Garnet Fullerton Clarke
87, Sydney
Garnet Fullerton Clarke, Kings Road, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on December 30, 1999.
Born in Amherst, N.S., Garnet was a son of the late Charles and Edna (Long) Clarke. Garnet was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. He was a salesman for Canadian Canners for 32 years and a former member of the Kiwanis Club and the Sydney Curling Club.
Garnet is survived by his five brothers, Chester, Amherst, N.S., Gerald, St. Stephen, N.B., William, California, Peter, North Sydney and Russell, Amherst; a half-sister Ann Smith, Halifax and a half-brother Randolph Clarke, Moncton, N.B.
He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Louise (Colbourne), a sister, Grace and a brother, Kenneth.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Jan. 2, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m.. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Framboise, on Monday, Jan. 3, with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Mary (Mamie) Griffin
79, Glace Bay
Mary (Mamie) Griffin, 79 of Taigh Na Mara and formerly of New Aberdeen and 9 Morrisville St., Glace Bay, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay.
She was the daughter of the late John and Anne Langley. Mamie was employed with Glace Bay Community Hospital as a ward clerk for 30 years.
Mamie is survived by daughters Joan (Brian Penney), Glace Bay, Patricia (George MacIntyre), Ivert, Mass., Jean (Michael Kraysick), South Carolina, Doreen (Joseph Faletra), Pea Body, Mass.; sons Jackie (Lois), Donkin and Michael, Toronto; sisters Bessie (Currie), Glace Bay and Stella Harmon, Connecticut. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mamie is predeceased by her husband Redmond Timothy Griffin and daughter Betty LeMarsh.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Taigh Na Mara Bus Fund or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
Gerald Kenneth Hodder
40, North Sydney
Gerald Kenneth Hodder, 40 of North Sydney passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 in Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Kenneth and Annie (Mercer) Hodder of Leitches Creek. He worked as a fisherman for most of his life. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Katherine Power; one daughter, Angel Hodder, Little Pond; three sisters, Louise Harvey, Newfoundland, Doreen Skinner, Burgeo, Joan Hodder, Leitches Creek; five brothers, Norman, Halifax, Doug and Ed, both of North Sydney, Stanley, Kentville and Samuel, Leitches Creek. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, John.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
Alexander MacKenzie Huntley

Alexander MacKenzie Huntley, Sydney, N.S., passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 in C.B. Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Born March 17, 1914 in Birch Plain, Victoria Co., Cape Breton. He was son of Catherine and Frank Huntley of Sydney, N.S. Captain Huntley was a retired member of the C.B. Pilotage Authority for 40 years, and one of the few super tanker pilots in North America. He was a life-long member of the C.B. Shrine, Scottish Rite, and the Masonic Lodge, and a member of St. Andrews United Church.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice Huntley (Beaton); a daughter, Barbara (John) Wellman, Salt Spring Island, B.C. and a son, Sandy (Brenda) Huntley of Halifax; four grandchildren, Michael and Heather Wellman, and Emilia and Zara Huntley of Halifax. He is also survived by his sister, Kaye MacLeod and brother, Claude Huntley, both of Sydney and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alex will be greatly missed by his family and wide circle of friends.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 1 at 1 p.m. at St. Andrews United Church, Bentinck St., Sydney. The family will receive relatives and friends following the service in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the memorial fund of St. Andrews Church or the charity of choice.
M. Louise MacNeil
62, Sydney
Mary Louise (Malinowski) MacNeil, St. Peter’s Road, Sydney, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 3O, 1999 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family.
Born in Sydney, Louise was the daughter of Joseph and Molly (Marr) Malmowski. She was employed until her retirement with the Department of Justice, and had worked previously with the Department of Health. She was also the Consumer Help of Officer and had worked at the Sydney City Hospital. She was a graduate of the Empire Business College and the Cape Breton Business College.
She is survived by her two daughters, Donna (Andy Pyke) and Laurie (Shaun) MacNeil-Thorne, Sydney; her son, Michael V., Trenton, Ont.; three beloved grandchildren, Christopher, Ashley and Jillian. She is also survived by two sisters, Anna McVittie-Dayman and Patricia Cameron, both of Hamiliton. She was the niece of Kathleen, Veronica, and Frank Malinowski, Vickey Radzikowski, and James Cahill, all of Sydney.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Jan. 2, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday, Jan. 3, at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
Marie Alice Richardson
74, Port Morien
Marie Alice Richardson, 74 of Black Brook, Port Morien and formerly Kliene Heights, Halifax, died December 29, 1999 at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Halifax she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Marie (Evens) Rowe. Marie came to Cape Breton five years ago and lived with her only daughter Eileen (Mrs. Roy Shepard).
Marie is survived by sisters Helen (Leo) Oaklet, Halifax and Doris (Earl) MacLean, Halifax; brother Edwin (Lillian) Rowe, Halifax and five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husbands James Richardson and Frank Munroe and a great-granddaughter Catherine Marie.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will he held in Halifax at a later date. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, Glace Bay.
James Louis Steele
74, Sydney
James Louis Steele, The Cove Guest Home, formerly, Victoria Road, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999.
Born in Westmount, N.S., James was a son of the late George and Rosanna (Strickland) Steele. He was retired from the Sydney Engineering and Drydock.
James is survived by two daughters, Beatrice Candelora and Lois Murphy, Sydney; three sons, George, Marion Bridge, James Jr., Sydney, and Hubert, North Sydney; four sisters, Ann Willis, Coxheath, Eleanor Andrews, Big Pond, Rose Morrison, Sydney, and Zella Cameron, Sydney; five brothers, Fred, Glace Bay, Freeman, Sydney River, Jack and Cecil, Westmount and Bob, London, Ont.; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Rebecca (Ash) in 1985; three sisters, Ethel, Dorothy and Shirley and two brothers, Walter and Hubert.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Burial will take place at a later date.
