Henry Quinn
83, Ansonia, Conn.
Henry Quinn, 83, of 35 Ford St., Ansonia, Conn., peacefully entered rest in the presence of his family, at Bridgeport Hospital, Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001.
Devoted husband of Geraldine (Gerry) Holt.
Born in Sydney Mines, Jan. 9, 1918, he was the son of Pius and Catherine Marsh Quinn.
A resident of Devon, Conn. most of his life. He retired last year as a painter with Nitsuko Communications and was employed for many years with TIE Communications. Co-owner of Tiny Tot Nursery in Devon and Triple Q Ranch in Shelton, Conn. Henry was a lifetime member of the Tinto Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Beloved father of Greg Quinn, New York, James Quinn, Clearwater, Fla., Ginger Dishian, Shelton, B.J. Shook, Tallahassee, Fla., and Mary Jane Felix, Ansonia, with several nieces and nephews living on Cape Breton Island, N.S.
He is survived by a sister, Hazel Collier, Florida; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Burial in Riverside Cemetery following mass in Holy Rosary Church, Ansonia, Conn., Monday, Jan. 22, 2001.

Carmelita Vassallo
53, Balls Creek
Carmelita Vassallo, 53, a resident of 528 Campbell Rd., Balls Creek, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late John and Ann (Gelsinen) Vassallo.
At one time she was employed with National Sea Products in North Sydney. In recent years she helped with the children at the Balls Creek School. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale.
Surviving are five sisters, Peggy (Jackie) Morrison, Dingwall, Mary (Herman) Rudderham, Balls Creek, Ann Marina Hill (John), Sydney, Lorraine (Wilfred) Pentecost, Balls Creek, Theresa Vassallo (John), Balls Creek; seven brothers, Michael (Danena), Bay St. Lawrence, John (Audrey), Montreal, Frank (Cheryl), Balls Creek, Joseph (Carmella), Balls Creek, Bernie (Joanne), Dingwall, Robert (Caroline), Balls Creek, and Pat (Brenda), North Sydney; also numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family visitation will be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass Thursday 2 p.m. from St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale, Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Talbot House, Frenchvale.

A Mass of Celebration of the life of the late (Wish) Kelly will be held at St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen, Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the parish hall.

Elizabeth ‘Sissy’ Kressner
68, Benacadie
Elizabeth ’Sissy’ Kressner, 68, of Benacadie, passed away surrounded by family Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Barra Glenn, she was the daughter of the late Rory D. and Mary Joe (MacNeil) MacNeil.
She was a member of St. Barra’s Parish Christmas Island.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara MacDonald (James), Benacadie, Peggy (Frank) Weir, Centreville, and Joanne Kressner, Benacadie; three sons, Gerry (Kelly) MacNeil, Fort McMurray, Frank (Darlene) MacNeil, Barra Glenn, and Paul Kressner (Juanita), Washabuck; two brothers, Bernie MacNeil, Ontario, Roddie (Ann Marie) MacNeil, P.E.I., and 10 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Norman MacNeil, second husband, Clarence Kressner, an infant daughter, Frances, one sister, Sadie Fowler, brothers, Mickey, Lawrence and Roy.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Kressner, Sunday after 2 p.m. at St. Barra’s Church. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Barra Church, Christmas Island with Fr. Joe MacNeil officiating. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Autism Society.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney.

Capt. Neil Donald Wetmore Campbell
77, Grand Narrows
Captain Neil Donald Wetmore Campbell, 77, of Grand Narrows, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
Born at Grand Narrows, he was the son of the late John D. Campbell and Cassie A. MacKinnon of Grand Narrows.
He was a member of St. Barra’s Parish, Christmas Island.
Donald was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was well known as both an active community member and volunteer. He was employed with the Department of Transportation for 35 years, as captain and supervisor of ferry services of Cape Breton Island. He served as a member of the Provost Corp. 1943-46, founding member and past-president of the Grandona Branch 124 Legion, Iona, as well as several other offices. He was also a founding member of the Christmas Island Volunteer Fire Department, member of the Grand Narrows and District Board of Trade, Grand Narrows Waterfront Development Society, and Feis An Eilein, to name a few.
Donald was well known as a gifted craftsman. His spinning wheels are treasured by family members and friends across North America.
Donald received numerous awards from the legion and his community, such as The Meritorious Service Medal, volunteer awards, Fireman of the Year and Long Service Certificate with the Department of Transportation, to name a few.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Mary Eulalia Campbell; daughters, Debbie (Terry) Doucette, Liverpool, Rosalie (Allan) MacDonald, New Minas, Neila Campbell (Stanley MacLellan), Ottawa Brook, Brenda Campbell (Gerard Murphy), Lake Echo, Jean Campbell (Donald Jardine), Ingonish Beach; son, Donnie Campbell, at home; grandchildren, John Pat Doucette, Tara Doucette, Melanie MacDonald, and Lily MacLellan (My little pet). Also survived by two sisters, Sadie ‘Tootsie’ (Louis MacIntosh), and twin Sadie ‘Marie’ Campbell, Scarborough, Ont.; several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by niece Diane MacIntosh.
Visitation will be today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the St. Barra Church, Christmas Island. Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Barra Church, Fr. Joe MacNeil officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, Kidney Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.

Capt. Neil Donald Wetmore Campbell, 77, of Grand Narrows, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
Visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the St. Barra Church, Christmas Island. Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Barra Church, Fr. Joe MacNeil officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney.

Helen Fraser Halsam
90, Newcombville
Mrs. Helen Fraser Haslam, 90, of Newcombville, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Newcombville.
Born in Hamhaung, Korea, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Duncan M. and Edith (Sutherland) MacRae.
With her early education completed in Korea and Japan, she graduated from Dalhousie University, Halifax, with a Bachelor of Arts in 1933 and a Bachelor of Education in 1934. Helen taught in Nova Scotia schools for over 30 years, then retired in order to return to Korea to begin a research program on Canadian-Korean relations in the light of the missionary work of her parents and their colleagues.
A Tiger on Dragon Mountain is the result of her extensive research at home and abroad. Helen received the Canadian Centennial Medal in 1967 and the Republic of Korea National Decoration of Honour in 1987.
She is survived by her son, Gordon and daughter-in-law, Dianne, Halifax; granddaughter, Donna Lee (Mrs. Sean McLennon), Happy Valley, Goose Bay; grandson, Scott, Calgary, Alta.; and two great-granddaughters, Zoe and Margaret Helen McLennon; a brother, Allister MacRae, Peterborough, Ont.; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon H. Parker, second husband, Dr. Alexander Lee and third husband, A. James Haslam Q.C.; and a sister, Pearl Bacon.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter-St. John Anglican Church, Baddeck, N.S. with Archdeacon Reginald MacDonald officiating, assisted by Rev. Dianne Parker. Committal to follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Baddeck Forks, N.S., under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one’s choice
