Florence Elizabeth Raney
79, Point Michaud
Florence Elizabeth Raney, 79, of Point Michaud, Richmond County, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Lower L’Ardoise, she was the daughter of the late James and Gertrude (Norden) Westlake.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John; son, Gary (Donalda), Grand River; daughters, Darlene (Paul Cullen), Sheila (Robert Harding), Heather, all of Dartmouth; three granddaughters, Angela, Cheryl, Robin; two brothers, Gordon, St. Peter’s and Clarence (Lorraine), Lower L’Ardoise; two sisters, Agnes (Parker) MacPhail and Theresa Blackmore, all of Dartmouth and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Charles and Harold and sister, Nora.
Florence was a very active member in her community. She was a long-time member of the L’Ardoise Legion Branch 110 Ladies Auxiliary, the ladies social club, the Jolly Club, The Canadian Cancer Society, where she served in various executive positions. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, her African violet plants and was an avid collector of salt and pepper shakers.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today (Friday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Home, L’Ardoise. Funeral mass at 2 p.m. Sunday in Holy Guardian Angels Church with Fr. John MacIntyre officiating. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, L’Ardoise.
By request family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dr. W.B. Kingston Memorial Clinic, Canadian Cancer Society, Mount Calvary Cemetery Fund or to a charity of choice.

Ralph Savoury
84, Louisbourg
Ralph Savoury, 84, of Louisbourg, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Corbin, Fortune Bay, Nfld., he was the son of the late Issac and Sarah Jane Savoury.
Ralph fished on the bankers in Lunenburg, worked for National Sea Louisbourg. He retired in 1981 from BIO in Bedford.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eleanor (Pardy); a son, William (Annie), Main-a-Dieu; two daughters, Frances (Al) Ritcey, Eastern Passage, Helen (Richard), Ottawa; six grandchildren, Catherine Anne, Eleanor, Heather, Todd, Nicole, Derek; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, William, Ontario.
He was predeceased by son, Ralph, brother, Angus Amos, sisters, Ida, Josie and Dorothy.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 19, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Chants Funeral Home, Main Street, Louisbourg. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Louisbourg, Rev. Paul Findlay officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Bartholomew’s Cemetery Fund.
John Andrew Gould
59, Waycobah
John Andrew Gould, 59, of Waycobah, First Nation, Inverness County, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Whycocomagh, Inverness County, he was a son of the late Andrew and Mary Agnes (Phillips) Gould.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Waycobah.
Surviving are daughters, Catherine, Waycobah; stepdaughters, Rhonda Church, Dartmouth, Louise Simon, Wagmatcook; sons, Andrew John, Waycobah, Kelly, Waycobah, Kevin, Eskasoni, Daniel, Waycobah; sister, Mary Joan (Karl) Lafford, Eskasoni; brothers, Peter (Mary), Indian Brook, Joseph (Jacqueline), Afton, Roddie (Shirley), Eskasoni; Richard, Waycobah; 17 grandchildren.
Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Saturday) in the family residence, 190 Subdivision Rd. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements under the direction of The Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh.
Helen Jane Fitzgerald
74, Dingwall
Mrs. Helen Jane Fitzgerald, 74, of Dingwall, and formerly of South Harbour, Victoria Co., died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born at South Harbour, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Susan (Curtis) Petrie.
She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Dingwall, and a former member of the CWL.
She is survived by her special son, William (Janie), Ingonish; brothers, Lawrence and Rupert Petrie, both of South Harbour; grandchildren, Travis, Patricia, Wanda and Nathan; and great-grandchildren, Cowley and Brydon.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Joseph; brothers, Richard, Willie, and John Petrie; and sisters, Sadie Belle Fitzgerald, Annie MacLean and Lucy Ellsworth.
Visitation will be held today in St. Joseph Church, Dingwall, where funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Burial is under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home and will be in Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Dingwall.
As memorials, donations may be made to the North Smokey Palliative Care Society or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Helen Jane Fitzgerald
74, Dingwall
Mrs. Helen Jane Fitzgerald, of Dingwall, who died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, was also survived by a great-grandson, Conley.
John Edward MacDonald
59, Ball's Creek
John Edward MacDonald, 59, of Oakfarm Road, Balls Creek, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John Edward and Mary (Evans) MacDonald. John was a station operator at the Devco Railway.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley (Slade); daughter, Vicki-Lynn (Gary Williams) MacDonald, Edmonton; son, Glenn (Anne), Keltic Drive and granddaughters, Katelin, Kristen and Shannon.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in the chapel Wednesday, 2 p.m., with the Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Jess Matheson
79, Big Harbour
Jess Matheson, 79, of Big Harbour, Victoria County, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Alderwood Rest Home.
Born in Big Harbour, he was the son of the late Alexander and Mabel (Parsons) Matheson. He was a member of Glen Valley United Church, St. Ann’s, Victoria County.
He is survived by three brothers, Lloyd, Baddeck, Alexander, Sydney, and Alfred, Alberta. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Josephine, brothers, Murray, Robert, Donald, Murdock and Henry.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 24 at MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck at 2 p.m. with Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating. Burial in Harbourview Cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
