Sophie Peters
91, Annapolis Valley
Sophie Peters, 91, Annapolis Royal Nursing Home, formerly of Sydney, passed away at the Valley Regional Hospital on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Duncan and Euphemia (MacDonald) MacKay. Sophie was a member of the United Baptist Church, Sydney.
Beloved mother of Carol Littleton, Bear River, George (Marilyn) Peters, Sydney, and Joyce (Mike) Courtenay, Vancouver; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, and a daughter, Lois (MacKenzie).
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Andy Crowell officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the IWK Children’s Hospital or a charity of one’s choice.
Andrews Myles (Allie) Timmons
73, Pleasant Bay
Andrew Myles (Allie) Timmons, 73 of Pleasant Bay, Inverness Co., passed away peacefully, Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at home.
Born in Pleasant Bay, he was a son of the late James J. and Margaret (Fraser) Timmons. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Pleasant Bay.
He is survived by his wife, Katheleen (Kay) MacIntosh; three sons, Aubrey (Verna), St. John’s, Nfld., Phillip (Debbie) and Joseph (Suzanne), both of Pleasant Bay; two daughters, Nancy (Mrs. Gordon Aucoin), Cheticamp and Agnes (Mrs. Donnie Hinkley), Coxheath; one sister, Hilda Moore, New Glasgow; 12 grandchildren, Leona, Nadine, Andy, Felicia, Kelly, Jordon, Brennan, Robert, Jason, Myles, Stacey, John and five great-grandchildren, Melissa, Megan, Andrew, Tanner and Justin.
He was predeceased by his great-granddaughter, Brilyn Timmons; three brothers, Jack, Clayton and Freeman; two sisters, Margaret and Ruth.
Visitation will be held at Pleasant Bay Professional Centre after 2 p.m. Saturday. Funeral service will be held Sunday, 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s United Church, Pleasant Bay with Rev. Rose Hannah Gaskin officiating. Interment in Pleasant Bay Cemetery.

Jessie Turnbull
75, Little Pond
Jessie Turnbull, 75 of 73 Beachview Dr., Little Pond, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Maggie Jane (Inglis) MacDowell.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, and was a member of the Senior’s Daycare at Harbourview Hospital. During the Second World War she served with the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) in England.
She is survived by her daughter, Shona (Mrs. Billy Boutilier), with whom she resided in Little Pond; sisters, Mary, Jane and Charlotte, all in England; brothers, Bill in England and Johnnie in Scotland; grandchildren, Stacy, Scott and Nolan and great-grandchildren, Megan and Brayden.
She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew; brothers, Jim, Robert and Andrew and sister, Meg.
Mrs. Turnbull will have no visitation. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. with Rev. Ken MacRae officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or to the Nova Scotia Cancer Society.
Mrs. Rose Lily MacDonald
Sept. 5, 1890 - Sept. 16, 2000
Mrs. Rose Lily MacDonald, one of Canada’s oldest and Nova Scotia’s oldest resident, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the home of her daughter, Rose and son-in-law, Lui Baretta, 1101 Main St., Glace Bay, Cape Breton, surrounded by her family.
Born in Springhill, N.S., Sept. 5, 1890, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rose (Lilley) Rennie. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family of 12.
She was 11 years old when Queen Victoria died, 22 years old when the Titanic sank and she lived under 19 of Canada’s 20 prime ministers.
She moved from Springhill to Dominion at an early age. It was in Dominion that she received her education. She later attended Secretary’s College in Sydney. She worked as a secretary for the Tobin Law Firm in Glace Bay and later as a bookkeeper for the Dominion Coal Company, Pluck Me Store in Caledonia, Glace Bay.
Mrs. MacDonald married and moved to Bridgeport where she spent most of her life. She also lived for periods of time in Halifax, North River Bridge, Victoria Co. and Westmount. She returned to Bridgeport in 1995.
She was a member of Chalmers United Church for 98 years, a life member of the Women’s Missionary Society and United Church Women. She was the oldest surviving member of the Silver Cross Mothers of Canada. She was also a founding member of the Bridgeport Home and School Association.
She was an avid sports fan, both of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, knitting Newfoundland slippers and crocheting aprons for those people with whom she loved to visit.
Twice married, she was predeceased by both husbands, Hugh MacDonald and John Archie MacDonald. She was the mother of 10 children, four of whom survive her: Rose (Lui) Baretta, Bridgeport; Muriel Campbell, Bridgeport; Lydia Boutilier, Trenton, Ont., and Rev. Jackie (Sheila) MacDonald, Coxheath.
She was predeceased by daughters, Mabel Tellum, Helen MacNeil, Ruth Farrell and Elaine Arseneau; sons, Warrant Officer Hugh MacDonald and William MacDonald.
Mrs. MacDonald is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great grandchildren.
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacDonald will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held from Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Leslie A. Jay, Winsloe, P.E.I., a close family friend. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Constance (Connie) Victoria Phillips
87, New Glasgow
Constance (Connie) Victoria Phillips, 87, of Beech Street, New Glasgow, N.S., passed away at the residence of her daughter on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000.
She was born in New Waterford and was a daughter of the late Howard and Lottie Charlotte (Carmichael) Etheridge. Connie was a member of the Gospel Hall, New Glasgow.
She is survived by two daughters, Marion (Bill) Watson, New Glasgow and Jeanette (Robert) Watson, Dartmouth; a son, Doug (Marie), Coxheath; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl MacKeigan, Howie Centre.
Connie was predeceased by her husband, Donald Irving Phillips, in 1989; and a brother Frank.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Tuesday 4 p.m. with Peter Ramsey officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Kevin Devison
52, George’s River
John Kevin Devison, 52, a resident of George’s River, died after a short battle with cancer Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at his home surrounded by his family and friends.
Born in Florence, he was an adopted son of the late Jack and Mary Devison and a son of the late Mary Hillier. Kevin was employed with Joseph Cogan Cozy Living Centre in North Sydney for several years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, a former member of the Kinsmen Club of North Sydney and George’s River Community Hall Committee.
Surviving are his wife, Beverly (Anderson) Devison; a daughter, Cindy; a son, Chris, both at home; three sisters, Frances MacTaggert (Ralph), North Sydney, Claire (Richard) Chenier, Lower Sackville and Diane (Tony) Dempsey, Cornwallis N.S.; a brother, Bill (Della) Vigneault, Fletcher Lake. Also surviving are a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many very special friends.
He was predeceased by a sister, Rose, and a brother, Clyde.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery.
