Rita Cummings
Lingan
Rita Cummings, one of Lingan’s most respected citizens, passed away at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000.
A dedicated teacher for over 40 years, she was instrumental in the education of Lingan youth. For many years, she and Greta Petrie taught Grades P-8 at the Lingan School and when that school closed, taught at St. Michael’s School in River Ryan from which she retired in 1986.
A woman of strong faith and dedication to duty, Rita devoted her life to the community of Lingan. For many years, she was sacristan of her parish church, St. Joseph’s, taught religion classes, did sacramental preparations with children, trained lectors and served as Eucharistic Minister. In working to better her community, she served as secretary on numerous committees, organized many community events and was always willing to do anything she could for her beloved Lingan.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas (Elizabeth Gallant) Cummings, Lingan, N.S.
She is survived by sisters, Yvonne Campbell, Johnstown, N.S., Etheleen, Halifax, N.S.; brothers, Patrick (Sophie) Cummings, New Waterford, N.S., Gregory (Zelica) Cummings, Halifax; 12 nieces and nephews and many friends in Lingan and in the teaching profession.
She was predeceased by her sister, Sr. Ann Marie Cummings, CSM (Vivian); her brother, Raymond Cummings, New Waterford and nephew, Thomas Cummings, Howie Centre.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. MacGillivray’s Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Lingan with Fr. Donald McGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Blanchard Andrew Briand
34, Smelt Brook
Passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, as a result of a tragic boating accident.
He was an avid duck hunter and an active fisherman. He was a member of Branch No. 105, Ingonish, and a member of St. Francis of Assissi Parish, Smelt Brook.
He is survived by his mother, Jeanette (Harris); his fiancee and longtime partner, Natalie MacKinnon and his precious son, Andrew; sisters, Evelyn (Alfred Chiasson), Lantz, Sylvia (Samuel Swan), Dartmouth, Bertha (William MacIntosh), Smelt Brook, Judy (Gerard Neil), Dartmouth, Jacquline (Myles Dixon), South Harbour, Sandra (Kenneth Smith), New Minas, Loretta (Danny Hogan), Ivy (Roddie Seymour), both of Neil’s Harbour and Reta (Brian Rushton), Dartmouth; brothers, Raymond (Sheila MacKinnon), Edward (Rita MacIntosh), both of Smelt Brook.
He is also survived by aunts, Mrs. Jennie Rambeau, Smelt Brook, Mrs. Mabel Dunphy, Dartmouth, Mrs. Mary MacKinnon, Smelt Brook; uncles, Harold, Kelson, both of White Point, Douglas, Smelt Brook, James, Toronto, Chester, Winnipeg and Manie, Ottawa; six godchildren; 13 nieces and seven nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Ernest, sister, Barbara, brothers, Herman, Stewart and Raymond, aunt Alice and uncles, Henry, Harry, Bill, Jack and Wilfred.
He will always be remembered by his best friends, Wendell and Marie MacKinnon and families.
Visitation for the late Blanchard will be held Friday 9-1 p.m. at St. Francis of Assissi Church, Smelt Brook, with funeral service at 3 p.m., Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
James Lawrence 'Jimmie' MacNeil
86, Red Point
James Lawrence ‘Jimmie’ MacNeil, 86, of Red Point, Victoria County, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, in Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
Born in Red Point, he was a son of the late Joseph and Sarah (MacNeil) MacNeil.
He was a member of Sacred Mission Church, MacKinnons Harbour. He worked with the CNR, retiring 25 years ago. He was an active member of St. Columba Parish, Iona.
He is survived by his children, Rev. Hughie, Mulgrave, Joseph (Chris), Dartmouth, Gerard, Toronto; daughters, Bernadette (Harold) MacInnis, Rockland, Ont.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Laura MacNeil, sisters, Mary, Sally, Betty, Margaret, Mae and Gertie, brothers, Dan and Hughie.
The body is resting at Sacred Heart Mission Church, MacKinnons Harbour, with visiting hours 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 in St. Columba Church, Iona with Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, MacKinnons Harbour.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jimmie’s memory may be made to St. Columba building fund or to a charity of your choice.

Thomas Alexander (Tom) Hines
Kingsville
Thomas Alexander (Tom) Hines, 74, Kingsville and formerly of Princeville, Inverness County, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born in Boston, Mass. on April 10, 1926. He was the son of the late Hugh and Alfreta (Hawley) Hines.
He worked as a carpenter until an accident forced him to retired in 1981. He was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish, West Bay Road, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury.
He is survived by daughter, Freda (Rick) MacMillan, Port Hawkesbury; son, Howard (Karen) Hines, Kingsville, with whom he resided since his stroke in 1991; granddaughters, Tammy (Michael) Wohler, Toronto, Tracey (Chris) Sturmy, Port Hawkesbury, Shauna MacMillan, Windsor, Ont.; grandsons, Thomas MacMillan, Port Hawkesbury, Michael Hines, Barrie, Ont., Jonathon Hines, Kingsville; sisters, Evelyn Donavon, Ingonish, Wilena (Joseph) Doucette, West Bay, William (Bonnie) Hines, Princeville; many nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by his wives, Mary Catherine (MacMaster) Hines and Mary Ann (MacIntyre) Hines, infant daughter, Judith, son, John Hugh, sister, Norma, brothers, James, Melvin, Harold, William, Raymond, David, niece, Debbie (Hines) MacKinnon and grandniece, Brenda Hines.
The late Thomas Alexander Hines will rest at Green’s Funeral Home, 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury, Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, 2 p.m. from St. Margaret’s Church, West Bay Road with Rev. Allan MacPhie officiating. Interment in St. Margaret’s Cemetery, West Bay Road.
Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to the Strait Richmond Hospital Palliative Care Society.

Anne Florence (Gillis) Wicks
95, Whycocomagh
Anne Florence (Gillis) Wicks, 95, of Whycocomagh, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at home.
Born in Gillis Cove, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late Neil D. and Johnena (MacLean) Gillis.
She worked for many years as an interior decorator in Belmont, Mass., before retiring to Whycocomagh in 1987.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Hilda Hazard, Lexington, Mass.; stepson, Everett Wicks, Belmont, Mass.; sister, Christene Zwicker, Windsor, N.S.; brother, Iver Gillis, Coxheath; several nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.
Predeceased by her husband, Jim Wicks, stepdaughter, Vida Greenland, brothers, Archie D., John A., Rev. George N. and Duncan J.
Visitation will be held today (Friday) 2-9 p.m. in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service, 2 p.m. Saturday in the Orangedale United Church with the Rev. Aaron Billard officiating. Burial in the Gillis Cove Cemetery.
