Malcolm John Blue
62, Valley Mills, Inverness Co.
Malcolm John Blue, 62, of Valley Mills, Inverness County, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at home.
Born in Inverness, he was the son of the late Dougald J. and Anna Belle (MacQuarrie) Blue.
He was a survey technician for the Department of Transportation, Port Hawkesbury. He was a founding member and fire chief of the Valley Mills and District Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member, past master and secretary for 15 years of Sircom Lodge No. 66, Whycocomagh. He was also a member of Philae Temple, Ancient Scottish Rite, Isle Royale Chapter of Rose Croix, Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection, Royal Arch, and served as a treasurer, Causeway Shrine Club, Dr. Gordon MacLeod Chapter 37 Order of Eastern Star. He was a member, treasurer and recently appointed Elder of Fulton Presbyterian Church, Malagawatch.
Survived by his wife, the former Margaret Ann Vatcher; son, James, Valley Mills; brothers, Howard and Ainslie, both of Valley Mills; sisters, Marina (Gabriel) MacIntyre, Glenora Road, Sadie (Joe) Fee, Whycocomagh, Eleanor (Lennie) Morrison, Bible Hill, Alexandra Blue (Sandy MacLeod), Iron Mines; two nieces, five nephews and an aunt Eleanor Eager, Cleveland.
Predeceased by an infant sister, Eleanor.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today and 2-9 p.m. Friday. Order of Eastern Star service 7 p.m. this evening. Masonic service 6:45 p.m. Friday, all in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the River Denys Presbyterian Church, Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. Burial in the Fir Grove Cemetery, River Denys, at a later date.
Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Travel Fund, Valley Mills District Volunteer Fire Department or the Fir Grove Cemetery Fund.
Annie Green
Annie Green, formerly Annie Wener, formerly of Glace Bay, N.S., passed away in her 94 year peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001.
Survived by her loving children, Gerald, Marven and Sonia; daughters-in-law, Shirley, Lil and son-in-law, Sidney; grandchildren, Rhonda, Susan, Michael and Stephen, Alissa and Norman; great-grandchildren, Alyson and Jarrett, Brandon and Amanda, Robbie, Rylee, Matreya and Forrest.
Funeral Thursday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. United Hebrew Chapel, 54 Vine St., Hamilton, Ont.

Wilma (nee MacKeen) Powell
80, Aspen
Editor of MacKeen Chiefs, 1990, died, peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Aspen, Guysborough Co., N.S., she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Bessie (Tate) MacKeen.
She edited and produced ‘MacKeen Chiefs 1990’, a genealogy of the MacKeen sept, encompassing more than five thousand names and organized the first MacKeen reunion on an international scale with more than five hundred in attendance, titled ‘Reunion 90’.
Wilma was an exceptional wife, mother, surrogate mother, sister and friend with deep religious conviction. She was a leader among her peers and will be deeply missed by all those she touched. She was employed in retail for many years, also Trenton Industries and North American Life. She was a life member of the Kirk United Church, also a choir member and Elder, a member of the United Church Women, member of Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia, the Greenfield Sports Centre and the Gunshop Membry Club.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond N. Powell, Aspen; two daughters, Karen (Mrs. Bryan Miller), Nanaimo, B.C. and Claudia (Mrs. Randy Currie), Dartmouth, N.S.; Raymond C., Halifax, N.S.; four grandchildren, Kristan and Tara Miller, Nanaimo, B.C., Christopher and Kyle Currie, Dartmouth, N.S., and brother, Isaac, Oshawa, Ont.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline Grant, Lillian MacInnis, two brothers, Ivan and Lowell.
Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. A public memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from the Kirk United Church, Aspen, with Rev. James Forbes officiating. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Aspen.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Kirk United Church, Aspen or to the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
Helen (Hashem) Woodhouse
South Weymouth, Mass.
Helen (Hashem) Woodhouse of South Weymouth, Mass., formerly of Sydney, died after a brief illness on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001.
She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, South Weymouth, Mass.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John and the late Freda Hashem.
After graduating from the St. Martha’s Hospital School of Nursing, Antigonish, she worked for many years at St. Rita Hospital nursery and for many years at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass.
She is survived by one daughter, Melanie (Jack) Jardine, Fredericton, N.B.; two sons, William (Janice), Whycocomagh, and Robert (Carol), Cambridge, Ont.; three brothers, Edward, Abe and George, all of Sydney; two sisters, Angeline Anne Sutton, Bramalea, Ont., and Adele, Montreal, Que.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Dolan and by a sister, Martha Glancey and one brother, Paul.
Burial has taken place in South Weymouth, Mass.
Memorials or donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
William Fairley Metcalfe
76, Dutch Brook
William Fairley Metcalfe, 76, of Dutch Brook passed away, at home, on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Albert and Violet (Day) Metcalfe.
William served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in the Second World War. He worked for many years with Fred Pierce Ltd., in Glace Bay. He then opened his own business, Metcalfe Metals, in North Sydney, and taught night classes in Sheet Metal. William was a corp. sergeant major and scout leader with the Salvation Army in Sydney Mines. In the 1960s, he went to work at the Cape Breton Regional Vocational School, Sydney, where he was a sheet metal instructor, until retirement. Along with his wife, William operated Metwood Small Options Home, Dutch Brook. He was also the secretary/treasurer of the Cape Breton Highlanders Association.
Surviving are his wife, Priscilla; daughter, Heather (Edgar) Almon, Sydney; grandchildren, Lisa, Brent, David, Daniel, Dale and Angel; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Metcalfe and Yvonne Carr, both of Ontario; a nephew, Willard Mombourquette, Sydney Mines and several other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Maxwell (Rocky) and a brother, Jack.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday and Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Saturday 2 p.m., with Wayne MacLeod officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Catherine Mae Morrison
76, Dutch Brook
Catherine Mae Morrison, Alexandra Street, passed away suddenly at home, Friday, Sept. 8, 2000.
Born in New Harris, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Christina (Clark) Morrison.
Catherine was an adherent of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney.
Surviving are her daughter, Mae (James) MacLean, Sydney; three sisters, Margaret Grant, Sydney Mines, Lottie Morrison, Baddeck, Maria (John) Nicholson, Englishtown; grandchildren, Shelley (Russel) Reid, Sackville and Cathy (Bill) Law, Etobicoke, Ont. and great-grandchildren, Alison Law and Brandon Reid; nephew, James Grant and nieces, Janette Edge and Rhoda MacLean.
She was predeceased by two brothers, George and Duncan.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in New Harris Cemetery.
