John Angus MacInnis
85, French River, Victoria Co.
John Angus MacInnis, 85, of French River, Victoria Co., died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Indian Brook, he was a son of the late Murdock and Christine (MacLeod) MacInnis. He was a fisherman and an adherent of the Calvin Presbyterian Church, French River. He served overseas during the Second World War.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jessie Carmichael; sons, Allister (Marilyn), Breton Cove, Roy (Marilyn), French River; daughters, Evelyn (Mrs. Lee Buchanan), French River, Sally MacInnis, French River; brother, Kenneth, Houston, Texas; sister, Anna, Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Malcolm, Neil, Steven and Katie.
He was predeceased by sisters, Chris Toomey, Evelyn MacInnis, Katherine MacNeil, and Claire Spiers; brothers, William, Malcolm, Donald and Wallace.
The body is resting at Calvin Presbyterian Church with visitation held Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral 2 p.m. today (Monday) in Calvin Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Shirley Murdock officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the North Shore Fire Department, First Response Unit.

Albert Wincey
87, Rockdale, Richmond Co.
Albert Wincey, 87, of Rockdale, Richmond Co., passed away Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born Sept. 30, 1913, in Rockdale, Richmond Co., he was the son of the late Daniel and Louise (Campbell) Wincey.
He is survived by sons, Daniel (Catherine), Joseph (Evelyna), St. Peter’s, James, at home, John (Pat), Bernard (Carolyn), both of Prince Edward Island, Raymond (Dorothy), Dartmouth, Paul (Sherri), Halifax; daughters, Elizabeth (Leo) Pottie, L’Ardoise, Sophie (Georgie) Martin, St. Peter’s, Louise, at home, Irene LePage, Margaret Branch, both of Dartmouth. Also survived by one sister, Sophie Martell, River Bourgeois.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Evangeline David; a son, Francis; and a daughter, Mary Ann.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) and Tuesday from 2-9 p.m. at the L’Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L’Ardoise, with the Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Doctor W.B. Kingston Medical Centre or the Parish Cemetery Fund.

Richard C. Walker
65, Gardiner Mines
Richard C. Walker, 65, of 163 Warburton Road, Gardiner Mines, passed away Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the former Elizabeth O’Brien and the late James Walker. He was a member of St. James Church, Gardiner Mines. Richard served with the Armed Forces for three years. He was owner/operator of a garage in Dominion for 31 years where he had many friends.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, the former Bernice Angione; two precious daughters, Paula, Ont., April, Dartmouth and son, Richard, Ontario. Also surviving are brothers, Alex (Dorothy), Gardiner Mines, Greg (Marie), New Waterford and many cousins; nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by a daughter, Laurie Ann.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Walker. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. James Church, Gardiner Mines with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Roderick (Roddie) McNeil
81, Miami Beach, Fla
Roderick (Roddie) McNeil, 81, of Miami Beach, Fla. and formerly of Glace Bay, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in South Shore Hospital, Miami Beach, Fla.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Barber) McNeil of McDonald’s Lane, Glace Bay.
He was in the army for a short time. He graduated from Nova Scotia Technical School. Rod worked for Air Canada in Montreal for 25 years. He moved to Boston, where he worked for Raytheon until he moved to Miami. He worked as a chef at Miami Lakes Country Club until he retired.
All through his school days, he sang mass at St. Anne’s Church where he belonged to the St. Anne’s Choir, CYO, and was a great friend of Fr. Nash. His sense of humour will be missed by all. He had a wonderful singing voice and participated in several amateur plays at St. Anne’s Parish Hall.
He is survived by his son, Cory and wife, Diane, New Hampshire; daughters, Rodena and her husband, Terry, Boston and Heather and her husband, Tony, New Hampshire; brother, Fred McNeil and wife, Olive, London, Ont.; sisters, Elaine Hale and husband, Jesse, Tennessee, Dolonas Abnamoff and husband, Serge, Miami and Eunice O’Neill, Glace Bay; seven grandchildren and also by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Florence Matheson, brother, John and sisters, Hallie and Gertrude.
There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Rev. P. Clifford Bisson officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

George Henry Pendergast
82, Mill Creek
George Henry Pendergast, 82, of Mill Creek, passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000. He had been in poor health for a number of months.
Born in Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Walter and Catherine (Chisholm) Pendergast of Mill Creek.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 83, Florence.
George was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in Great Britain. He courted and wed his wife, Iris while on tour of duty. George was employed at the Franklyn Colliery and later at the Point Edward Naval Base. Prior to retirement he worked for many years in the woods and was an avid part-timer farmer.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Iris (Robbins) of Northampton, England; his daughters, Margaret (Jerry) MacLeod, Brenda (John) Chadwick, Maureen (Creighton) Briggs and Joyce (Brian) Fraser and his sons, George (Carol), Brian (Joanne) and David (Colleen). Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Leo, Thomas, Angus and Xavier and an infant sister.
Visitation today (Friday), 7-9 p.m. only in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Michael Lawrence Sutherland
86, Soldier's Cove
Michael Lawrence Sutherland, 86, of Soldier’s Cove, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Soldier’s Cove, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Campbell) Sutherland.
Lawrence was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 47, Grand Anse. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes (MacDonald); daughters, Martha (Peter) Sleeman, Vancouver, B.C., Elizabeth Sutherland, Revelstoke, B.C., Jessie (Raymond) White, Margaret (Austin) Martell, Laura (Hughie) Sutherland, Soldier’s Cove; sons, Leslie (Linda), Michael (Mary), Allan (Terry), all of Revelstoke, B.C., Patrick (Maureen), Sydney; 20 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by two sisters, Martha (Clifford) Parker, Clinton, Ont. and Cecilia MacCuish, St. Peter’s, N.S.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael Leo and a grandson in infancy, five brothers, Dan, Arthur, Leo, Angus, Murdock, three sisters, Mary Belle, Jessie, Margaret, two half-brothers, Donald and John and half-sister, Jessie.
Visitation will be held at the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s today (Friday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held from Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Members of Branch No. 47 Royal Canadian Legion are asked to be at the funeral home Sunday at 1:15 p.m. to attend the funeral of their comrade.
