Patrick Joseph Bennett
54, New Aberdeen
Pat Bennett, 54, of 45 Seventh St., New Aberdeen, Glace Bay, passed away suddenly Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Allie and Theresa (Osborne) Bennett. Pat spent many years working in Toronto, Ont. and returned to Glace Bay in 1985.
Pat leaves behind to grieve, his loving wife, Shirley (White) Bennett, Glace Bay; daughter, Sharon Sharpe, Guelph, Ont.; two granddaughters, Cassandra and Torrie Rice, Beansville, Ont.
By request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. A private service will take place at a later date.
Donations in Pat’s memory may be made to Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or to a charity of choice.
Mary MacDonald
80, South West Margaree
Mary MacDonald, 80, of South West Margaree, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at the QEII Neurology Unit, Halifax.
Born in South West Margaree, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Christine (MacLellan) Collins.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, South West Margaree and a member of the CWL.
Mary will always be remembered as a kind and gentle mother, grandmother and friend to many.
Surviving are daughters, Georgina (Peter) Gillis, Halifax, Janet (Warren) Tobey, Bedford, Agnes (Keith) MacMillan, Westmount, N.S., Alice, Calgary; sons, John, Calgary, Paul (Dorothy), Brampton, Ont., Patrick (Sharon), Mississauga, Ont.; grandchildren, Roderick, John, Sonya, Erin, Graham; sisters, Martha Burns, Jamaica Plain, Mass., Josephine Ward, Naples, Fla., Anne Richards, Mississauga, Ont., Theresa Cameron, Windsor, Ont.; brother, Angus Dan, Flushing, N.Y.
She was predeceased by her husband, John A. (Jack), a son, Daniel in infancy, sister, Janet, and brothers, George and Dougald.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Inverness Funeral Home. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Church, South West Margaree, concelebrated by Rev. John Doyle (Mary’s nephew) and Rev. Peter McLeod. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Inverness Funeral Home.
James Gregory Mason (Mase)
55, Indian Brook
Surrounded by loving friends, Greg Mason, died on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Kitchener, Ont., Greg arrived in Cape Breton one night in 1971. Next morning, when he first gazed the sparkling waters of St. Ann’s Bay, he felt a weight fall from his shoulders and said, “I’m not going back.”
Expanding on his experience as a truck driver, he drove the bookmobile and later handled circulation for Cape Breton’s Magazine for a short time.
He studied pottery at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Life on the north shore pulled him to the sea and he worked for years in many roles: lobster fisherman’s helper, engine-room oiler, ice observer, fisheries observer, shrimp fisherman. Pursuing his artistic ambitions and influenced by his work on the sea, he opened his fancy rope work business, Knotstalgia, in 1992.
Greg was predeceased by his parents, Del and Marie Schmidt.
He is survived by his son, Jonah Mason-Roy, Lake Louise, his brother, Ken (Kathy) Mason, Woodstock, his sister, Patty Holmes, Kitchener, four nephews, one niece, and a close family of friends.
Friends and neighbours will gather in an informal remembrance of Greg on the wharf at Little River Harbour at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.

Darwin Davis
Petrolia
Entered into rest suddenly at his Petrolia residence on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at the age of 61 years.
Beloved husband of Kathleen Ashe Davis of Petrolia. Dear father of Wendy Plant (Brian), Ontario, Lyn, Joe Davis (Maureen), Kim Brohart (Harvey), all of Sarnia and Brian, at home. Loving grandfather of Taylor, Danielle, Jessie, Brittany, Laura, Courtney and Caitlyn. Dear brother of Dianne Desselss (John), Lyndhurst and Donald (Karen), Greenbush. Son-in-law of Violet Burke, Cape Breton. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, including Isabel Davis, Brockville.
Predeceased by his parents, Lorne and Mary Davis and by a brother, Dwayne.
Interment took place in Brockville, Ont.
Lulu Jean March
78, Whitney Pier
Lulu Jean March, 78, St. Ann’s St., Whitney Pier, passed away suddenly, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000.
She was predeceased by her mother and father, Jessica Taylor (nee Collins) and Walter Cameron Taylor, her husband, Joseph Louis March, and her brother, Otta Winston Taylor.
Born in St. John’s, Nfld., Lulu worked as a telephone operator during the Second World War, in St. John’s, Nfld., after which she moved to Sydney, N.S., as a war bride.
Surviving are her three sons, Joseph (Dorothy), Westmount, Leonard (Denise), Pictou and Peter (Jacqueline), Coxheath; seven grandchildren, Robert, Jason, Patrick, Nicholas, Jordan, Rebecca and Evan. She is also survived by her sisters, Shirley Ferguson and Florence Parsons.
Lulu was a member of session of Trinity United Church, a valued member of many community and church organizations, including Whitney Pier Historical Society, Seniors Club, Club 55, Pier Pensioners/darts, secretary of UCW and Bethany Unit, secretary of Board of Stewards for many years, and a member of Trinity Church Choir.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier, Friday 2 p.m., with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Allen
77, Salts Springs
The death of Elizabeth Ann Allen, 77, years, of Salt Springs, Pictou County, occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at the QEII Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Iona, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Hector and Mary (Dickson) MacDonald.
Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, Havelock; sons, David (Nancy), Loch Broom, Gene (Arthene), Westville, Curtis (Linda), Edmonton, Jeff (Nancy), West River Station; daughters, Sheila Lake (Philip), Port Greville, Rosemary Sutherland (Greg), Whitehill, Tammy (Victor), Philippines; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Faye McCully, Westville, Margaret MacNeil (Murdoch), Agnes MacNeil and Jean MacNeil (Joe), Iona, and brothers, Hector MacDonald, Iona, Joe MacDonald (Minerva), Ontario, Ronald MacDonald (Rose) and John MacDonald (Marie), Washabuck.
She was predeceased by brothers, Ronald, Adam and Daniel MacDonald and a sister, Mary Campbell.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Her funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Church of the Holy Name, Westville, with Fr. Reg Currie officiating. Cremation will follow.
