Camilla (MacNeil) Depnoli
Donellon, N.J.
Camilla (MacNeil) Depnoli of Donellon, N.J., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001.
Former resident of Dominion, she was the daughter of the late Hector J. and Levina MacNeil.
Survived by her husband, Thomas; four sons and one daughter, Sr. Isabel Rogers, Dominion.
Burial to take place at Pine Beach Cemetery, New Jersey, Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001.
Susan Catherine Nearing
83, Port Caledonia
Susan Catherine Nearing, 83, a resident of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, and formerly of Port Caledonia, passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Taigh Na Mara.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late George and Alice (Burke) Prendergast.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, Port Morien, and formerly of St. Ann’s Parish, Hamilton, Ont. She resided in Hamilton, Ont. for 45 years and the last 12 years with her sister, Alice Dearn of Port Caledonia.
Susan served in the RCAF stationed in Ontario during the Second World War. She was employed with Bridgestone/Firestone in Hamilton, Ont. until her retirement in 1972.
Susan had a great sense of humour. Her kindness and generosity toward others will always be remembered.
Susan will be sadly missed by her sister, Alice Dearn, Port Caledonia; brothers, Michael Prendergast, Port Morien, and Fred Prendergast, MacAskill’s Brook. Susan is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Nearing, brothers, John, Patrick, George, Thomas (Second World War) and Dennis Prendergast.
Visitation for the late Susan Nearing will be held today (Tuesday), 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Port Morien, with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Black Brook.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Alexander (Sandy) Matheson
75, North River
Alexander (Sandy) Matheson, 75, of North River, Victoria County, N.S., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late J.P. and Bessie Matheson.
He was a an adherent of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River. Sandy served overseas during the Second World War in Britain and North West Europe. He attended UNB, graduating in forestry.
After his retirement, Sandy was employed with the Alexander Graham Bell Museum as a commissionaire.
He is survived by his wife, the former Georgina MacLeod; one son, Earl, North River; two daughters, Ferne (Mrs. David Reeve), Oakville, Ont., and Kerry MacLean, Baddeck; two sisters, Sally Morrison and Ella MacLeod, both of Sydney; two grandchildren, Zoe and Andrew.
He was predeceased by three brothers, John A., Buddy and Earl, two sisters, Florence and Kaye.
Visitation for the late Mr. Matheson will be held Sunday, Jan. 14 from 2-9 p.m. in MacAskill Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River with Shirley Murdock officiating. A private family burial at a later date.
Wendell William McNamara
83, Lunenburg
Wendell William Patrick McNamara, 83, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Fishermans Memorial Hospital, Veterans Wing, Lunenburg, after a short illness.
A native of Sydney Mines, he was the son of J. Thomas and Ellen (Peck) McNamara and was a longtime resident of Sydney, where he was very active in community affairs until his retirement.
A veteran of the Second World War, Wendell served as Staff-Sergeant with Princess Louise Fusiliers in Italy, France, Germany, and was in the vanguard of Canadian troops that liberated Holland in 1945. After returning to civilian life, he retained his military ties as bandmaster with the Reserve Army Military Band and Sydney Mines Legion Band.
Other community affiliations included membership in the Sydney Council, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club, Lingan Golf Club, as well as being an avid and active bridge player.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (Bates) McNamara.
He is survived by sister, Mary Quirk, North Sydney; and brother Thomas, Halifax and Florida.
Remains are resting at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be today from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, celebrated by Rev. Leo Boone at St. Anthony Daniel Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Philip Francis McKeough
40, Lake Echo
Philip Francis McKeough, 40, passed away suddenly on Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born and raised in North Sydney, he was the son of Dr. Liam and Jean (Purdy) McKeough.
He spent his summers as a child in Ingonish, where he developed a lifelong passion for golf. Although Philip shot in the 80s, he often said: “It doesn’t matter the score, it’s how you look that matters,” always paying great attention to his golf attire.
He went to study at Dalhousie University in Halifax, the Berkeley School of Music, in Boston, and St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. He joined the Canada Post Corp. in 1987, and was employed there ever since. He was also a member of the parish of St. Augustine’s Church, Lake Echo. He devoted his life to his two passions, his family and golf. He also enjoyed music and politics.
He was a loving husband for 13 years to Susan (Caines) and a wonderful dad to six-year-old daughter Meaghan. She was the light of his life, and he was hers. He is also survived by his three brothers, Peter, Yellowknife, William and David, North Sydney, and two sisters, Dr. Ellen McKeough, Kingston, and Maura McKeough, North Sydney; numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and many, many friends.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday), Jan. 16 from 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m. from St. Augustine’s Church, Lake Echo, Rev. David Garrett officiating. A reception will follow at the family home.
He was a truly good man, loved by me and adored by his daughter, and I shall miss him the rest of my life.
Johnena Agnes Livingstone
96, Orangedale
Johnena Agnes Livingstone, 96, of Orangedale, Inverness County, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the Inverary Manor, Inverness.
Born in Skye Mountain, Inverness County, she was the daughter of the late John and Jessie Ann (MacDonald) Livingstone.
She was a retired school teacher having taught in the Whycocomagh and Orangedale area for many years. She was a member of the Orangedale United Church and a member of the UCW. She was lovingly cared for by the Raymond Johnstone family for 13 years.
She is survived by two nephews, Gordon MacRae, Wilber MacRae, both of Middle River; two nieces, Louise MacLeod, Dedham, Mass., Mildred MacDonald, West Newton, Mass.
Predeceased by two sisters, Annie MacRae and Alexis MacRae, brother, Alex.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday in Orangedale United Church, Rev. Aaron Billard officiating, assisted by Jim Sinclair. Burial in the Stewartdale Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Orangedale United Church or charity of one’s choice.
