott Presbyterian Church, South Haven with Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. Burial will be in Harbour View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ephriam Scott Memorial Fund or charity of one’s choice.

Leo Patrick Roach
79, New Waterford
Leo Patrick Roach, 79, formerly of 3244 Nicholson Ave., New Waterford, passed away peacefully on Dec. 25, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary (MacKinnon) Roach. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford, and was employed as a coal miner for many years until his retirement. Leo was involved with the New Waterford Joy Program which he enjoyed very much.
He is survived by his brother Alphonse of Petit De Grat.
He was predeceased by his wife Mina (Deveau) Roach and survived by his step-daughter Maria (MacEachern); son-in-law Kevin MacEachern; granddaughters Andrea, Jocelyn and Deidre, all of Lingan.
Leo was also predeceased by his first wife Marie Therese Bourgeois Roach.
Survived by a daughter Louise Roach and his son Cyril Roach; daughter-in-law Brenda MacKinnon and grandchildren Cyril, Steven and Shannon, all of New Waterford.
Leo was also predeceased by brothers and sisters, Emma, Annie, Zabine, Johnnie, Joseph, Pierre, Hubert, Elizabeth, Sarah, Eveline, Marie Louise and Marcellin.
Visitation for the late Mr. Roach will be in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Homel, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford on Tuesday evening 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday from Mount Carmel Church with Father Donald McGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Harold Russell Watts
65, New Waterford
Suddenly at home at 391 Cockburn St., on Dec. 26, 1999 the death occurred of Russell Watts.
Death followed a lengthy period of health problems during which he was lovingly cared for by his devoted wife, Elsie (Anderson).
Russell was the son of the late Edward and Helen (White) Watts.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sisters, Major Ethel Watts (retired) of the Salvation Army, Laura (John R.) MacKinnon and Catherine (John) Head, all of New Waterford, and two brothers, Earl of New Waterford, and Kenneth (Sharon) of Winnipeg.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Eldin, Dave, Hartwell and George and twin infant sisters.
Russell was a coal miner for 26 years, working for the Cape Breton Railway following the final fire at the No. 12 Colliery. He was a retired member of the Board of Stewards of Calvin United Church. A retired member of the Board of Trustees of the Community Rink and a retired volunteer fireman with the New Waterford Fire Department.
Visitation will take place from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Funeral service to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.
Members of the Cape Breton Fire Fighters Fraternal Association are asked to meet at the New Waterford Fire Station at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Stella Pearl Dixon
76, South Harbour
Stella Pearl Dixon, 76, of South Harbour, C.B., died Dec. 27, 1999, in the Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neil’s Harbour, C.B.
Born on Oct. 21, 1923, she was one of twin daughters of the late Michael and Priscilla (Donovan) Barron of Ingonish Harbour. She worked for a time at the Keltic Lodge in Ingonish before marrying Percy, her husband of almost 50 years. They lived most of their married life in South Harbour, Vict. Co. where Dad fished while Mom cared for the family. Stella was a dedicated mother who leaves behind a legacy of proud love and unfailing care and concern for her children and grandchildren, all of whom will carry her memory, and our loss, with us forever.
Mom leaves behind our Dad, Percy, at the Highland Manor in Neil’s Harbour, Betty (Brian MacNeil), Dartmouth; twins Perry (Heather), Ingonish and Barry (Sandy), Stellarton; twins Geraldine (Stewart Jobe), Thompson, Manitoba and Gerald, Windsor, N.S., Patsy, Halifax and Vivian, Thompson, Manitoba. Also surviving her are special grandchildren Gary and Heather, Jonathan and Jenny, Evan and Eleanor, Amy and Alicia. Her twin sister Rita; sister Frances and brothers John B. (Bud), all of Ingonish and Gerald of Ontario, are also mourning her passing, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers Alex, Michael, Godfrey and sisters Mary and Theresa.
