Ruth Hopkins
70, Port Morien
Ruth Hopkins, 70, of 355 Long Beach Road, Port Morien, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at her residence.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Belle (MacLean) MacLeod.
Ruth was a member of St. John’s United Church, Port Morien. She was a former member of UCW, Port Morien. Ruth was a former school teacher at Gowrie School, Port Morien.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Louise (Gilbert) Ferguson, Port Morien, Edith (Brendan) Shaw, Glace Bay, and Sheila, at home; sons, Donald (Dawn), Port Morien, David (Sheila), Innisfial, Alberta, and Douglas (Ria), Birch Grove; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jenna Hopkins, Erica and Elizabeth Hopkins, Emma and Dylan Shaw, Caitlyn Hopkins and Miria Hopkins.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Bradley, son, Eric and two sisters in infancy.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Hopkins will be held Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral will held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s United Church, Port Morien. Rev. David MacLean will be officiating assisted by Rev. Margaret Collins. Interment will be in Black Brook United Cemetery. Donations in Ruth’s memory to St. John’s United Church or Canadian Cancer Society are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Pauline Marie Johnson
54, Membertou
Pauline Marie Johnson (Gould), 54, of Membertou, formerly of Afton, Antigonish County, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
Born in Afton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Martha (Mosey) Johnson.
She was a member of St. Ann’s Parish, Membertou and St. Anthony Daniel, Sydney.
Surviving are her former husband, Carl Gould, Membertou; one daughter, Martha (Mike) Fitzgerald, Membertou; two sons, Lincoln and Theodore, both of Membertou; two sisters, Edna Johnson and Mary Bridget Julian, both of Afton; two brothers, John (Marilyn) and Francis, both of Afton; four grandchildren, Jamey, Caitlyn, Taylor and Kale.
She was predeceased by an infant son, Howard Hugh in 1972, two brothers, Abraham ‘Boy’ and Richard ‘Buddey’.
The late Ms. Pauline Johnson will have visitation after 7 p.m. today (Thursday) in the family residence at 19 Micmac Cres. Funeral mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Donations may be made to St. Ann’s Church Fund, Membertou.

Memorial service for the late John D. Campbell which was to be held Tuesday, Feb. 6 has been rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.

Murdock Joseph Young
64, Belle Cote
Murdock Joseph Young, 64, of Bell Cote passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Community Health Center, Cheticamp.
Born in Lourdes, Nfld., he was the son of the late Joseph H. Young and Madeline (Chaisson) Young.
Murdock was an avid outdoor person. He came to Cape Breton working first as a pulp-cutter. Entering the fishery 33 years ago, quickly becoming one of the areas most prominent fisherman, well known for his hard work, dedication and willingness to help a friend and fellow fisherman.
He will be sadly missed by a community, his family and his many pets.
He is survived by daughter, Tracey Young, Belle Cote; two stepdaughters, Dale Reginato, Marion Bridge, and Debbie Newman, Alberta; grandchildren, Fred, Roy, Karry, Ryan and Landon; six brothers, Bernard, Lourdes, Nfld., Lawrence, Stephenville Crossing, Charlie, Augatuna, Alex, Baie Vert, Nfld., Fred, P.E.I., and Ralph, Toronto; seven sisters, Gladis, P.E.I., Rosie, P.E.I., Barb, Ship Cove, Nfld., Theresa, Lourdes, Nfld., Jenny, Halifax, Edith, West Bay, Nfld., and Madonna, Lourdes, Nfld.; a nephew, Joseph Hunt.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Ellen Young.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the Cheticamp Funeral Home. The remains will be transferred to Stephenville, Nfld. for burial.
Mary MacEachern
85, Kingsville
Mary MacEachern, 85, of Kingsville, Inverness County, died on Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Maple Brook, she was the daughter of the late Dougald and Catherine MacEachern.
She was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Parish, Glendale.
Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mary was a supportive, caring and compassionate woman who held her family’s emotional and spiritual well-being close to her heart.
Surviving are son, Alex, Dartmouth; seven daughters, Sr. Isabel, CSM, Antigonish, Kathleen (Alex) MacDonald, Kingsville, Mary (Donald) MacMaster, Schrewsburg, Mass., Jessie (Walt) Mielke, Lorraine (Gary) Kneier, Irene MacEachern (Peter Barley), and Helen, all of Calgary; 12 grandchildren, Meaghen MacEachern, Sandy, Johnny, Jeffrey (Ellen) MacDonald, Lynne (Charles) MacNeil, Paul, Susan, Don (Tina) MacMaster, David, Karl Mielke, Catherine, Mark Burley; and three great-grandchildren, Molly MacNeil, Kayleigh and Alexis MacMaster; three sisters, Margaret MacEachern, Halifax, Sarah Ann Lamey, Kingsville, Theresa Anderson, Cambridge, Mass.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, John Alex, three infant sons, Angus Bernard, Douglas Gerard, Lawrence Gerard, daughter-in-law, Carmelita MacEachern, two sisters, Jessie Lamey and Sr. Catherine CSM, two brothers, John Robert and Archie Francis.
Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 11 from 2-9 p.m. at Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Glendale, Monday, Feb. 12, 2 p.m., Rev. Alan MacPhie officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Palliative Care (Strait Richmond Hospital), Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of one’s choice.

Hector MacNeil
64, Sydney Forks
Hector Daniel MacNeil, 64, of 19 MacNeil St., Sydney Forks, passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Benacadie Glen, he was a son of the late Rod M. and Bertha (Byrne) MacNeil.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay. He was employed as a truck driver with Municipal Ready Mix for 28 years. Hector was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary MacDonald; one daughter, Cathy (Blair), Sydney Forks; two sons, Roddie (Julieanne), Sydney and Hector ‘Buddy’ (Gloria), Sydney Forks; two sisters, Theresa (Blair) Smith, Hamilton, and Matilda Hiscoe, Kentville; five brothers, Roddie (Anne), Morely Road, Jimmie, Toronto, Hughie, Glace Bay, Clarence (Linda), Glace Bay, and John R. (Isabel), East Bay; three grandchildren, Daniel, Kelsey and James.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Billie and Sonny and by a sister, Christina.
The late Mr. MacNeil will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Saturday), 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay with Rev. Francis Abbass officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, East Bay.
