Winnifred Russell, RN

We regret to announce the death of Winnifred Russell, who died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at home.
Born in River Ryan, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Catherine (Pembroke) Hawley. She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Hospital.
A frequent visitor to Cape Breton, she enjoyed skating and playing bridge.
She is survived by four children. She is also survived by sisters, Adeline MacDonald, Sydney, Anne Hussey, Ontario, Kathleen Grieve, Norton, Mass.; brothers, James, Bernard and Frankie, all of River Ryan.
She was predeceased by brothers, Fr. Pius Hawley and Patrick; and by a daughter, Kathleen.
Burial to take place in Mansfield, Mass.
Mary Starr
Howie Centre
Mary M. Starr, 78, of Howie Centre, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Mary was born in Winnipeg, Man. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. In earlier years she was very involved in many community activities in the Ottawa and Hamilton areas particularly the CWL and the local bridge clubs. She had been employed for almost 20 years at RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa and she also worked at Caplan’s Department Store in Ottawa for several years. Mary was an avid painter and artist.
She is survived by two daughters, Minka ‘Mary’ (Stephen) Hunter, Moose Jaw, Sask., and Sylvia Burton, Ottawa; son, Joseph (Margaret), Coxheath; five grandchildren, Darlene, Joey, Ernest, Sherry and Chantal; great-granddaughter Chelsea.
Predeceased by her husband Joseph in 1990, a daughter, Barbara in infancy and also by a brother.
The late Mrs. Starr will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, East Bay.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Sydney Unit of the Cancer Society.
Bernard James Worth
78, Guysborough
Bernard James Worth, 78, Guysborough, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born in Guysborough, he was a son of the late Thomas and Clara (MacAllister) Worth.
He was a retired District Supervisor for Nova Scotia Power, Guysborough. A member of St. Ann’s parish, Guysborough. A veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Grenadier Guards and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 81, Guysborough.
Surviving are daughters, Bernadette (Rod) Garret, Scarborough, Ont., Matilda ‘Tee’ (Terry) Morrow, Monastery; sons, David (Lynda), Gerald, Dannie, all of Guysborough; sister, Evelyn Bryson, Guysborough; brothers, Harold, Guysborough, A.T. ‘Bud’, Pembroke, Ont.; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Gregory, Andria, Keith, Scott, Samantha, Justin.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Barbara MacDonald, brother, Gerald.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today (Saturday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Allan MacPhie officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.

Anastasia Doyle
New Victoria
Anastasia Doyle, 91, of New Victoria, formerly of Park Street, New Waterford, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Belle Isle, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Mary (Woodfort) Wall.
Anastasia was a member of St. Agnes Parish. She was our very special mother and a friend to all who knew her. She was an avid dancer. She also loved music and being with her family.
She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Mary Corbett, Sydney, Mrs. Kay Bragg, Bras d’Or, Mrs. Jeanette (Myles) Tighe, New Victoria, Mrs. Jenny Timmons, Scotchtown; sons, Gerald (Brenda), New Victoria, John (Ban), New Waterford, and her special son Neil, New Victoria; twin sister, Ethel Hinchey, Halifax. She is also survived by 38 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Doyle; daughter, Eileen; son, James; three children in infancy; brother, Lawrence Wall; sister, Kathleen Fortune; two step-brothers; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Doyle will be at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy for Anastasia, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzhemiers Association.
Jean I. Kerr
North River Bridge
The children of Jean I. Kerr sadly announce the death of their Mom on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Middle River on Feb. 9, 1927, Jean was the daughter of Thomas H. MacDonald and Jessie E. MacDonald.
Jean and Alexander Kerr were married at North River on Sept. 3, 1952.
While raising her family, Jean also taught elementary classes in various schools throughout Victoria County. One of her greatest personal accomplishments was to successfully graduate Jess out of Grade 6, after which she retired from the profession. She enjoyed a 10-year stint as postmistress in the front porch of the family home at North River. She was a member of the Eastern Star, LOBA, UCW and CGIT. She played the piano at many dances and loved flowers and her vegetable garden.
Jean loved her deceased husband Alex, and her three children, Jess, Kathy, and Valerie. Jean also loved and enjoyed a constant stream of visitors who were nourished by an endless supply of tea biscuits. Jean and Alex offered warm hospitality, humor, and good stories as encouragement to family and friends to return again and again. There was never a dull moment.
As a four-year resident of Alderwood, the kindness and generosity Jean provided to others was returned many fold to her and her family by administration and staff alike.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Kerr.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Jess Kerr (Beverly); daughters, Valerie MacLean (Tom), of Truro, and Kathy Kerr (Donald MacKenzie); grandchildren, Shannon, Derrick and Monica Kerr, Shana, Natasha and Morgan MacLean; brother, Johnny Tommy MacDonald (Helen); and her sister, Kathleen Weir, Little Narrows.
Jean was predeceased by her sisters, Wilma Munroe and Annie Laurie.
The wake will be held today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27. The wake and funeral will be at the St. Ann’s United Church, Barachois, Rev. Laurie MacCuish officiating. Interment at a later date.
Donations to the Alderwood Rest Home or a charity of one’s choice.

Malcolm Alexander Ross
71, Jubilee, Victoria Co.
Malcolm Alexander ‘Buddy’ Ross, 71, of Jubilee, Victoria County, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at home.
Born at Cains Mountain, Victoria County, he was a son of the late Dan and Robena (MacDonald) Ross (Jubilee).
He was a retired maintenance foreman of the Little Narrows Gypsum Company. He was a member of Little Narrows Presbyterian Church. A member of Sircom Lodge, No. 66, Whycocomagh. A Past Worthy Patron of Dr. Gordon MacLeod Chapter 37, Order of Eastern Star.
He is survived by his wife, Dallas; sisters, Jessie MacLean, Anna (D.W.) Matheson, both of Little Narrows, Marion MacRae, Middle River, Sadie Beeson, Blues Mills. Also survived by stepdaughters, Anna Large and Ellen Greeley, both of Halifax; stepson, Frank Hendsbee, Halifax, number of nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Masonic service will be held 6:45 p.m. this evening. Order of Eastern Star service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, all in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Little Narrows Presbyterian Church, Rev. John Barry Forsyth officiating. Burial in the Little Narrows Cemetery at a later date.
