Nelson Turnbull
Birch Grove
Nelson Turnbull, 76. of 2383 Broughton Rd., Birch Grove, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Phillip and Emma (Richards) Turnbull.
He was a member of MacKay Memorial United Church, Birch Grove. He was a former employee with Dominion Coal Co. until 1959, then he started farming in Birch Grove. He was active in the Birch Grove Recreation Center. He was treasurer of Tower Road Dart League and a former member of the pensioners club in Glace Bay. He enjoyed bingo, playing cards (45s) and took great pleasure in helping others. He also was a former member of the “Old Fire Department” in Birch Grove.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Viola Frank; daughters, Lorraine (Mrs. George Burrows), Birch Grove, Muriel (Mrs. John Fortune), Reserve; son, David (Audrey), Birch Grove; twin brothers, Harry, Elliot Lake and Randy, Birkley, Ont.; sisters, Rose Stevens, Baltimore, U.S.A., Catherine Harrison, Georgetown, Ont.; grandchildren, Nancy Burrows, Glace Bay, Terry Fortune, Saskatchewan, Greg Fortune, Thunder Bay, Stephen and Amanda Turnbull, Birch Grove; great-grandchildren, Christopher MacKenzie, Reserve, Billy and Nicholas Burrows, Glace Bay.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Jim and Sam.
Visitation for the late Mr. Turnbull will be held today (Saturday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Family flowers only by request. Any memorials may be made to MacKay Memorial Church or to a charity of choice.

Anna MacArthur (nee MacKinnon)
Taylor, Mich.
We regret to announce the passing of our daughter and sister, the late Mrs. Joseph MacArthur (nee Anna MacKinnon) of Taylor, Mich. and formerly of New Waterford, on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000.
She is survived by her mother, Helen MacIsaac, brothers, Paul and Collie and her sister, Phemie Walzak.
Burial took place on Oct. 13 from the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home in Taylor. Mass was at St. Alfred’s Roman Catholic Church.

Wilson Patrick LeBlanc
74, Little Pond
Wilson Patrick LeBlanc, 74, of Little Pond, died on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at home.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Jerry (Tiny) and Laura (Waugh) LeBlanc.
He was a member of St. Stephen’s Church, Florence. Wilson retired in 1967 from C.N. Wharf due to illness.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Annie Mae (Morrison) LeBlanc; one daughter, Cathy (Billy Walker), Bras d’Or; four sons, David, Halifax, James (Ann Marie), Millville, Johnnie, at home, and Danny (Judy), Alder Point; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandson, Tyler Rendell; a brother, Bernard (Caroline) LeBlanc, Halifax; and a very special niece, Debbie White, who was also great help.
Predeceased by one daughter, Wanda Lee, in infancy; three brothers, Gerald, Cecil, and Bill; a sister, Sadie (Mrs. George Pero); two granddaughters, Crystal Lee and Laurie Ann Rendell; and daughter-in-law Miriam (MacRae) LeBlanc.
Visitation will be today, 7-9 p.m., and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Wednesday 10 a.m. in St. Stephen’s Church, Florence, with Fr. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Sadie S. Power
57, Louisbourg
Sadie S. Power, 57, of Havenside Road, Louisbourg, passed away suddenly Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Spaniards Bay, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Tom and Sarah (Sticklin) Sheppard.
She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church and also the church secretary. She was employed by the Town Dairy, Main Street, Louisbourg for 15 years.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Phil Power and two sons, Tony (Charlayne) and Scott (Melinda); three loving grandchildren, whom she loved and cherished dearly Marley, Savanna and Kyle.
She is also survived by two brothers, Tom (Dot) Sheppard and Nazer (Rosie) Sheppard, both of Spaniards Bay; sisters, Enith (Archie) Kearley, Bay Roberts, Nfld., Betty (Harry) Follett, Labrador City, Nfld. and Mary (Gerry) Wagerman, California.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Celina, Doris, Pearl and Annie.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday), Oct. 24, 2000 in St. Bartholomew’s Church, Louisbourg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Fr. Paul Finnely officiating. Interment will follow in St. Bartholomew’s Cemetery, Louisbourg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bartholomew’s Church Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of W.A. Chants Funeral Home, Louisbourg.
Special thanks are extended to the doctors and staff of the Emergency Room and 3rd floor ICU at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Edna Viola Newman
71, East Hants County
Edna Viola (nee Gilliam) Newman, 71, passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, in the Dartmouth General Hospital, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Emmanuel and Bertha F. Gilliam.
Viola was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James, three brothers, William, James, Arthur and a sister in infancy.
She is survived by three daughters, Marlane (Wallace) Doucette, Juanita Newman, London, Ont., Brenda (Bernard) Dawe, Hants County and a son, James (Trudy), Dartmouth. Also survived by a brother, Melvin (Edwina) Gilliam, Dartmouth; a sister, Paula (Thayne) McDow, Shubenacadie; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and long-time friend (uncle) Gerald Curran.
Viola was a resident of Woodside for 36 years and a member of Immaculate Conception parish. In 1984 they built their retirement home in East Hants County and lived there until her death. She was a member of St. Bridget’s Parish.
Viola worked for many years at Ocean View Manor in geriatrics and on the children’s ward until it was phased out. She then went to Northwood Manor for a few years until she retired.
Viola was a member of Somme Branch 31 Ladies Auxiliary since 1978. She held the offices of treasurer, assistant secretary and executive member. Viola received her meritorious service award in 1990 and her life membership in 1993. She joined the branch as a voting associate in 1986.
Viola was very active in community services. She will be loved and sadly missed by all who knew her.
Special thanks to the staff of Pod 33 and 34 of the Dartmouth General Hospital. Angela McFadden, Co-ordinator Palliative Care Services; Dr. Ken Cameron, family physician and Dr. Keizer for their support and friendship shown to our mother. Also thanks to Thelma and Gloria Burta. A very special thank you to our family and friends in our time of need.
No visitation, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Immaculate Conception Parish Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ken Robertson officiating. A light lunch to follow downstairs. Burial to take place at St. Bridget’s Parish in Shubenacadie at approximately 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care, Dartmouth General Hospital or to a charity of your choice.

Alice Bates Bishop
86, Huntington, Long Island, NY
Alice Bates Bishop, 86, of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000.
Born in Louisbourg, C.B., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Elizabeth Bates.
Loving mother of Kathy Temple, Florida and Robert Bishop, Huntington, N.Y. Cherished grandmother of Casey Bishop. Also surviving is one sister, Maude Lovett, Louisbourg, N.S.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Martyr’s Church.
Arrangements handled by M.A. Connell Funeral Home.
