Henry Ralph Parsons
77, Louisbourg
Henry Ralph Parsons, 77, of 3 Verrier Cres., Louisbourg, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Rosanna (Trimm) Parsons of Scaterie Island.
He was employed by National Sea Products, Louisbourg, for 33 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Louisbourg. He was an active member of the Fortress Seniors Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mildred Greer; son, Henry (Bernice), Catalone; two daughters, Patricia (Alan) Ward, Dartmouth, Rosella Parsons, New Boston Road; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Jim and his wife Helen, Catalone, Jack, Mira Gut, and Garfield, Glace Bay; and sister Sarah (Mrs. Gordon Miller), Glace Bay.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Fred, George, Joey and Billy, and his sister Susie.
The late Mr. Parsons will have visitation Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Louisbourg. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, from the church, Rev. Paul Finley officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care or St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Louisbourg.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.A. Chant Funeral Home, Louisbourg.
Albert James 'Al' Thorne
Lower Sackville
Albert James ‘Al’ Thorne, of Lower Sackville, formerly of Whitney Pier, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Albert and Florence (Osmond) Thorne. He was employed for 39 years with Sydney Steel. He was a former member of the Branch 128 Royal Canadian Legion, Whitney Pier, and a former member of the Bedford Legion Branch 95. He was a member of the Sackville/Beaverbank 50-plus Club, member of the Salvation Army Lower Sackville, Sackville Legion Seniors Club. His hobbies were fishing and darts.
Surviving are wife Violet ‘Vi’ Phelan; daughters, Brenda (George) Leach, Belleville, Ont., Delores (Gilbert) Malenfant, Quebec; son, James ‘Jim’ (Michelle), Lower Sackville; brothers, Art (Sylvia), Brantford, Ont., Alexander ‘Pat’ (Diane), South Hampton, Ont., George (Ina), Paisley, Ont.; sisters, Hazel Morris, Harcourt, N.B., Daisy (Mrs. Harold Plant), Brantford, Ont.; grandchildren, Mark, Lisa, and Tera Leach, Eric and Joe Malenfant, Amy and Jennifer Thorne; great-grandchildren, Brent, Jarrett, Justin, Alexander, Brittany.
He was predeceased by brothers, Gordon, Gilbert, and Edward; sister in infancy.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday in Salvation Army Citadel, Lower Sackville, Lt. Wilson Sutton officiating. Burial in Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Reception to follow in the Salvation Army Hall, Metropolitan Ave., Lower Sackville.

Dorothy Mae MacPherson
Birch Grove
Dorothy Mae MacPherson, 81, of 1065 Main St., Birch Grove, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Predeceased by her husband Clarence, a son, Wayne, sisters, Isabell and Ruth and a brother Allister.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A committal service will be held Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, with Rev. Eric Lynk officiating.
Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Glace Bay.
Mary Ellen MacNeil
83, Ottawa Brook
Mary Ellen, 83, of Ottawa Brook, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Victoria Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Bute, Montana, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Margaret (Callaghan) MacDonald.
She was a member of St. Columbia Parish, Iona. She was a loving mother and active in the community. She was a member of the Board of Trade, CYO and the Home and School Association. She was a postmistress, storekeeper and a dietitian at Morton Hospital, Taunton, Mass. and for many years she took in boarders in her home on Ottawa Brook.
Surviving are sons, Gordon, Hughie (Betty), both of Estmere, Franklin (Sadie), Ottawa Brook; daughters, Shirley (Nelson MacLean), Little Narrows, and Kim, Winnipeg; one sister, Victoria Khattar, Sydney; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Andrew, son, Jackie, one daughter, Elizabeth, sister, Flora, brothers, Johnnie ‘J.J.’ and Bobby.
Visitation Saturday, Dec. 30, at Sacred Heart Mission Church, MacKinnon Harbour, from 12-2 p.m. at which time the funeral mass will be held with Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Mission Church Cemetery, MacKinnon Harbour.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victoria Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice.

Ashton Michael Goodwin
Yarmouth
Goodwin, Ashton Michael (Collis), infant son of Larry Goodwin and Diane Collis of Yarmouth, passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at the IWK Special Care Nursery.
Surviving are grandparents, Larry and Susan Goodwin, Barry and Brenda Collis, Yarmouth; great-grandparents, Wilfred and Millie Collis, North Sydney, Theresa Stewart, Sydney Mines, Clive Goodwin Jr., Yarmouth, Charles and Barbara Atwood, Deerfield.
He was predeceased by great-grandfather, Angus Stewart, great-grandmother, Ruby Goodwin.
His memory will remain deep in our hearts to love and cherish and never forget.
A small family service will take place in Yarmouth with interment in the Riverside Cemetery in Hebren.
Donations may be made in Ashton’s memory to the IWK Special Care Nursery.
J. Alexander Hardy
63, Pictou
James Alexander Hardy, 63, Pictou, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000.
Born in North Sydney, N.S., on Oct. 13, 1937, he was a son of the late John V. and Mary Elizabeth (Styles) Hardy.
He was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by brothers Pte. Thomas Robert Hardy, who died of wounds in Italy in 1944, and Roland Clayton Hardy, who died as the result of an industrial accident in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Dianne (Moore); son, Gregor (Lynn), Pictou; daughter, Mary Beth (John Jodrey) Kuwait; two grandchildren, Sarah and Scott Hardy; several nieces and nephews.
He was educated at Thompson High School, North Sydney. Following his high school education, he served in the naval reserve. He graduated from Acadia University with bachelor of arts and bachelor of education degrees.
In the early 1960s he worked as a credit reporter for Dun and Bradstreet. In 1966, he began his teaching career at Pictou Academy and taught there until retirement in 1994. Additionally, he owned and operated several businesses in Pictou and New Glasgow, including Sounder Computer Institute, Sounder Audio Video, and Bruins Best Home Brews.
He was very community-minded. He was a founding member of the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce and was a former president of the Hector Centre Trust. He was instrumental in establishing the deCoste Entertainment Centre in Pictou.
Cremation has taken place. A private family funeral will be held in the McLaren Funeral Home Chapel, Pictou.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the SPCA.
