H. Joyce MacLeod, 69, of Sydney, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, in the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Mary Catherine ‘Mamie’ (MacInnes) MacLeod.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by sisters-in-law, Betty MacLeod, New Brunswick, Judy MacKinnon, Cape Breton; brother-in-law, Doug Seamone, Kentville; nieces, Leslie and Alison Seamone, Kentville, Michelle Lynn, Calgary, Cathy Huddleston, Halifax; nephews, Ken MacLeod, Ontario, Archie Seamone, Kentville.
She was predeceased by sisters, Irene and Marie, brothers, Donald and John.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Port Hawkesbury, Fr. John O. Scott officiating. Burial will be in the Princeville United Church Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the Ronnie MacLeod Memorial Bursary Fund.

Pius William (Willie) Usher
Gardiner Mines, N.S. / New Brunswick
Pius William ‘Willie’ Usher, 48, of New Brunswick and formerly of Gardiner Mines and New Waterford, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, in New Brunswick, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the former Lillian Corbett and the late William Usher.
He was a former member of St. James Church, Gardiner Mines. He was formerly employed at Sydney Steel, Devco and Lingan Colliery. Willie drove for Day & Ross and other trucking companies throughout New Brunswick and was currently working for S & M Trucking out of Sydney.
He will be sadly missed by his mother; his wife, the former Selina Dewapenaere; daughters, Kelly (Jamie) Warford, Elmsdale, N.S., Kimberly (Sheldon) Howett, Summerside, P.E.I. and Tanya (Scott) Young, Ripple, N.B.; son, Bernard, at home; paternal grandfather, Joe Usher, Carefield Manor, Sydney; brothers, Joseph (Arlene), River Ryan, Michael (Joanne) and Thomas ‘Buddie’ (Paulette), both of Glace Bay; grandchildren, Tiffany and Haley Warford, Elmsdale and Ryan and Amanda Young, Ripple, N.B., and one future grandchild of Kimberly and Sheldon Howett; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by an infant brother, John, maternal grandparents, Pius and Elizabeth Corbett and paternal grandmother, Margaret Usher.
Visitation for the late Mr. Usher will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. James Church, Gardiner Mines with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Committal service for the late Angeline (MacInnis) Dunlop, daughter of the late Roderick and Florence MacInnis of George’s River, will take place Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000.
Visitation will be held at Floyd and Harriette Boutilier’s residence, 70 Russell Dr., Bras d’Or, from 12:15-2:15 p.m.
Church service will take place at St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or at 3 p.m.
Emma L. Campbell
92, West Middle River
Emma Lorena (Campbell) Campbell died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, N.S.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Melinda May (Roberts) Campbell.
Emma is survived by three daughters, Elma (Raymond) MacKenzie, Boularderie, Clara (Salvatore) Nappo, Little Britain, Ont., Lexie Chapman, West Middle River; two sons, Thomas L., Stellarton, and John A. (Linda), West Middle River; and a daughter-in-law, Elaine Campbell, Hepworth, Ont.; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Thomas A.; a son, Lorne (Sonny); three brothers, William, Alec and Joseph; two sisters, Helena, and Mary (in infancy).
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck, with the visiting hours from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday). The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, from the Middle River United Church with Lay Pastoral Minister Mrs. Linda Scherzinger officiating. Interment will be in the Middle River Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Emma’s memory may be made to the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Catherine Ann (Kay) MacLean
91, Washabuck
Catherine Ann (Kay) MacLean, 91, of Washabuck, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Cape Breton Region Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Upper Washabuck, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Sarah (MacNeil) MacDonald.
A devoted wife and mother, Kay will be fondly remembered as a good neighbour, community supporter, and source of genealogical knowledge. She had fond memories and tales to tell of her formative years working and living in the U.S.
A fluent Gaelic speaker, she remained interested in many things throughout her life, including religion, travel, politics, sports, and all things Scottish.
Kay will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her family and the staff at Alderwood.
She is survived by four sons, Rod (Joyce), Portland Ont., Bernie (Barb), Canso, Cyril (Marg), Etobicoke, Ont., Joe, Calgary, Alta.; one daughter, Carmie (Ben), Halifax; three sisters, Lex Fraser, Freeport, Me., Betty Fownes, Baddeck, Mary Catherine MacDonald, Washabuck; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Neil Stephen; brothers, Ranald, Rod, Dan F., Johnny, Angus and Alex; sisters, Rose, Theresa, Mary Agnes and Margaret.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held at Washabuck Community Centre, Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Monday), at Holy Rosary Church, Washabuck, with Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial will be held in Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Alexander Brushett
72, Whycococmagh
Alexander Brushett, 72, of Whycocomagh, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Charles and Florence (Carter) Brushett.
He was self-employed in the TV repair business for over 25 years, serving the Glace Bay and Sydney area. He served on the Board of Directors of the Glace Bay Co-Op as president for five years and was also president of the Parkinson Society of Sydney for five years.
He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Petrie; brothers, George and his wife, Pat, Glace Bay, Donald, Glace Bay; sisters, Irene Wojcik, Toronto, Lillian Clarke, Toronto, Dorothy (Mrs. Sam Cummings), Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews; very special friends, Wayne Sealey and Marilyn Matheson.
Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Wallace Road, Glace Bay, with Rev. Paul McGillivary officiating.

Alex Joe Michael
44, Waycobah
Alex Joe Michael, 44, of Waycobah Nation, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at the QElI Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Inverness, he was a son of Dorothy Jane (GooGoo) Michael and the late Wilfred Joseph Michael. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Parish. He served as a captain on the Grand Council for seven years. He was a member of the Waycobah Band Council, serving his fifth term on the board of directors of the Mawi Ta’Mk Society of Nova Scotia. He was a member of Waycobah Prayer Group. He was a sweatlodge keeper and pipe carrier. He was a lobster/snow crab fisherman. He was a member of Area 29 Lobster Fishing Association. He enjoyed bingo, hunting, recreational fishing and card games.
He is survived by his wife, the former Arlene Francis; daughter, Trina Louise, Fredericton, N.B.; son, Martin Alexander, at home; sisters, Bernadette (William) Young, Waycobah, Janie (David) Stevens, Wagmatcook, Katie, Waycobah; brothers, Andrew Joe, Waycobah, Wilfred Lester, Wagmatcook; an aunt, Theresa Henderson, Toronto. He was predeceased by a sister, Doris, and brother, Clarence.
Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the family residence, 219 Subdivision Rd. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