Her sons and daughters will welcome visitors at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home in Ingonish from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Dec. 29. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 30 from St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ingonish, Father John Morrison officiating. Burial will take place at the cemetery of St. Joseph’s in Dingwall.
Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Buchanan Memorial Hospital.
We, her children, thank God for the gift of our mother’s love and entrust Him with Mom’s care now.
Gerald R. (Jerry) Johnson
78, Sydney Mines
Gerald R. (Jerry) Johnson, 78, of 22 View Street, Sydney Mines, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, 1999, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Indian Harbour, Halifax County on July 4, 1921, he was the son of the late Ralph and Grace (Harris) Johnson. In his earlier years he was employed with Old Sydney Collieries and later with Devco until his retirement. He was an avid fisherman and hunter until ill health curtailed these activities.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 53 years Dorothy (Hiscock) Johnson; his son Bob (Paula), Dartmouth; his daughters Brenda at home and Cheryl (Tom) Engram, Halifax. He will be sadly missed by his five grandchildren Zachary and Tyler Johnson and Judith, Rebecca and Elizabeth Engram. Also surviving are his sisters Carrie Grawuellmen, Lower Sackville and Marjorie Armstrong, Chester.
He was predeceased by his sisters Blanche Johnson and Luetta Fralick.
Cremation has taken place. Following the wishes of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring.

James Leo MacLean
81, Sydney
James Leo MacLean, 81, of 125 Inglis St. and a lifelong resident of Ashby, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Ottawa Brook, he was the son of the late Archie and Tina (MacNeil) MacLean. He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney. He served overseas during the Second World War with the R.C.A.F. and was a member of the Ashby Branch No. 138 Royal Canadian Legion. In his early days he played hockey and baseball in most of the leagues of his day. His greatest love in sports was for harness racing. He was employed at the Sydney Steel Corp. for 46 years in the Open Mechanical Department, retiring in 1974.
He is survived by his wife, the former Agnes Marguerite Scott; five sons, Richard, High River, Alta., Leonard, Sussex, N.B., Robert (Mary), Sydney, Norman, High River, Alta. and Darren (Donna), High River, Alta.; three sisters, Theresa (Mrs. Sonny Rostick), New Waterford, Mrs. Mary McGrath, Sydney and Eileen (Mrs. Bernie Johnston), Sydney; two brothers Redmond (A.O.), Sydney and Mickey (Marg), Ontario. Also surviving are nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Sister Leonardo “Anne”, Marie (Mrs. Dan Gillis); two brothers, Rev. Leonard MacLean and Jack MacLean.
The late Mr. MacLean will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Comfort Fund.
Hugh Edward (Ted) Parker
82, Halifax
Hugh Edward (Ted) Parker, 82, of 1333 South Park Street, Halifax, N.S., died on Dec. 26, 1999 in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born in Sydney, N.S., he was the son of the late Dr. J. Primrose Parker and Nina (MacGillivary) Parker. He was educated at Sydney Academy and Mount Allison University. He owned an accounting firm in Sydney and later served as budget co-ordinator at the Victoria General Hospital. He did voluntary work for the Ronald McDonald House, the Halifax Bengal Lancers and the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Two sons, John P., (wife Sharon Brookbank) and Hugh W., (wife Marija Dambergs) of Halifax; two daughters, Mary and Libby (Elizabeth) of Montreal and five grandchildren, Curtis, Trevor, Emily, Anna and Natalie, survive him.
His wife Elizabeth (Bessie) MacDonald and brothers Captain John P. Parker, Dr. Ralph Parker of North Sydney and Dr. Hardy Parker of Halifax predeceased him. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Ted was an avid angler and the author of Nova Scotia’s Speckled Trout versus the Angling Novice. He was a supporter of the Halifax Wildlife Association, Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation, Nova Scotia Salmon Association and the Atlantic Salmon Association.
He was a member of All Saints Cathedral. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Cathedral, Halifax, Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Halifax Victorian Order of Nurses, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or charity of choice.
