Bernard (Bernie) Redmond, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro, Mass.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., he was the son of the late John and Kathleen (Murphy) Redmond.
For many years he worked in Glace Bay as a plumber.
Surviving are his son, Bernie (Dolly), Taunton, Mass.; daughter, Paula (Henry) Torrey, Foxboro, Mass.; grandsons, Stephen and Michael Torrey. Also a brother, Frank (Sylvia), Glace Bay; sisters, Sally, Massachusetts, Ruth (Dan) Pezzariello), Halifax, Jackie (Fred) Hiscock, Glace Bay, Mary (Ron) Canary, Glace Bay, Ann Stuart, Massachusetts, Audrey (James) O’Neill, Glace Bay.
Bernie was predeceased by his wife, Hazel (Peterson), a brother, Peter and sister, Paula.
A private family service has taken place.
Roddie MacNeil
73, Piper's Cove
Roderick G. ‘Roddie’ MacNeil, 73, of 518 Piper’s Cove, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in the QEII Halifax Infirmary, Halifax.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Alex N. and Catherine Ann (MacKenzie) MacNeil.
He was a member of St. Barra’s Parish, Christmas Island. He retired from No. 26 Colliery, Glace Bay. He loved to play his violin.
He is survived by his wife, the former Zita MacPhee; daughter, Cathy (Shane) MacKenzie, Sydney; two brothers, Rannie, Antigonish, and Sandy, Sydney; five sisters, Mary MacAdam, Judy Morris, both of Glace Bay, Annie Theresa (Mrs. Ed Price), Hastings, Ont., Sr. Lucy, CSN, St. Paul’s River, Que., Catherine (Mrs. Danny Mazzocca), Guelph, Ont. Also many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by a son, John Roderick, sister, Genny MacIntyre, brother, Kenzie.
Visitation will be in St. Barra’s Church after 2 p.m. Friday. Funeral mass will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Barra’s Church with Rev. J.A. MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery Christmas Island.

Alexander 'Sandy' Matheson
60, Grand Prairie
Alexander (Sandy) Matheson, passed away suddenly at his home on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the age of 60 years.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Theresa (Nearing); two sons, Michael (Kathy) and Darryle (Brenda), both of Grande Prairie, and one daughter, Nancy Gigena, Edmonton. Sandy also leaves behind his grandchildren whom he loved so dearly, Ryan, Brittany, Travis, Ashley, Jonathan, Matthew and Desireé.
He will be missed by sisters, Eileen Cameron, Chuckie (Fabian) Martin, Ethel (Elmer), Melva (Brian), Sharon, all of Glace Bay, N.S., ‘Kit’ (Dave) Pastuk, New Waterford, Donna (Donny), Kitchener, Ont.; brothers, Russell (Marie) and Dan (Brenda), Port Morien, Brian, Blair, Alex (Joyce), Kitchener, Ont. Also numerous nieces and nephews.
Sandy was predeceased by his mother, Violet and father, Alexander, son, John Robert, brothers, Fred, Wayne and Darryle and one sister, Barbara.
Sandy was born in Reserve Mines, N.S. on March 16, 1940 to Violet and Alexander Matheson. He lived there most of his life until he moved to Grande Prairie with his wife, Theresa and family in 1986.
A memorial service for the late Mr. Matheson will be held Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines, Fr. Campbell officiating.
Thomas W. Bonar
69, Millville
Thomas W. Bonar, 69, a resident of 29 Patrick Dr., Millville, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Alder Point, he was a son of Mrs. Annie Bonar, Alder Point, and the late Daniel Bonar.
He was employed as a mechanic for most of his life. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or.
Besides his mother, surviving are his wife, Betty (Jessome) Bonar; one daughter, Brenda (Jamie) MacDonald, North Sydney; six sons, Tommy and Victor, at home, Brian (Darlene), Bras d’Or, Jimmie (Corrie), Boularderie, Ted, North Sydney, Francis (Cheryl), Edmonton.; special grandson, Trevor, at home; 11 other grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carl (Marie), Alder Point, David, Sydney Mines, Larry, Ontario; four sisters, Sis (Cyril) Hoeg, Linda (Derrick) Laffin, Molly (Abe) Miles, all of Alder Point, Margaret (Jimmy) Robertson, Florence. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Gail Finney; and a brother, Bud.
Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
Mary Jeanette Bonar
63, Millville
Mary Jeanette Bonar, 63, of 11 Patrick Dr., Millville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by family and friends following a lengthy illness.
Born in Millville, Jeanette was the daughter of the late Everett and Elizabeth (Marsh) Jessome.
Jeanette was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or.
Surviving are daughter, Vivian Carey; son, Joseph ‘Joey’ (Angela) Bonar, both of Millville; grandchildren, Amanda (Jason) and Ryan Bonar, Dawn and T.J. Carey. Also surviving great-grandson, Austin; three sisters, Betty (Tom) Bonar, Millville, Marie (Carl) Bonar, Alder Point, and Vivian (Michael) Jessome, Villa Drive, Bras d’Or; three brothers, Jimmy (Theresa), Millville, Joseph (Judy), Brady Drive, Bras d’Or, and Cameron (Brenda), Florence.
She was predeceased by her husband Daniel ‘Bud’, sister, Lorraine, brothers, Alexander and Austin, son-in-law, Kevin Carey.
Visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Wayne Thomas Metcalfe
54, Bridgeport
Wayne Thomas Metcalfe, 54, of 36 Station St., Bridgeport, passed away suddenly at his residence, Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Thomas and Euphemia (Woodman) Metcalfe.
He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. for 28 years.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Theresa Borgal; daughters, Yvonne, Dominion, Marilyn (Donald) Stothart, Ontario, Leanna and Beverly, both of Glace Bay; sons, David (Angela), Raymond and Greg (Tina), all of Halifax; brothers, Joseph (Donna), Springhill, Francis (Elsie), Glace Bay, Bernie, P.E.I., Bill, Glace Bay, Kevin (Agnes), Michael and John, all of Ontario; sisters, Mary (Pat), Glace Bay, Tina (Jim) and Debbie, both of Ontario. Wayne is also survived by nine grandchildren, foster brother and friend, Alfie (Dot) Hart, Glace Bay.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by foster parents, David and Leanna Hart, Glace Bay and foster sister, Betty.
Visitation for the late Mr. Metcalfe will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church with Fr. John Graham officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
