Peacefully on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the age of 79 years.
Born in Margaree, N.S. Son of John Charles and Mathilda.
Beloved husband of Carmen (nee Lefebvre). Loving father and father-in-law of Jacqueline (Christopher), Jean Pierre (Liette) and Lynn. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Geneviéve and Christopher.
Resting at Urgel Bourgie, 63 Lorne St., St-Lambert, QC, Thursday from 7-10 p.m. and Friday 2-5 and 7-10 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Parish Church, 735 Miller St., Greenfield Park, QC, Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. Thence to Pointe Claire Field of Honour Cemetery, 703 Donegani.

John (Henry) William Burton
82, Bay St. Lawrence
John (Henry) William Burton, 82, of Bay St. Lawrence, passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bay St. Lawrence, he was the son of the late William Henry and Catherine (Young) Burton.
He was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish, St. Margaret’s Village. He was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus in that area. Throughout most of John’s life he was involved in farming, fishing, and the Dingwall Gypsum Industry.
John was a loving husband of 57 years to the former Lillian MacDonald and a loving father of three daughters, Teresa (Mrs. Michael Carey), Sooke, B.C., Bernice (Mrs. Wayne Tremblay), Brockville, Ont., and Jean (Mrs. Joey Fraser), Bay St. Lawrence; three sons, Edward (Heather), Cleveland, Steward (Cassie), Creignish and Scott (Donna), Bay St. Lawrence, and a loving grandfather to several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Tena (Mrs. Howard Chaisson), Aspy Bay, Mary Stamm, and Hannah (Mrs. George Pope), both of the U.S.A.
John was predeceased by two sisters and eight brothers.
Visitation for the late Mr. Burton will be held today (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in St. Margaret’s Parish Hall, St. Margaret’s Village. Funeral mass will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Sunday in St. Margaret’s Church, with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Reta Marvin (Burchell) Gass
92, Mahone Bay
Reta Marvin (Burchell) Gass, 92, passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Jennie (Weir) Burchell.
She worked at the Royal Bank of Canada, Whitney Pier Branch and at the main branch in Sydney for several years, then she was on the staff of CJCB Radio Station in Sydney for many years.
She is survived by three sisters, Alice Shakespeare and Blanche Boyce, both of Halifax, and Minette Buchanan, Sydney, a brother, Harold, Howie Centre, C.B.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald A. Gass, a sister, Helen Ferguson, three brothers, Albert, Charles and Maurice.
There will be no visitation or flowers by request. A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay, or a charity of choice.

Marion G. Heighton
76, Exeter, N.H.
Marion G. Heighton, 76, of Laperle Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born June 26, 1924, in Sydney, N.S. She was the daughter of the late Murray and Mary (Crane) Dingwall.
Formerly a long-time resident of Lawrence and Andover Mass., she had resided in Exeter for the last 13 years. She was the widow of James A. Heighton who died Jan. 26, 2000.
She is survived by one son James ‘Stan’ Heighton, Atlanta, Ga., two daughters, Pamela Dallaire Hartford, Salem, N.H., and Faye Cormier Castonguay, Nottingham, N.H.; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Also surviving are four sisters, Dorothy Sweeney, Bradford, Mass., Shirley Musgrave, Methuen, Mass., Claire Williams and Janet McKay, both of British Columbia; a brother, Ronald Dingwall, Nova Scotia and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, Oct. 22 from 2-4, 6-8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H. Funeral services will be held Monday 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Kingston (at a later date).
George Joseph (Butch) Moffatt
56, Lingan
George Joseph (Butch) Moffatt, 56, of Lingan, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was the youngest of three children of the late George and Annie Mae (Lively) Moffatt.
George was a long-term member of the Irish Benevolent Society, Sydney Kinsmen, New Waterford Army Navy Airforce Veterans, the Royal Canadian Guards and was a cub scout and boy scout leader in Sydney.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (MacLeod) Moffatt; daughter, Shelly (Phillip) MacKinnon, Cole Harbour; two sons, Todd (Brenda), Marion Bridge and Bradley (Carla), Ontario; extended family, Edith (Tommy), Lingan, Theresa (Troy), Whitney Pier, Debbie Young (Harold), New Victoria, Deborah Elizabeth and Carol-Lee (Kevin) Briand, both of Nanaimo, B.C., Marion (Tim) Chissom, Middleton, N.S. Also survived by one sister, Deloris (Moffatt) Burton, Sydney River; five nieces, Darlene, Anna, Noel, Tanya, Lucinda and five nephews, John, Barry, Glen, Tommy, Melvin and 17 grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Avril Walsh and one grandchild, Amanda Lynn Donovan-Layes.
Visitation for the late Mr. Moffatt will be in the McLellan Bros. Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, this evening (Friday), 7-9 p.m. Cremation will follow. Memorial mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday from the St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Burial in the Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Sydney.

John R. (Jack) Barrington
South Bar
John R. Barrington, 88, of The Cove Guest Home, formerly of South Bar, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the residence, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John R. and Mary (Sparling) Barrington, Sydney.
He was an active member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier. Jack was a charter member of the parish men’s club. He was also a member of the Sydney Pensioners Club and Club 55. Retiring from Sydney Steel Corp. in 1976, he worked for over 45 years in the Electrical Department and Blast Furnace.
Surviving are four daughters, Beverly (John) Merrick, Bedford, N.S., Lois (Lanie) MacNeil, Mississauga, Ont., Valerie (Tommy) LeBlanc, Howie Centre and Carol (John) Bell, New Orleans. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Burns, Westmount and one brother, Harry, New Waterford. Mr. Barrington is also survived by six grandchildren, Robert and Maureen MacNeil, Ontario, Glen and Greg Merrick, Bedford, Brent and Ashley LeBlanc, Howie Centre and also five great-grandchildren, Samantha and Allison Merrick, Michael, Matthew and Kevin MacNeil.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Christina Hawco; three sisters, Marion, Hilda and Elsie, two brothers, York and Frank.
The late Mr. Barrington will have visitation in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23 in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
