Ann Hirsch
78, Pompano Beach
Ann Hirsch, 78, of Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Sydney, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Eli and Jeanette Evans.
Mrs. Hirsch is survived by her husband of 59 years, Harry (formerly CEO of Modern City Dairy); her children, Roselyn (Hyman) Goldberg, Lionel Hirsch (Linda) and daughter-in-law, Shula (Alfred) and by seven grandchildren.
She is also survived by sisters, Mabel, Blanche, Nora and Helen and by her brother, Roy.
Mrs. Hirsch was predeceased by her son, Alfred and granddaughter, Rachel, sisters, Pearl, Gladys and brother, Frank.
Funeral services will be held in Pompano Beach Sunday, Dec. 17.
Alexander McInnis
88, Georges River
Alexander McInnis, 88, a resident of Georges River, died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Georges River, he was the son of Frederick and Mary (MacDonald) McInnis and the adopted son of Frank and Frances Marmo.
Alex had worked in the quarry in Scotch Lake for a period of time, also in the steel plant in Sydney, and later at the Point Edward Naval Base, until his retirement.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was a member of Branch No. 19 Royal Canadian Legion and a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or and was an avid dart player.
Alex loved a good time and sharing a joke. His greatest pleasure was being surrounded by his family and spoiling his grandchildren.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 53 years the former, Jean Lee; three sons, Joseph (Debbie), New Brunswick, Robert, Cambridge, Ont., Sandy (Mary), Bras d’Or; three daughters, Jane (Terry) Dunphy, Cambridge, Ont., Sharon (Brian) Carroll, Scotch Lake and Noreen (Bill) Greer, Halifax; two sisters, Annie Kavanaugh and Mary Florence, both of Ontario; 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Tina Marie, two brothers, Joseph and Johnny, one granddaughter, Melvina.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral mass will be held Monday, 2 p.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Cremation to follow and interment of ashes in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of choice.

Gertrude "Gertie" A. MacLellan
Portage
Gertie MacLellan, 86, of Portage, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at home.
Born at Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Dan J. and Catherine (Connors) MacIsaac.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay. Gertie was also a member and past-president of the parish CWL. She was a graduate of the Empire Business College and a member of the United States Trotting Association (USTA).
Surviving are four daughters, Anne (Gerald) Aucoin, Whitehorse, Yukon, Bernadette (Randy) MacDonald, Etobicoke, Ont., Colleen (Ron) Bernard, P.E.I., Michele (Bob) Hawco, Portage; five sons, Jackie, Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, Donnie, Sydney, Joe, Glace Bay, Paul (Nancy), Lunenburg, Mike, Sarnia, Ont.; two brothers, John T. (Pauline) MacIsaac and Bernie MacIsaac, both of New Glasgow. Also surviving are 31 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and her godchild, Theresa MacNeil.
Predeceased by her husband, John A. MacLellan, in 1977; two sons, Michael and Robert; two sisters, Annie MacDonald and Mary B. MacIsaac.
The late Mrs. MacLellan will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay, Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
Murdena Alice Edge
83, Englishtown
Murdena Alice Edge, 83, of Englishtown, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000 in Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in New Harris, Victoria County and a graduate of Sydney Academy, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Belle (MacLeod) Carmichael.
She and her husband ran a general store for many years and she was very involved in the community, having served on the hospital auxiliary, the Home and School Association, as a member and elder of Oliver United Church, a life member of United Church Women, a Sunday school teacher and choir member.
She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Lillian Edge- Yelvington, Fort Lauderdale, Fa., Carol Creaser (Webster), Halifax, Dolly Dickie (David), Charlottetown; sons, Roger (Elizabeth), Halifax, G. Nelson (Janette), Englishtown; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Josephine MacKenzie (Johnnie), Baddeck and Mrs. Dolly Phillips (Carl), London, Ont. and two nephews.
Besides her husband Roger William, she was predeceased by sisters, Annabelle and Jessie; brothers John and Nelson and son-in-law Stan Yelvington.
The remains are at MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck where visitation will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Marks Presbyterian Church, Englishtown, Rev. Laurie MacCuish officiating. Burial will be in Bayview cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck or charity of choice.
Paul Alexander Fraser
76, Victoria Mines
Paul Alexander Fraser, 76, Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, formerly, Victoria Mines, passed away at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000.
Born in Lowland Cove, Inverness County, on September 14, 1924, he was a son of the late John William and Mary Jane (MacLellan) Fraser.
Paul was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. He was a former civilian employee for the Department of National Defense (Radar Base), a fisherman, and a member of St. Alphonsus Church, Victoria Mines.
Surviving are his wife, Ann (MacDougall) Fraser; daughter, Paula (Gille) Lavoie, Oromocto, New Brunswick; sons, Paul and Dwayne (Denise), both of Victoria Mines, and Marlowe (Nancy), Victoria, British Columbia; and grandchildren, Patrick, Christian, Logan, Bhreagh, Renee, Elijah, Wren, Matthew, Jessie, and Chase.
He was predeceased by his brothers, James and Hugh Dan.
There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Church at a later date. Interment in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
