Annie Josephine Burton
73, Prime Brook
Josie Burton, 73, of Prime Brook, passed away suddenly at home, Sunday, March 4, 2001.
Born in South Harbour, she was the daughter of the late Stephen R. and Mary Effie Fitzgerald, South Harbour.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Church. She enjoyed knitting and often donated her work to the Guardian Angels. She also enjoyed working in her garden and she loved to bake for her family.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; daughter, Sheila (Darrell) Garnett, Elmsdale; son, David, Truro; two sisters, Julie (Raymond) Daisley, Dartmouth, and Margaret (Albert) Williams, Ingonish; three brothers, John (Sophia) and Mike, both of Dartmouth, Brian (Rose), Dutch Brook; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her son, Roland, brothers, Stanley and Allister and a sister, Mary Julia in infancy.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Burton will be held Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, second level. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 2:30 p.m. in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Leo Boone officiating.
Alex A.A. MacNeil
86, Big Pond
Alexander Anthony (Alex A.A.) MacNeil of Big Pond, passed away peacefully Monday, March 5, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
For the past three years, he had resided at 400 Kings Road, Sydney. Born in Big Pond, he was the son of late Angus Anthony and Annie (MacNeil) MacNeil of Big Pond.
Following graduation from Saint Francis Xavier University in 1939, Mr. MacNeil worked briefly in Ottawa with the federal government before coming home to Big Pond to work in the family business, ‘Angus Anthony’s Store’, as it was familiarly known throughout Cape Breton, was founded in the late 1890s by Mr. MacNeil’s paternal grandfather, Anthony MacNeil.
Mr. MacNeil will be remembered as a generous and unselfish contributor to his community. He was a faithful and devoted member of St. Mary’s Parish and a dedicated supporter of Brack’s Brook and MacDonald Consolidated schools, Big Pond Community Council and the Big Pond Fire Department. Many a youngster in Big Pond donned his first pair of skates on the backyard rink maintained for many years by Alex and Marie.
He is survived by his wife, Marie (Coady); sons, Allan (Mary), Coxheath and A.A., Big Pond; grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, Steven and Stuart. He is also survived by sisters, Sadie Rigby, Sydney, Mary Orman, Halifax, and Agnes Weatherbee, Truro.
He was predeceased by a brother, Anthony, sister, Eileen and by a brother, Neil John who died in infancy.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church, Big Pond. Interment in the parish cemetery, Big Pond.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Neil McPherson
71, St. Jacob, Illinois
Neil McPherson 71, of St. Jacob, Ill., died after a brief illness on Saturday, March 3, 2001.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Mrs. Catherine (Kate) McPherson and the late Patrick McPherson.
He attended St. Agnes School and was a member of St. Agnes Parish. As a young man he worked for the Dominion Coal Company and the Sydney Steel Plant. Later, he moved to Toronto and for several years he worked for Canada Packers. The company then transferred him to St. Louis, Ill.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol, two sons, David, Hyland, Ill., and Steven, Washington, D.C., one daughter, Judy, Carlyle, Ill. He is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth (Charles) McIntyre, New Waterford, Mrs. Theresa (Joe) MacNeil, Mira, Lena Lamontague, Dartmouth, Sr. Marie McPherson, Halifax, and Audrey (Milton) Samms, Dartmouth; two brothers, William, Calgary, Alta., and Patrick Burlington, Ont. He is also loving remembered by his nine grandchildren. Besides his father, he was predeceased by his brothers, Stephen, Michael and Richard and a sister, Catherine.
Burial will take place at a later in St. Jacob.
Ernest Michael MacNeil
49, Lower Sackville
Ernest Michael MacNeil, 49, of Lower Sackville, passed away Monday, March 5, 2001, at home, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of Joseph MacNeil and the late Isabelle (Maillet) MacNeil.
He was a 30-year member of the Canadian Armed Forces and was also a serving member of the Calais Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Diane MacNeil; sons, Cory, at home; Michael and wife Jennifer, Calgary; brothers, Bob MacNeil, Kingston, Steve MacNeil, St. Catharines, Anthony, Ontario; sisters, Nancy Peinsznski, Dutch Brook, Joanne Peckham, New Waterford; grandmother, Melvina Maillet, Cheticamp; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday with a legion service 7 p.m., in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., where funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Padre Guy D’Amours officiating. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Calais Branch Legion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Palliative Care Unit, QEII.
Sarah Jane Abraham
72, River Ryan
Sarah Jane Abraham, 72, of 3 David St., River Ryan, N.S., left this world peacefully on Monday, March 5, 2001, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, surrounded by her family after a short, but courageous battle with cancer.
Sarah was born in New Waterford on April 15, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Archie and Mae (Leadbeater) Hutchison.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law and friend. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Sarah was employed at Pete’s Dairy, New Waterford, for many years. She enjoyed bingo with her friends. She loved harness racing and never missed a night her horse was racing. She especially enjoyed her yearly shopping trips to Maine with her daughter. She will be remembered most for her great sense of humour.
She is survived by Alex, her loving husband of 53 years; one daughter, Lila (Rod), Halifax; three sons, Joey (Judy), George (Cindy) and Michael (Rose), all of New Waterford; five grandchildren, Gina, Leanne, David, Nicholas and Kevin; two great-grandchildren, Devin and David, all who were the light of her life. She is also survived by two brothers, Fred and Tommy, both of New Waterford; and two sisters, Margaret Wolfe, New Waterford, and Catherine MacDonald (Junior), Windsor, Ont.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, John and Archie and one sister, Annie Jordan.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were made under the direction of the V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A memorial service will be held today (Thursday), March 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. in Calvin United Church, Hudson Street, New Waterford, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will take place in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
Margaret Anne (Nan) MacDonald
Big Beach
Margaret Anne (Nan) MacDonald, a former resident of Big Beach, passed away in her 95th year on Saturday, March 3, 2001 in Toronto, Ont.
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacDonald will be held today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island. The funeral mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Barra’s Church with Rev. J.A. MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
