Daniel J. (Barney) MacNeil
73, Rosenburn, Inverness Co.
Donald J. (Barney) MacNeil, 73, of Roseburn, Inverness County, passed away Monday, March 26, 2001, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Joseph E. and Amelia (Berry) MacNeil.
He worked in the blooming mill of Sydney Steel for 18 years. He retired from Sterling Drug, Aurora, Ont. He served in the Royal Canadian Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Waycobah.
Surviving are his wife, the former Marie MacPhee; daughters, Donna (Ken) Eley, Toronto, Helen (Don) Altseimer, Keswick, Ont.; sons, David (Jackie), Kevin (Dawn), both of Barrie, Ont.; sisters, Marie MacNeil, Sadie Thompson, Catherine MacNeil, Peg Donaldson, Annie (Ed) Landry, Joan (Vince) Cunningham, all of Sydney; brothers, Pat (Agnes), Robert (Marguerite), both of Sydney; grandchildren, Robert, Danielle, Brittni, Justin, Shaun, Tyler, Selina, Allison, all of Ontario.
He was predeceased by brothers, Johnny, Alex, David, Edward; sister, Cecilia.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the family residence, 418 Southside Roseburn Rd. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29 in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Cremation to follow.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations to Palliative Care, Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital or charity of choice.

John William Walker
83, Forchu
John William Walker, 83, of Forchu, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was born in Big Ridge, the son of the late John and Florence (Stainer) Walker.
He was a retired fisherman and carpenter. He was a member of Forchu United Church, the Forchu Framboise Volunteer Fire Department and the Forchu dart league. He was past-president of Forchu Development.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12 in Sydney.
Survived by his wife, the former Dolena (Burns); one daughter, Debbie (Angus) Gillis, Marion Bridge; one son, Wayne, New Glasgow; three grand children, Robert, Jamie and Vincent; one great-grandchild, Austin.
He was predeceased by stepfather, Stanford Rafuse and stepbrothers, Melvin Rafuse and Wellington Rafuse.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
Funeral service will be held at Forchu United Church, Friday at 2 p.m. Burial at Little Hill Cemetery, Forchu, Rev. Lewis Carewe officiating.
Norman Edward Rudderham
71, Edwardsville
Norman Edward Rudderham, 71, of Edwardsville, died peacefully Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Charles and Dorothy Rudderham of Westmount.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Rose (MacIntosh), Edwardsville; two sons, Chipman Edward, Sydney River, and Victor Clifford, Sydney. He is also survived by one brother, Cecil, residing in Ontario, and two sisters, Viola, Sydney, and Florence, Ontario.
He was predeceased by one brother, Victor.
There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Prayers will be held in the funeral home chapel for family and friends Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m.

Dorothy Emma Landry
69, River Bourgeois
Dorothy Emma Landry, 69, of River Bourgeois, died peacefully, Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, surrounded by her family.
Born at River Bourgeois, she was a daughter of the late Bertha (Lawrence) and Michael Sampson.
She is survived by her husband, Alcantra; children, Peter (Doris), Kempt Road, Emma (Garry), Michael (Debbie), Donna, Gerarda (Eddie), all of River Bourgeois, Buzzie (Annie), Louisdale; eight grandchildren, Laurie, Kim, Alana, Peter, Matthew, Rebecca, Sarah and Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Kerstin and Donaven; special nieces, Bonnie and Pauline; nephew, Jimmie.
She was predeceased by a brother, Leonard in infancy.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 30 in the River Bourgeois Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31 in St. John the Baptist Church with Fr. Sandy MacNeil officiating. Cremation to follow. Burial at a later date.

Neil Nicholson Smith
41, Frenchvale
Neil N. Smith, age 41, of Frenchvale, formerly of Westmount, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of Mrs. Margaret (Phillips) Smith of Westmount and the late James C. Smith.
Neil was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces since 1983, serving with the Air Force in CFB Sydney (Radar Base) in the 1980s and later with the Canadian Army in Petawawa and Gagetown. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who loved to fish, hunt, swim and canoe. Neil’s priority was his role as father and husband. His valiant struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) over the past three years tested and proved Neil’s strength of character.
Surviving are his wife, the former Wendy Hill; two daughters, Megan and Arianna, both at home; one sister, Tanya (Mrs. Wayne Good), Keswick, Ont.; three brothers, Jim (Patsy), Sydney, Alex, England, and Gordon, Brown Hill, Ont.; several nieces and nephews and by his father and mother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. James and Georgie Hill of Point Edward.
He was predeceased by a sister, Katherine in infancy.
The late Mr. Smith will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Friday, March 30, 2001 from 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Rev. Mike Thorburn officiating. Donations may be made to the ALS Society (Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis), Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or charity of choice.
Paul Joseph Bungay
48, Mill Creek
Paul Joseph Bungay, 48 of Mill Creek, passed away at the QEII Halifax Infirmary Hospital, Thursday, March 29, 2001, surrounded by friends and loved ones.
Born in Alder Point, he was the son of the late William and Yvonne (Laffin) Bungay.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Labour Union for the past several years, and prior to that, served with the Canadian Coast Guard and was a merchant marine with the Seafarers International Union on the Great Lakes.
Paul is survived by his loving companion, Mary-Jo Keeping; daughter, Charlene-Florence and cherished grandson, Aaron; sisters, Rose (Patrick) Dalton, Grand Cache, Alta., Yvette (Carlos) Gonzalas, Yellowknife, N.W.T.; brothers, Leo (Heather) Bungay, Alder Point, William (Ann) Bungay, Pictou, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Family visitation will be held in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sunday with funeral Services scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating.
Flowers by family members only, with memorial donations being made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
