Charles Edward Andrews
83, Sydney
Charles Edward Andrews of the Breton Bay Nursing Home, passed away at Breton Bay Nursing Home on Monday, Dec. 27, 1999.
Born in East Bay, N.S., Charles was a son of the late John Thomas and Carliene (MacDonald) Andrews. He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Church and worked as a laborer for A.E. Reeves and Sons.
Charles is survived by his four nieces, Linda Wareham, Margie Taylor, Lorraine Moore, and Alice Landry.
He was predeceased by his wife Irene (Landry) and a brother Tom.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will take place at Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
Mary Evelyn MacKay, R.N.
81, Sydney
Mary Evelyn MacKay, R.N., 81, of The Cove Guest Home in Sydney, formerly of Charlotte St., Sydney, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (MacKeigan) MacDonald. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney. She was a retired Registered Nurse having graduated from the Sydney City School of Nursing in 1942 and was a member of their alumni. She was active with the UCW for many years.
Survived by one sister-in-law Sebina MacDonald, Sydney Mines; two nieces and eight nephews.
Predeceased by her husband Hector in 1973; two brothers John and Russell and two brothers in infancy.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Catherine (Kay) E. (Kenny) McGee
89, North Sydney
Catherine (Kay) Ellen (Kenny) McGee, 89, a resident of the Northside Guest Home and formerly of 5 Forrest St., North Sydney died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 at the Guest Home.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Janet (Stevenson) MacDonald. She was a graduate of the Robinson Hair Design Academy in Montreal, Que. She was an Avon representative in the local area for a number of years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, member of Society of the Little Flower, longtime supporter and promoter of the Miraculous Medal Society, member of Sydney Mines Senior Citizens Club, former member of Children of Mary. Kay enjoyed playing the piano, dancing, sing-songs and telling humorous stories.
She is survived by one son, Howard (Catherine) Kenny, Sydney; three daughters, Maureen (Mrs. Jim Doyle), Sydney Mines, Mary (Mrs. Elio Ianetti), Rome, Italy, Dorothy (Mrs. Albert Sumarah), Halifax; one sister, Dorothy Martin, Sydney; one brother, Cyril MacDonald, Sydney; 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Kay’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a great joy in her life.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Lawrence Joseph Kenny and by her second husband, Stephen McGee, two sons, Donald and Lawrence, one daughter, Lorraine, one brother, Professor Jim MacDonald and one sister, Mary Wicks.
Visitation today from 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Friday, 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to a charity of one’s choice.
Douglas Metcalf
7, Glace Bay
Douglas Metcalfe, 7, of 7 Willowdale Dr., Glace Bay, died Wednesday Dec. 29, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Margaret (Peggy) Metcalfe and Darrell Currie.
Survived by one sister Cherice at home and his maternal grandparents Catherine (Kay) Metcalfe and Donald Currie and several aunts and uncles and a special friend Patricia and family.
Predeceased by his paternal grandparents Pearl Currie and Russell Metcalfe.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 30, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.
Hugh Edward (Ted) Parker
82, Halifax
Hugh Edward (Ted) Parker, 82, of 1333 South Park Street, Halifax, N.S., died on Dec. 26, 1999 in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born in Sydney, N.S., he was the son of the late Dr. J. Primrose Parker and Nina (MacGillivary) Parker. He was educated at Sydney Academy and Mount Allison University. He owned an accounting firm in Sydney and later served as budget co-ordinator at the Victoria General Hospital. He did voluntary work for the Ronald McDonald House, the Halifax Bengal Lancers and the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Two sons, John P., (wife Sharon Brookbank) and Hugh W., (wife Marija Dambergs) of Halifax; two daughters, Mary and Libby (Elizabeth) of Montreal and five grandchildren, Curtis, Trevor, Emily, Anna and Natalie, survive him.
His wife Elizabeth (Bessie) MacDonald and brothers Captain John P. Parker, Dr. Ralph Parker of North Sydney and Dr. Hardy Parker of Halifax predeceased him. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Ted was an avid angler and the author of Nova Scotia’s Speckled Trout versus the Angling Novice. He was a supporter of the Halifax Wildlife Association, Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation, Nova Scotia Salmon Association and the Atlantic Salmon Association.
He was a member of All Saints Cathedral. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Cathedral, Halifax, Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Halifax Victorian Order of Nurses, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or charity of choice.
William (Bill) Burns
84, New Waterford
William (Bill) Burns, 84 of 477 1st Street, New Waterford passed away peacefully on December 30 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (MacDougall) Burns. He was a member of Saint Agnes Parish and the New Waterford Pensioners Club. He was self-employed as a carpenter for years until his retirement.
Surviving are his wife Theresa; seven sons Lee (Vern), Alex John (Charlene), both of Cheticamp, Paul (Elaine), Winnipeg, Georgie (Sebeth), Montreal, James (Buddy), Joe and Leo (Darlene), all of New Waterford; two daughters, Barbara (Charlie) McPhee, New Waterford and Rhobina (Joseph), New Brunswick; two sisters Annie, Reserve and Elizabeth of Cheticamp; 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife Mary; two brothers Freddie and John and three sisters Mary, Bernadette and Lucy, also a son and daughter in infancy. During his lengthy illness, he was lovingly cared for by four of his grandchildren, Tammy, Amanda, Tanya and Kyle.
Visitation for the late William Burns will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford on Saturday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in Saint Agnes Church with Father Bob Neville officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Lung association.
Husky Campbell
81, Sydney
John Ambrose “Husky” Campbell, 81, of 15 Douglas St., Sydney, and a life-long resident of the northend, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Michael and Catherine (MacIsaac) Campbell. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney. Husky was an avid sports fan, enjoying hockey and harness racing all his life. In 1979 he retired from the CNR Freight Shed after 40 years service. Following his retirement, Husky worked as caretaker at Sacred Heart Church for another 15 years.
He is survived by three sisters, Catherine (Malcolm) Ferguson, Sydney, Mrs. Mary MacDonald, East Bay, and Mrs. Anna Mae Fairweather, Bradford, Ont.; two brothers Danny (Margaret), Sydney, and Joe, Brantford, Ont. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including his special niece Leona MacIntyre of Sydney.
He was predeceased by three brothers: Donald in infancy, and by Archie and Leo; two sisters: Mary and Anastasia and by a niece and a nephew.
The late Mr. Campbell will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. A O’ Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
