John Hugh MacLeod
71, East Bay
John Hugh (Hughie) MacLeod, 71, of 4432 Highway No. 4, East Bay, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Susan (Powell) MacLeod.
Hughie spent most of his adult life in Ontario, where he worked for 35 years as an acetylene/oxygen operator with Liquid Carbonic. He retired to his native Cape Breton in 1992.
An avid sports fan, Hughie played hockey with various teams in Ontario until his retirement. He also had a great interest in history and never ceased to amaze his family and friends with his knowledge of the Second World War. Hughie was a kind and gentle man whose wit and generosity earned him a lifetime of devoted friends.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, the former Jean Delaney; son, Robert, Ontario and granddaughter, Holly; three brothers, Duncan (Mary Theresa), Sydney, Jackie (Rose), Sydney, Ronald, Ontario; and one half-brother, Donald (Rita), Sydney; four sisters, Mrs. Mary O’Brien (Frank), Sydney, Mrs. Pauline Morrison (Maynard), Sydney, Mrs. Frances O’Brien (Jack), Westmount, Mrs. Florence MacLeod, Sydney River and one half-sister, Mrs. Jessie MacEachern, Sydney, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, John, James and Fraser.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place with a memorial mass to be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating.

Terrance Henry Newton
79, Englishtown
Terrance Henry Newton, 79, of Englishtown, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000.
Born in Little Bras d’Or, he was a son of the late Angus and Nora Jane (Jessome) Newton.
Terrance was a retired ferryman for the Englishtown Ferry.
Surviving are his stepdaughter, Charlotte and stepson, Emmitt, both of North Bay, Ont.; brother, Conrad (Una), Bras d’Or; and nephews, Gerard (Annie) and Glen, Bras d’Or, and Gordon, Frenchvale.
Terrance was predeceased by his wife, Jean (Christie), stepdaughter, Wilma, sister, Evelyn, and brothers, John and Gordon.
There will be no visitation. A graveside service and burial for Terrance and his wife, Jean, will take place at the Bayview Cemetery, Englishtown, at a later date.
Jessie Brennick (nee Campbell)
71, Boston, Mass.
Mrs. Jessie C. (Campbell) Brennick, 71, died Wednesday in her home after a lengthy illness.
She was the wife of Frank Brennick Jr.
Born in Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Daniel J. and Agnes (McSween) Campbell.
She was a resident of Lynn, Mass. for the last 50 years. She was educated in St. John’s Grammar School in Nova Scotia. Mrs. Brennick worked for the City of Lynn School Department as a cafeteria worker for 11 years, until her retirement in 1992. She has also worked at the former Hunt’s Cafeteria and the Waldorf Cafe in Lynn. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Lynn and the local No. 1736 AFSCME. She enjoyed making hooked rugs and needle work.
Mrs. Brennick also leaves a sister, Florence Penney, Nova Scotia; three brothers, Stephen Campbell and Ronald Campbell, Nova Scotia and Gordon McDonald, Nova Scotia; a cousin; and nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Catherine McDonald, John and Daniel Campbell.
The funeral was held last Saturday at the Solimine, Landergan and Rhodes Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St., (Rt. 1A) Lynn, followed by a funeral mass in St. Mary’s Church, Lynn at 10 a.m.
Burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Lynn.
Jessie Brennick (nee Campbell)
Lynn, Mass.
Jessie Brennick (nee Campbell) passed away Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at home after a long illness. She was formerly from New Aberdeen.
She is survived by her husband, Frank; sister, Florence Penny; brothers, Stephen and Ronald, all of Glace Bay.
Predeceased by parents, Dan and Agnes Campbell, sister, Catherine, brothers, John and Dan.
Funeral was held at St. Mary’s Church and burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn, Mass., U.S.A.
Albert B. Dithurbide
Whitney Pier
Albert Baptiste Dithurbide, of 58 Bryant St., Whitney Pier, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, one day short of his 75th birthday.
Born in Montreal, he was the son of the late John Baptiste and Mary (DeFour) Dithurbide.
He was a member of Holy Redeemer parish, Sydney. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 128, Whitney Pier. Albert served overseas with the North Shore New Brunswick Regiment from 1942-1945. He retired from Maritime Tel and Tel after 30 years service. Albert was an avid outdoorsman who also in more recent years enjoyed gardening. He will be sadly missed by his family, particularly his loving grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Cecile Doucet; five daughters, Adriena (Dan), Ontario, Deborah (Carl), Sydney, Marjorie (Allan), Brampton, Ont., Olive (Bruce), Sydney and Terry (David), Sydney; four sons, Thomas, Vancouver, B.C., Arnold (Emily), Cheticamp, Richard, Vancouver and Darryll (Margaret), Kingston, Ont.; one sister, Mrs. Eva Howell, Sydney and six brothers, George, B.C., Jimmy, Sydney, Joey, B.C., Henry (Evelyn), Mississauga, Ont., Eddie (Carol), Sydney, Eugene (Valerie), Sydney and 14 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Andy.
The late Mr. Dithurbide will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel (main level), Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to C.B. Palliative Care or to a charity of choice.

There will be a graveside service for the late Terry and Jean Newton of Englishtown will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at Bayview Cemetery, Englishtown, Victoria County.
Arthur "Art" Bramwell
80, Bridgeport
Arthur “Art” Bramwell, 80, of 1250 Main St., Bridgeport, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Steeles Hill, Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Ellen Ann (Johnson) Bramwell.
Arthur was a Second World War veteran, serving overseas in the RCOC for five years. He was then employed by Dominion Coal Company and Devco as a miner until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #3, Glace Bay. He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church. He had a great love of life and enjoyed his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his dog, Max.
Arthur and his wife would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Oct. 11. He will be sadly missed by all, especially his family.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha (Nightingale); daughters, Ann (Alex) Deveaux, Jean MacDonald, Linda (Tony) Eagles, Beverly (John) Nolan; sons, Bill (Anna) and Wayne, all of Glace Bay; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ada (Calvin) Barrett, Ontario.
He was predeceased by a brother Billy and three grandchildren in infancy.
Visitation took place on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and will take place today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
As an expression of sympathy for Art, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Diabetes Association of Nova Scotia.
